Another few years have passed and the once so mighty Children Of Bodom give it another try. People out there might have heard the rumours already so here is the essential question: Are they back? Back from their downhill path starting with Are You Dead Yet? If you want an answer to that, get yourself the album and find it out by yourself, for it's truly a quite personal question. But let's have a look beyond conservatives and fanboy rockers and get some insight to the subject.

The singles released for this album, "Transference" and "Halo Of Blood", set off a storm of anticipation and excitement around this album due to the fact that these songs sounded reminiscent of the Children Of Bodom's classical and often most cherished early albums. But now that the album is out and the dust is settled, does Halo Of Blood really live up to the hype?

in fact, this stuff remind me to hate crew deathroll a little

Rating: 9 Definitely COB's best effort since Hate Crew! Good to hear the influences of the first 3 albums. Great comeback!

This reminds me a lot of Hatecrew Death Roll, which for me is fantastic because i simply love that album! And there's a lot of black metal "ish" from their older albuns, if i could say... That title track is awesome...

Rating: 5 The singles released for this album, Transference and Halo of Blood, set off a storm of anticipation and excitement around the album due to the fact that these songs sounded reminiscent of the band's classical and often most cherished albums. But now that the album is out did the rest of the songs deliver?

Not quite, would be my answer. Unfortunately the two previously mentioned singles are the best songs on the album. Waste of Skin and the Days are Numbered are also arguably decent songs and while other songs often do have a good dose of that classical bodom past, they also have a (un)healthy serving of the sloppy melodeath-mess CoB has become.

The album pretty much sounds like a cover-bands attempt to do a medley of all CoB's albums mixed into one. A Hatebreeder-esque intro here, an AYDY riff there, topped off with a Bloodrunk breakdown. These sort-of Frankenstein combinations plague the album, so while a song might start off sounding promising, 20 seconds later and its a piece of crap.

Furthermore even the best songs of the album are still a pale shadow of what came before, I mean Transference & Halo of Blood sound decent but really they still sound like they could be B-Tracks from the Something Wild days. Same goes for Days are Numbered except sounding like a Hatebreeder rip-off and even Waste of Skin has a weak and Slayer-derivative chorus.

So, while yes, this is arguably the best album since HCDR, being the 5th best CoB album is not a very tough feat. And imo I would even put the lackluster AYDY above this.

Unfortunately the two previously mentioned singles are the best songs on the album.

I was gonna give it a go because of the rating it now has compared to the previous albums, but since you mentioned the singles were the "best" songs on the album (I thought both songs were terrible), I might reconsider and just not bother at all.

Nah, I just don't feel like wasting my time with Bodom anymore. I'll probably check it out eventually, but reading the comments (both positive and negative) don't exactly get me excited, since it seems the two singles were more or less a good indicator of the rest of the album.
EDIT: You know what, fuck it, I'll check it out right now and be done with it

I actually think it sounds quite like HCDR so even if it's not the Bodom I love it's definitely in the right direction

I don't like it. Sure, I admit it's a step up from their previous release, but it's still garbage to me. It has some genuinely enjoyable moments, though they are few.

Well you gave it a shot at least . I think if this would have been released after follow the reaper I wouldn't like it but nowadays you have to enjoy every drop of relative good music that Bodom releases

Rating: 7 They''ve done a good album again. Better than their lasts 3 albums, worst than their 3 first, but at leaset as good as HCDR. They've made a step forward by making a step backwards. If their next album is even more old school than this one i would say they've returned again.

When I first heard the first song of the album, I smiled from ear to ear but I miss the old apassionating sound of SW, HB and FTR. Anyway this is a good surprise for me.
Windrider - 09.06.2013 at 13:19
Rating: 9 This is actually great! The logical follow-up to HCDR somehow... and their best since then.
They still manage to first release one of the (slightly) weaker songs (Transference) but anyway, Bodom are back!
rdhelli@gmail.com - 09.06.2013 at 20:16
Rating: 9 I gave it a 9, because I think they finally found the right direction to fill in the gap they made in their fans' heart with their last few years. That is an effort that should be respected. After giving it several spins I can also say they did not copied the old years using the same recipe and making repetitive, dull shit, but instead they used the same recipe to make fresh and very good stuff. Feel the difference.

RhaegarTargaryen - 21.06.2013 at 17:42

Wow! Just listened to the title track, I certainly wasn't expecting this! The Norwegian BM-inspired riffs from their early works are back and this song is just kick-ass. I had completely ignored their last album but this one gives me hope CoB can still play decent extreme metal.

I disagree, the production is a little funky, and the songs get boring after a bit, but the rawness and energy is back. Drumming has improved greatly. I wouldn't listen to it again, but it wasn't bad.

I didn't get anything energetic from this album. Very plodding, uninteresting songs, terrible dry-throat vocals which were far too high in the mix, flat production. Yeah, no.

Obviously not in the same league as Hatebreeder, FtR or HCDR, but it definitely shits over anything they did over the last couple of years, and Something Wild.

Agreed. This has happened with every album of theirs since Blooddrunk; it's not as shitty as the predecessor, or it's a different type of shitty, so people start getting a little too excited and hail it as a return to form.

Personally, I only listened to a couple tracks from this, there wasn't enough to pull me in further. To me it just sounds like the same unlistenable garbage they've been putting out for the past 8 years.

Every album of theirs since Are You Dead Yet? ... Relentless Reckless Forever at least i find it decent, but this Halo of Blood is much better than Are You Dead Yet? for example, or even Something Wild .

Seeing your qualifications of the albums, my impression is that Children is the typical band that you like only one or a couple of records... sure past 8 years for you? you are putting a six on Hatebreeder , or four on Something Wild , but Hatebreeder? this is a fucking masterpiece of Metal =)

Six isn't a terrible rating. It's "Average". So you'll see that I recognized their recording history was on an incline up until a point. That, and I started listening to them shortly before AYDY was released (possibly around the same time), so there was still a sense of anticipation and let down for me.

Rating: 5 COB starts to be an old band and doesn't seems to change something. The first album was titled "Something Wild" and the last one should be "Something Old" ; it is so HateBoring, Following The same way since 1997 getting worst and worst ; The HateCrew is Dead ans they seems to be some MilkDrinkers.
musicalkaratekid - 05.12.2013 at 14:24
Rating: 8 I think I speak for the majority of COB fans when I say that this album shows the band returning to their roots. Whilst none of the songs here still manage to match the quality on COB's first three albums, I found every one to be very enjoyable. In particular I loved how well orchestrated the keyboards were with the rhythm section, making songs such as the title track, 'Transference' and 'Bodom blue moon' all the more consistent and excellent. A couple of songs (namely 'The days are numbered' and 'Damage beyond repair') disappinted me a little, but not enough to make this whole album any worse.

Rating: 8 This has been sitting on the shelf for a while now. After Blooddrunk and Relentless.... I wasn't expecting this too be any good. I agree with most that it sounds more like a genuine successor to Hatecrew.... Probably a 7.5 rather than an 8 but a decent album and much improved on the last 2.
mikeprado30 - 19.03.2014 at 06:49
Rating: 9 That is a AMAZING album! The title-track BLEW MY BRAIN!!! It surely would be perfect if weren't by those ballad-like songs that killed the flow of the album (even when I think they are not bad, but somehow they don't fit).
