I created this poll because I'm a multinstrumentalist and i would like to know about other musicians and their preferances . Do you play any instruments ?

Vocals are an instrument only if hands are tools. It's at best misleading to refer to hands as tools, and it's misleading to refer to vocals as an instrument. Instrumentals are songs without vocals, no? Similarly, someone who does something with their bare hands is one who does the task without tools. And I don't understand the relevance of Kurt Cobain here.

He believed in vocals as just another instrument, admitting that a majority of his lyrics were completely nonsensical and only written to fit the music.

I just play bass guitar but I'm also interested in learning how to play drums.

You can create tones/sounds/noises with your throat & vocal chord etc. | instruments create tones/sounds/noises
You cannot weld with your bare hands (but you can pick berries) | with hands you can make a lot of different type of things | hands can be replaced, and then it's clearly a tool

It is possible to create music using only your hands BTW.

Anyways, I voted yes, I play guitar. I'm ok, more at straight chugging shred abuse than lead stuff.

I play bass okay, and shitty drums.

Vocalists are musicians, but vocals are not an instrument.

I've played lead guitar in both of my previous bands, but would also like to torment a few ill - fated listeners with some vocal attemps.

Some definitions for a musical instrument

A device for playing or producing music
any of various devices or contrivances that can be used to produce musical tones or sounds

I would consider Vocals as an instrument.
It needs skill to use, not everyone can do it. It can sound different for each person, depending on style of playing. Most of these relate to every instrument.
I'm not a vocalist, I play bass guitar, but I still think that vocals can be considered an instrument.

Oh I also play didge and jews harp, shitty drums, a bit of djembe.

I forgot about my acoustic guitar, and I get a new ibanez on saturday.

For metal I play bass and have done vocals. I play guitar also, but I've never played guitar for a band...although I've used guitar to write songs. I absolutely cannot play drums.

Electric guitar and drums are my main instruments.
Currently my focus is on electric guitar but I just can't live without drums.

When you are a practiced singer/vocalist,
the instrument is "YOU" and yes you can sing melodies, or scream on pitch. (musical pitch I mean)
So, IMO, vocal or vocals is/are not the instrument, you are the instrument, you hit the high and low notes you want
and the vocal cords are the tools.
When you are sick or tired you just lose your voice 'till you recover (by sleeping, eating or taking medicines)....
After all, It doesn't matter anyway! enjoy the music.

I find it funny that bass isn't even a choise.

Of course I play drums, guitar is for pussies I have done some singing too, had to sing in choir in school and I can at least sing in tune.

To sum up my previous posts.

acoustic guitar, electric guitar, some vocals and BAD drums.

would love to learn how to play the saxophone.

It's not a problem, it's just ironic seing how bass seems to be very underrated and seen as phony guitar by many

I play guitar and piano, and have done some background vocals. I'd also like to learn some drums, or at least give it a try.

To sum up the content of this thread:
1.Vocals AREN'T an instrument but vocalists ARE musicians.
2.I just forgot to put bass as an option. I didn't want to imply anything about bassists.
3.Currently, i play the bass more than the guitar or the drums.

I play piano, bass and acoustic guitar my main instrument is bass and have an LTD 415 5-string i have also recieved drums lessons but i quit after a half year or so

I play bass and some rhythm guitar. My main bass is a Dean Edge 09 with a mahogany natural satin finish.
Oh, and I'll be able to somewhat pull off something that resembles Steve "Zetro" Souza's vocals when I actually want to do vocals in a thrash band.
