Just checking out the various MS Top 1000 album vcharts and came across the one for Death Metal.

http://metalstorm.net/bands/albums_top.php?album_style=Death

It's quite bizarre in that there is not much Death Metal in it. especially the top 20 which is nearly all "melodic" DM and very often without much Death Metal in it (e.g. Death's Symbolic or Diaawxriob).

Meanwhile Cannibal Corpse, Possessed or even Death's Scream Bloody Gore and Leprosy don't even appear?!?

I take it MSers don't really like "pure" Death Metal that much?!? Or is the list function simply quite useless?

The ratings are an interesting snap shot nonetheless.

In fact they're the closest I've seen to a reasonable quantitative snapshot of the metal listening public.

Most people would be bored by this but I find it interesting.

there are but a handful of people whose tastes I trust and whose endorsement means much of anything.

frankly, the biggest issue is looking at ratings in the first place. i completely disregard them. there are but a handful of people whose tastes I trust and whose endorsement means much of anything.

The ratings are useful if you want to know which album of a band to try first. That's what I usually do, anyway.

You're better off without the shooting lessons as they only teach you how to shoot inaccurately.

Nah they were told to miss. Was part of Tarkin's plan

I don't think getting annihilated by Ewoks was though.

Never underestimate the power of sheer numbers.

You're also still very new here, so you haven't come to learn much of our more tenured members' tastes. And it's not always about finding Stormtroopers who have the exact same taste as you, but learning who typically listens to stuff in a similar enough vein as you, or whom a lot of others regard as having good taste in their preferred genres.

In time you'll start figuring out who has similar enough taste as you in the different genres you like or have some interest in. But in general it is still good practice to pass final judgment on some things with your own ears.

Yep! When you've been here long enough, you kinda figure who's reccos to go by, as they have a similar taste in a certain genre. I'd give it a listen based on someone's recommendation or review, but I'd like it only if I like it

i don' t think anyone would take my recs seriously but don't worry, i won't make a thread about it.
It's actually good to know which people would never have the same tastes as you, saves looking into new bands they have recommended or opening there youtube posts and so on

^I actually always check bands you post on the "last album you listened to". Atmospheric bm ones at least... But it seems you are in a quest for stoner metal lately, so I'm kinda not following more =P

And deadone, It's funny that you don't trust your fellow stormtroopers (yeah, I liked the term) for recommendations, still you trust on metal labels.
For me following recs of people I know the taste is far less than a shot in the dark than going for a release of a label that just someday released something I like.

Well, but as you said, almost no one with tastes like you here... So it must be because of it.

sorry about that, i'm not even in to that stoner/doom subgenre, it's just i a'm stuck on the couch with a broken foot at the moment all day everyday so was just exploring stuff just for pure education really. Any music i really like makes me want to get up and do stuff..and i just can't

Oh. Sorry for hear that. I also listen to music for curiosity too, and I do that quite a lot. Somehow stoner/sludge never appealed that much, the riffs and isntrumental can be good, specially on sludge bands, but the vocals kinda kill it for me. They often sound like a progressive rock singer tried to do a growl but couldn't succeed.

Nah, never even trusted buddies who were into similar genres and bands, let alone random people on the net.

Y'know like your buddy who likes Thrash and old school Death just like you and then keeps trying to convince you Green Carnation is something you'd like.

Well then you're just fucked.

I'm sure eventually you'll get to a point where you're learning other's tastes around here, and you may not "trust" them, but you might start checking things out just because they endorsed it.

No one is ever going to like the exact same bands as you but there is a taste spectrum where you realise people like similar things. I'll more easily click on a thread of a band I don't recognise if X person was the last to comment, as I know that person has similar tastes, whereas I would probably ignore Y person who tends to like stuff that I don't.
