Full disclosure: At The Gates is one of my favourite bands. And when I say that, I don't mean in my top 50. They are in the running for #1. It's been almost 20 years since the release of Slaughter Of The Soul, an album considered by many (myself included) to be one of the finest melodic death metal recordings ever. At last, they are back with a new album - At War With Reality.

I've seen some stupid shit in my time but someone claiming At the Gates spawned deathcore has to be near the top of that list.

Modern metalcore does come close though!

There are some shared elements, no doubt. But deathcore and the kind of melodic death metal At the Gates are known for don't exactly go hand-in-hand.

I am still rubbing my eyes in disbelief (half an hour after reading it) from having read what that guy said about ATG having spawned deathcore/metalcore.
The deathcore claim is totally ludicrous and about metalcore... proper metalcore was already around in the 80s in the form of Cro Mags after their debut album, Agnostic Front on an album such as Cause For Alarm. It did however influence what people call metalcore nowadays, where the core part of the name should be dropped, to be honest, since it has nothing to do with hardcore whatsoever.

New Genre coming baby

The new genre is called Hedgehog Coitus Pop. It is basically what In Flames is aiming for with Siren Charms, but with the sounds of mating echidnae as vocals. ...oh wait.

I will listen to it just for nostalgia, but I think it will be disappointing, better not to have high expectations.

And they done goofed

Although they have had some suspect album artwork in the past so there's still a chance the music will be good.

Heh, "The Head of the Hydra," "Death and the Labyrinth," "Heroes and Tombs"? And here I thought MDM wasn't proper at my local Pathfinder Society...

And don't mistake that for ridicule. I like my geeky music plenty.

I'm not sure what's more flat: the songs, the production or the vocals. I think Heroes And Tombs and The Conspiracy Of The Blind are the only things I enjoyed on this

At least it´s not like the new in flames album, Tompa´s vocals are a byt tired but overall good

Kind of an odd thing to say seeing as you gave the new In Flames 10 / 10 I agree though, this is better than the new In Flames, just not very interesting to me.

Slaughter of the Soul part II.
Song structures very much like SotS.
The production is too high and too clean. Shame.

Perhaps structurally, but it's flat out average compared to that album.

I don't go in for all this commentary on albums prior to their release. I don't know how you young punks even get it before release, but that's your thing these days. Whatever floats your boat. The gotta have it now generation. Anyway, on the strength of the two offically released songs, I've got high expectations of a pretty decent album (when it comes out). I can wait. Anticipation is sometimes even better than the actual experience. Here's hoping that the anticipation and the experience are on a par with each other this time.
