It's obvious in this web page we are brought toghether by one music genre, but what about the rest?
I wanted to know which are your other favorite musical genres out side metal (if you have any), and if you may want to comment why.
I didn't create a poll so it could be more open, besides I wouldn't be able to fill all the possible genres, so...
Ok, so, just feel free to discuss this and tell what you think

For a while most of the music I liked was either pure energy or very melancholic. Lately though, I've been enjoying a lot of more atmospheric "interesting" music (basically meaning that I like stuff with harmony and rythmic ideas that haven't been overused) But I think the energy of metal is such a positive factor in music, so I really like it when bands take the concept of metal and fuse it with other genres of music like jazz and classical. Which is why I've been appreciating a lot of jazz and some classical lately. I remember listening to jazz and hating it, but now its been becoming one of my favorite genres of music. Its really good to listen to as background music as well as pure listening. Its not really the complexity that makes me like it, but the pure weirdness and really good organization of this weirdness.

If its not Metal than it gonna be straight in HARDCORE PUNK. I really like the intensity of punk cut nerds vociferating excessively, puking anger and injuring others from their plague eyes and making every song a fucking hit is what I actually enjoy if I am not in mood to listen Metal.

It is probably post-rock. Or any other variation of rock. Triphop also chills me out.

And I've been listening more non-metal stuff than metal.

I think over the years that punk rock is my second choice.
I can listen to other genres as well but I always get back at The Casualties, GBH, Anti-Flag, The Exploited...

For nostalgic terms, I like a bit-almost-nothing of Akon, 50 cent and Ne-Yo. Also some other rap things that played a lot during 2004~2008 here in brazil.

1. Progressive Rock- Genesis, Yes, Pink Floyd, ELP, the works
2. Alternative/Indie Rock - Especially The Cure and The Smiths (I guess I could possibly include Depeche Mode since they incorporated elements of alt rock in their later work)
3. Classical - Igor Stravinsky is a brilliant composer

Hardcore/post-hardcore, post-rock, shoegaze, some forms of electronica.

I also listen to some underground hip-hop but not nearly enough to call it favourite.

Depends on my mood. Actually went to a live Jazz performance on friday and it blew my mind. Unbelievable.

Here's my range:
Progressive rock, from Coheed and The Dear Hunter to the 70's greats like Yes and Genesis.
20th century classical, almost always Ligeti, Reich, Bartok or Stravinsky.
I think 'indie rock' is a misnomer, but bands like Death Cab, The Decemberists, Iron and Wine and Modest Mouse are great.
Florence and the Machine is outstanding, sort of pop, sort of epic.

Yeah, that's the meat of it. I'm up for just about anything live aside from cover bands. But that Jazz show blew my mind, I'm gonna have to find more of those.

In recent news: I absolutely love Slint (math rock/post rock) and Codeine (slowcore) from the early 90s, and I finally decided to look into their type of gloomy, noisy and angular indie rock styles. Turns out Yo La Tengo, Duster, Seam and Polvo are all fucking amazing. I don't know how I've missed them before. Galaxie 500 also deserves more attention, I've known them for ages but never really gave their discography a proper listen.

Not too much. Slint were pretty much the first to do this thing (in 1991), and they're closer to math-rock than post-rock. They influenced those bands for sure. But the bands you mentioned are big and bombastic, Slint are skeletal are raw. Not very close to any of their contemporaries either, but Codeine, Trans Am, maybe Tortoise might be good comparisons.

For me it's progressive rock music. Much of my non-metal CD collection is comprised of progressive rock music such as Genesis, Yes, King Crimson, Rush, ELP, and Rush.

So what you're saying is that you really like Rush?

Rock, whether it be classic, prog or post. I love a lot of it. However I have a pretty large (in comparison) indie collection. So I guess it's that.

1) Punk Rock. I listen to just as much punk as I do metal, i found both of these genres at the same time thanks to the original Tony Hawks Pro Skater games. When it comes to punk I enjoy the raw energy, the down to earth (sometimes) lyrical themes, and the whole sense of community there is within fans; well at least in Asheville NC the punk scene works that way.
2) The Blues and Jazz. I wont go too far into detail here, but i really love this stuff! As a music tech. major in college i developed a love for this after taking a class on its history. Without these genres there would be no metal these days so it is incredibly important, but beyond then that they are genres filled with real musicians who simply love playing music; something that is rare these days.
3) Progressive Rock/Jam bands. In Asheville NC there is a huge community of musicians and over 100 bars in a small radius so you can imagine the diversity there is. Often musicians from all spectrum's of the world of genres get together and jam, this results in music that has no genre but is just awesome.

Rock or Celtic instrumental... I totally just love the feel of Celtic instrumentals, now that makes me wonder if there is any 'Celtic Metal' type stuff.

Hi Tulkas,

I have always usually been a Pop/R&B fan, but recently I have grown to like Country music more and more. However I am not stuck on one genre, but like to explore many different kinds of genres, i have a very hard time picking a favorite because one week it might be metal, and rock, and another might be more moods like pop or it might be jazz, or country, i like so many kinds, and picking a favorite is impossible for me. Therefore I made my own mix of songs that I usually prefer to play through Music Forte. So it depends on my mood which song I will play at that moment to reduce my stress level.

I listen to every type of music on the face of the earth.

So it's really hard to decide what my favourite outside of metal/rock is. Maybe electronica? Jazz? Blues?

I have no idea.
