Shovel parting earth and an unnerving scream signal an imminently approaching force. A force to be reckoned with it is one which mouths to you your own doubts and brings you to question your own sanity. The listener will find themselves in a position from which they cannot move, fastened tight within a straight-jacket of exceptionally resilient musical compositions.

Hopefully something continuing in the direction of After. Looking forward to it, regardless

Ihsahn is too creative to stop.
larrynmn - 11.02.2012 at 01:21
Ihsahn definitely does need to continue.. although i heard the same that there would only be three albums and then he would continue other avenues of making music aside from his solo project.

Rating: 7 After is a favourite but I wasn't so fond of the other two albums. He still seems to have Munkeby's sax on retainer but I'll have to reserve judgment until I see it. Also, shouldn't some more details have emerged by now? Not even a title, weird...

I was sent a steam by the person who handles PR for Ihsahn (Earsplit PR, if you're curious). I can't wait to get a high quality (read: lossless) version of this. Buying the record as soon as preorders are available.

Odd that the album cover is of Nietzsche, upside down.
He was quite insane by that point in his life, too.
Interesting choice all the same.
Neroese - 18.06.2012 at 15:36
  Not bad.
Unhealer - 18.06.2012 at 15:53
Rating: 10 Even better than After, that means it gets an eleven from me.

The guitar work is insane. I don't know how many tracks had input from Loomis, but Ihsahn threw a couple of godly leads in this one; he improved a lot.
And all the tracks are really diverse, he experimented a lot more in this record, damn perfect.
Dentura - 19.06.2012 at 01:41
Rating: 7 Definitely not bad, it may just need a few more spins....

Days later I have given this album more spins, and what do you know, this album is amazing. This is even better than After, and so many more awesome subtleties that really add up to something breathtaking. One of the best albums of the year!!!
jesterhead57 - 19.06.2012 at 04:12
Rating: 10 Whats with all the great releases this year? The sax is used much more fittingly, much more enjoyable on this album imo.
Troy Killjoy - 19.06.2012 at 04:19
I suppose the question is whether or not I bother with this. Chances are it's just going to be more of the same sax-heavy progressive "black metal" mess as before.
jesterhead57 - 19.06.2012 at 04:30
Rating: 10 Sax is only on two tracks (and the bonus track). Last album too much sax for me. I was hoping for no sax on this but I don't mind the sax at all now that I've heard it.

You'll certainly find some more on this release, but not the same

I don't see anything wrong, but I think it's a step up from After. The riffs and song writing in general are just better . I will have to listen to After as well to confirm some of my thoughts
oblong - 19.06.2012 at 08:07
Looking forward to hearing this, like many others I enjoyed 'After' (and his previous releases).
Bad English - 19.06.2012 at 14:26
Just tryd. no this is not old Emperor, this album is good and bad, I like where he sings clean vox and use more metal sound not prog sound into songs, I mean instruments who play mor eprog metal less metal, he shood do it other way around than its be killer albums, + clean vox parts was awesome m still its not old good Emperor
BaneConall - 19.06.2012 at 16:29
I'm still on the fence about this one. I'll give it another few days before I make up my mind.
Troy Killjoy - 19.06.2012 at 18:33
Yet another sloppy mixture of prog and melodic black metal, albeit with more of an extreme feel and less saxophone abuse. This guy just stands on the edge of being able to deliver so much more but never knows when to cut down on the bullshit. A high 6 or low 7 is in order here in my opinion - moments of brilliance held back by a convoluted execution. He needs to condense his ideas and focus on playing out one riff at a time before throwing the kitchen sink at it.
oblong - 20.06.2012 at 06:08
  Gave the leak a few listens and again with the stream this morning;
I also think that it is a step down from 'After', a much weaker sound overall. Clean vocals especially doesn't do much for me, I preferred them when they were more subtle - the atmosphere is also hard to define, again doesn't contain as much impact.
3dd - 20.06.2012 at 15:58
Rating: 7 NEED MOAR SAX!!!

Seriously, it's a very very interesting album. With the same elements of before, but with something different, more atmospheric perhaps. I will give it more listens but till now "Something out there" is my favorite.

But the album It's average to good overall. Overly progressive in some tracks.

Also, what the hell he tried to do in "The Grave? This song just sucks, WTF. (Reminded LuLu)

Rating: 9 Great album, can't stop listening to it. Introspection, Catharsis, Something Out There and The Grave are probably the best tracks for me. Seeing others say its sloppy or 'too' progressive.. can't understand that myself, this seems like Ihsahn knows exactly where he's going with it, I was hooked from the first listen.

Night Sight - 22.06.2012 at 20:08
I cant's feel the album content ,it is variety of everything and it hasnt clear sound but i surely can say it is one step back form after not as great as after ,the atmosphere ishas not the feeling of black metal except in few songs like the paranoid

Not bad.

So "Not Bad" gets a 10 from you? Does bad get a 9? I'm sorry if i sound a little rude, but either your opinion on the album changed drastically from when you wrote that comment to when you last updated your rating for the album, or you have no idea how to rate an album.

Does Ihriel sing on this or not? She's listed on the band page (guest musician) but not on the album page. If not, probably won't bother with it, as I wasn't too impressed with AngL.

I'm pretty sure I remember hearing female vocals somewhere, so I'm assuming it's her. Very scarce if I recall correctly - admittedly I was more focused on trying to navigate through this mess and wasn't too focused on whether or not he brought the wife around to help.

She sings in "Departure". Just a few seconds, so don't bother Anyway, this one is nothing like Angl.

Thanks. I like Peccatum and Star Of Ash, so I was hoping for a duet or something. I don't reckon Ihsahn's voice suits the music he does solo (based on AngL). He need to either do something different with his voice, or go back to black metal. The proggy stuff and the rasp just don't gel for me.
Warman - 26.06.2012 at 15:22
Rating: 5 No, I did not like this. "The Adversary" was a great album with some brilliant moments, the same goes for the two releases after that one, but not really as good. "Eremita" is... nothing new in my opinion. I feel that Ihsahn can do much more than release the same album again. This time I'm pretty much fed up with it. Live up to your potential, damn it! I'm dissapointed even though my expectations weren't that high to begin with.

Yep, two great bands. I didn't dig too deep in Adversary and Angl yet to compare, but I think he is doing great with prog his latest releases. When I first heard After, I also complained about his vocals but I got used to them later.

I'm curious as to what you would cite as "sloppy" and "bullshit." I've listened to it everyday basically since I bought it and I thought all the mixture of genres felt natural and were well executed. Maybe some of the songs on this album compared to the last two are less complex, but as a whole album, it really feels varied yet cohesive. All of it just makes sense and I like how he managed to use the Sax differently on this album. Alot of people rag on the saxophone but I really like it. I hope you're not one of those fans of his who just hopes hes going to go back to playing Emperor type songs because that's just not going to happen. He's relatively young, and I feel like all his solo albums speak very differently for themselves and this album was a great follow up to After. I mean, who knows, the next album could end up being the heaviest thing he has ever written--he's pretty unpredictable.

I've listened to it twice now and honestly I just can't give it any serious dedication because I keep picking apart pieces that I find to be out of place. I've found all of his solo work to be like that - to me it sounds out of focus, as if it contains a wide variety of interesting elements that unfortunately don't gel together either because the elements he's chosen don't work cohesively for me or simply because he fails to execute the combining process efficiently. That being said, I'm hardly a fan of Emperor (Anthems and the split with Enslaved were both good in my opinion) so this isn't one of those biased opinions from someone upset at the change in direction from a symphonic black metal band to an extreme progressive metal project.
