It will be hard to translate if you're not a French Canadian. I'm from Québec (Yeah... sorry ) and those lyrics are depressive on my opinion.

Amazing album. That reflect our culture, our history. I think only people from Québec can really reach an other level with Gris. That's my personnal case.

I agree. My girlfriend's father is French-Canadian and passed on a lot of information about the Québécois, even raising her to learn both French and English. A big reason she identifies with bands like Gris, Sombres Forêts, and Forteresse is how they present their material. Generally their lyrical content is pretty depressive, but most Québécois black metal bands like these focus on the historical aspects of the province, covering a wide range of rather depressing topics. They also do a great job of incorporating cultural elements into their music.

An amazing album, for different reason there other two albums are amazing.

I'm not entirely sure why they are categorized as Depressive, from the few songs i have translated the lyrics aren't really even depressive.

Honnestly, I think you can't google translate those lyrics. It will be hard to translate if you're not a French Canadian. I'm from Québec (Yeah... sorry ) and those lyrics are depressive on my opinion.

Yeah your right it doesn't translate well i realize now, what i did translate didn't seem terribly suicidal or anything..but they probably were't translated properly anyway.
Is there any site with the lyrics translated for any of there albums ??

No, I don't even try to find that kind of site to translate my mother tongue.

Have you try on with the band directly? I asked them a question about a possible release of À L'Âme Enflammée, L'Äme Constellée... in vinyl. They answer me quickly. Probably they won't be too busy on a tour with Iron Maiden Oh yes, they will release a limited edition of À L'Âme Enflammée, L'Äme Constellée... in vinyl pretty soon.

Cheers!

Their lyrics aren't about suicide or typical themes you may find in depressive black metal, it's about the death of their culture. It's about the loss of hope, the loss of their memories, and the loss of what makes them Québecois, which is just as depressive as suicide,if not more so. That's my interpretation anyways.

Yeah i know what you mean, like not an mental illness depressed or whiny teenage angst, but sorrow of a defeated culture... Kind of like the maoris, aborigines, indians and the rest

Not in the purest sense, no. Early Shining, Silencer, early Hypothermia, Lyrinx, and Thy Light are good examples of depressive black metal. Gris tend to be lumped into that scene just because of the atmosphere they create.

Woa fuck Troy, BAM! Nice! I am thinking this is kinda like Sombre Forets and even Les Discrets?

Sombre Forets, yes - Les Discrets not so much. Some elements of post-metal appear (mostly in the ambient breaks, textural guitars, and the way they build momentum) but they don't have any affiliation with the shoegaze scene. Totalselfhatred and Nyktalgia are two bands that play a similarly depressive form of atmospheric black metal (although neither one reaches the intricate technicality or ambitious songwriting of Gris).

Fuck, I hate it when you get all big worded and technical - my head is a bout to explode - so what do you recommend that's kinda the same "style" as Gris?

I'll keep it simple - while I haven't heard of any bands that play the exact style of Gris, you should start with Nyktalgia and Totalselfhatred as mentioned, maybe work in some Miserere Luminis (a collab of Sombres Forets and Gris members), Defaillance, Austere, Krohm, Csejthe, maybe some Lifelover (although this rec is more so due to atmosphere than overall sound) and, if you like what you hear, from there you can delve into the depths of the depressive black metal genre. I'm assuming you won't like the raw stuff as much so no point suggesting the likes of Abyssic Hate or Trist, but those others are a good place to start.

Fair enough. Yeah haven't heard their first one either. But have heard its more straightforward and more in the true depressive BM style. I didnt get that vibe with this one really. More so with the lyrics perhaps.

Then Agalloch is not your type I think...this album has very strong Agalloch guitars' approach, overall presentation is softer than the previous one.

Yeah, but MA is full of people that like this depressive crap.

As everyone says, this band is snoresville. I'm surprised people could tolerate forty minutes of this kind of music. Over an hour and ten minutes of it must be pure and utter torture.

The problem of MA's rating system is averagely based on very few reviewers' opinions. If one reviewer's rating is extremely high or low then the score will be greatly affected...not really accurate.
