Circus Maximus is a progressive metal band formed by the Haugen brothers, who appear on guitar (Mats) and Drums (Trus), Mats' old school buddy Glen Moller on bass, Michael and the mastermind Espen Storo on keyboards. They're from Norway, who has given us great progressive bands like Ark and Pagan's Mind, for example.

"Glory of the Empire" is good and "Sin" is awesome, but the rest are kinda lame. Good album, tho.

why do you rate it an 8 if it's lame? 8 means "very good"; 7 means "good".

I love this album, one of the best progressive metal albums out there.

OK, lame ain't the right word. Lemme say "not as memorable as Sin and GOTE". Still, nothing wrong with them, very enjoyable album. But seeing that this bugs you, I'll lower it to 7.

It does not bug me, but seeing a high rating (because 8 is a high one) associated with a negative connotation like "lame" does not make much sense.

Maybe they were just paying homage to a superior band.

Their best album, in my opinion. I would probably pin it down to the different keyboardist. I much prefer the style of keyboards in this album than in the more recent two. Glory of the Empire is their best song by a mile. The atmosphere, the grandiose strings (ok, keyboard strings), the imperious guitar work; It just helps paint an awesome picture, that fit the lyrics perfectly. 'Tis fantastic.

Circus Maximus copied the sound of Dream Theater, so DT copied the unicycle guy from CM

Can someone recommend me more bands that sound like this? Besides Dream Theater and Symphony X, of course.

Anubis Gate, Pagan's Mind, Andromeda, Darkwater, Seventh Wonder, Mind's Eye and Beyond Twilight would be good places to start... you might also like A.C.T, although they are eclectic rock rather than metal.

First gig was Manowar (loincloths 'n' all), Bristol Colston Hall in March 1983, on the 'Hail to England' tour. Tickets were £3.75, 300 in the audience, Mercyful Fate never showed, but my hearing still got seriously trashed..

The ones which I think have a similar style from the recommended ones above are Pagan's Mind, Andromeda, Seventh Wonder the most and Anubis Gate & Darkwater to a lesser extent. I would also add Angra especially the more recent albums, Adagio, Anthriel, Dreamscape, Shadow Gallery, Teramaze, Threshold, Vanden Plas, Voyager, Myrath, some Ayreon albums like "The Source", + Conception a little

This album is 17 years old, damn it, time flies!
Must listen album for anyone into progressive metal and I dare say not only.
Tight performance, an excellent vocalist, great song-writing.
