I can't think of many alternative metal bands (at least good ones for that matter), but out of the ones provided, definitely Tool! Lateralus is a mesmerizing masterpiece from front to back, I never get bored of it for a second.

Alice In Chains IS alternative metal. They play grunge which is alternative metal, so besides bad english you also have bad metal knowledge

Choosing between the top 3 bands is hell - AIC were one of the key bands getting me into music, and probably my favourite band from those early days; FNM gradually became a favourite during 2011 as I fell more and more in love with Angel Dust; and Lateralus has got me strongly into Tool. I guess it'd probably come down to AIC and FNM, and maybe just about AIC, but all 3 are bands I have a lot of time for.

Somehow I misread System Of A Down as Korn (don't ask me why though, one consists of three words and the other of four letters) and early Deftones and Korn could be compared more or less.
But indeed none of those bands mentioned have anything in common except for them being alternative metal.

I don't quite get what you mean, but alternative metal is an umbrella term that incorporates other genres, like some grunge, industrial, nu-metal etc. not necessarily just bands that have a unique style.

You were arguing over whether AIC were alternative or not. You then said that they have different styles and I added in that alternative metal is about having unique styles in the first place. But I think you've given a much clearer idea as to what alternative metal is. I'm used to thinking it's just groups that are trying to be ''unique'' and forgot about all the genre influences.
