that was really censured by the staff or it was self-sensure???

after Jeff began to change the "fucks" for "bunnies" and "to fuck" for "to bunnify" I passed many weeks away from MS

Talking about later Ulver, Perdition City is a simply AMAZING album

I censured it there are some under 16 people reading it

All Ulver albums are awesome but Kveldssanger is my favorite. Altough it is not newer album atmosphere is awesoeme and Ostenfor Sol Og Vestenfor Maan and Ulvsblakk are somewhat unique, great sound. I rally love it. Altough I like Black Metal Ulver too

if you liked "Kveldssanger", on the "Quick Fix of Melancholy" EP they took the track 'Nattleite' and reworked as an electronic piece, re-titled 'Eitttlane.'

I finally got around to hearing "Bergtatt" and I can see why many consider it Ulver's best album. Some of the best black/folk I've ever heard. The acoustic passages are beautifully haunting and the mix of clean and raspy vocals are executed very well. The black/folk riffs are very good as well. Loved the atmosphere of the album too. The album is great piece of melodic and atmospheric metal woven into an absolute masterpiece.

I just listened to the new Ulver song posted on their myspace. It's called "Vigil" and it was quite an interesting listen. As always, it has a minimalistic, yet cold, haunting quality that I've come to expect out of Ulver. I especially enjoyed the piano work. I look forward to hearing more.

sounds great. a good harbinger of the album to come. I am excited to hear it is to be more low key, dark, and tragic. - i preferred Perdition City, their flurry of "silence" EP's and soundtracks to "Blood Inside" for those reasons.

Sounds interesting. I am thinking about ordering something from their industrial/avant garde works, any recommendations? I know I could read reviews too but I thought why not hear if somebody has something to say about it.

Well, starting from the beginning, I couldn't whole heartedly recommend 'Themes...' because I have never taken the time to give it a thorough listen through. However, I can suggest to you the rest. 'Perdition City' is really a favorite of mine from them. It had a really cold cut atmosphere that makes it hard to swallow but it is a fantastic album. Their two next albums 'Lyckantropen Themes' and 'Svidd Neger,' which were made as soundtracks, are very minimalistic pieces of music with mostly piano work, they are definitely a great listen, especially while trying to sleep. However, 'Blood Inside' is definitely their most colorful album, and possibly their best to date. It will be hard to swallow if you're not used to having your head pounded in by one hundred layer songs.

I would definitely recommend 'Perdition City' then 'Blood Inside.' Not to mention it wouldn't hurt to check out any of their EPs too.

I have listened to the new album quite some time now and it's really solid stuff. Again, Ulver has created something that is quite different from their previous works. The music is very serene and flows very slowly. I'd say it's the darkest album since "Kveldssanger" (in contrast, I see "Nattens Madrigal" among the most joyous albums btw ). I certainly don't think it's their best, though. Still, there are two tracks that are unbelievably brilliant - "All the Love" and "Solitude" which is Black Sabbath cover.

yeah, i've had it for almost a week, given it about a dozen listens and i am thoroughly enjoying it.

the Sabbath cover is awesome - but did you notice the subtle change to lyrics? "Smoking and Tripping is all that I do" was changed to "crying and thinking is all that I do."

It's very mellow, "Solitude" is about as metal or fast as this album gets... great for dreary days or quiet nights with a book.

As uku said, "it's not their best" - and I'll agree, giving those honors to "Perdition City" or "Bergtatt" depending upon my mood at the time, but "Shadows of the Sun" is still a great album, even by Ulver standards.

well..from a newalbum i've listened just to Sabbath's cover. and it's good. i still prefer Perdition City album. lot of people say, ther work (as a black metal band) was better...i disagree. it's lot of good black metal bands, but good experimental - electronic bands are very rare. =)

Thanks for the link. Interesting answer session. Funny to see him put that silly "Nattens Madrigal" rumor about it being recorded to rest by pointing out the obvious - it's kinda tough to get electricity in the forest.

I was just wondering if anyone else has heard the new album? I'm just listening to their debut album and reminiscing over 'Perdition City' and 'Blood Inside' and remembered I still needed to try and find this album. Anyone?

"Shadows of the Sun?"

i really like it. it's almost unbelievably mellow - very relaxing to listen to. one of my favorite albums of the year. it's a huge adjustment from Blood INside, which at times was really really busy and chaotic.

they cover Sabbath's "Solitude" on the new one, a great cover, but that also gives you an idea of the vein of the entire album.

personally, i highly recommend it, particularly if you liked "Perdition City."

What do you not like about the electronica afterwards? I know it's not in accordance with some people's taste, but I to say they don't exist is an insult to the band.

Their debut 'Bergtatt' is a great one to start off on. Good Black Metal mixed with acoustics. Very "atmospheric." Their all acoustic, 1995 release 'Kveldssanger' and cold, electronica album 'Perdition City' are my two favorites. I'd try any of those you think you're interested in.

I listened to Bergtatt for the first time last night, and I think it's amazing. I love black metal with clean vocals, and his way of switching between growls and clean singing is very impressive.

it's my favorite metal album. i love the flow and development of it - how it goes from a blissful walk in the sunny woods to being caught in a terrifying forest at night. the 34 minute length is about perfect - it's short enough that it never seems to grow stale or tiresome - and it's easy to just hit the play button again when it ends.
