Radu's Batch Of Worthwhile 2020 Stuff

About time I started doing year progress lists, and about time I stopped calling myself a noob. Let's see how far into the year I get before I get too lazy to update this. Probably farther than Mercurial.

Will include some non-metal stuff and some stuff that isn't on Bandcamp, so don't limit yourself to the cool Bandcamp embeds from above.

I wish I had the time to review every single album here. Instead I'll probably review some shitty Power metal to fill my self-imposed quotas. At least some of these I will get to review, or someone else will. Keep an eye on that.

1. Victory Over The Sun - A Tessitura Of Transfiguration
3rd Jan ~ Avant Black Metal ~ Oregon, USA ~ Unsigned ~ One (wo)man band with a very messy take on black metal, but it's a beautiful and cathartic mess.
2. Vengeful Spectre - Vengeful Spectre
7th Jan ~ Black / Folk Metal ~ China ~ Pest Productions ~ Chinese black metal where the folk part are clearly Chinese, and hopefully not another case of Ghost Bath.
3. Dragged Into Sunlight - Terminal Aggressor II
10th Jan ~ Atmo / Blackened Sludge ~ UK ~ Prosthetic Records ~ Apparently released by the label without the band's consent, so make sure not to pay one dime for it, but the one 28-minutes-long track absolutely leveled me.
4. Kassad - London Orbital
10th Jan ~ Post-Black Metal ~ UK ~ Hypnotic Dirge Records ~ Not a better fitting label name for this Kassad release, and also the London reference in the title makes me feel like this is atmo black metal's answer to Burial's Untrue.
5. Kawir - Adrasteia
10th Jan ~ Black Metal ~ Greece ~ Iron Bonehead Productions ~ Part folky part traditional black metal take on Greek mythology tales of the vengeance of women.
6. Lotus Thief - Oresteia
10th Jan ~ Post ~ New York, USA ~ Prophecy Productions ~ A less violent take that the previous entry on Greek tragedy, lush, suave and very focused on the balance between beautiful atmospheres and heaviness, with obvious emphasis on the former.
7. Poppy - I Disagree
10th Jan ~ Electropop / Alt Metal ~ California, USA ~ Sumerian Records ~ I am so happy we live in a world where Poppy released a pop metal mashup on Sumerian Records and it fucking slaps.
8. Vvilderness - Dark Waters
10th Jan ~ Post-Black Metal ~ Hungary ~ Unsigned ~ Another one of those post-bm one-man bands, black metal sections have some actual meat to them and the folk in it makes the atmosphere even more endearing.
9. Yoth Iria - Under His Sway
13th Jan ~ Black Metal ~ Greece ~ The core of this band is two ex-Rotting Christ members, who were also part of some big names like Varathron, Necromantia and Thou Art Lord, and it's not very good news for Rotting Christ that this 3 songs EP is more exciting than anything they did last decade.
10. Body Void - Body Void / Keeper [Split]
15th Jan ~ Sludge ~ California, USA ~ Roman Numeral Records ~ I'm not gonna say no to more punishing claustrophobic sludge from Body Void, and this also proves it's high time we got a Keeper full length
11. Ether Coven - Everything Is Temporary Except Suffering
17th Jan ~ Post/Sludge Metal ~ Florida, USA ~ Century Media Records ~ Sludge with both a very depressive post edge to it as well as loads of metalcore, their first on a big label and since changing their name, and it seems to have worked well for them. Get this thing on Bandcamp for fuck's sake.
12. Garganjua - Toward The Sun
17th Jan ~ Doom Metal ~ UK ~ Holy Roar Records ~ Kinda stoner, kinda post, kinda prog, mostly doom, very expansive and absolutely gorgeous.
13. Grin - Transluscent Blades
17th Jan ~ Sludge Metal ~ Germany ~ Crazysane Records ~ When I say that this sludge album is bassy I fucking mean it, plus the clean vocals are really cool and give the songwriting a lot more dynamism, though it wasn't lacking without it.
14. L'Homme Absurde - Belong
17th Jan ~ Post-Black Metal ~ Russia ~ Independent ~ Another great example of a Russian band blending black metal, post-rock and hardcore to great effect, some of the most beautiful black metal of this year so far.
15. Horned Almighty - To Fathom The Master's Grand Design
17th Jan ~ Black Metal ~ Denmark ~ Scarlet Records ~ Didn't expect to like such a traditional black metal that much, but they take some kinda punky black/death sound and play it so damn well.

Kawir is such a good band but I always forget to listen to them until they release something new. Something about them just isn't that memorable.

The bad thing with doing year lists imo is that you end up listening to so much average and bad stuff. I will just sit back this year and be served, how do I know whats good here?

This is generally stuff I found worthwhile from the year. Some of it might be taken off the list, some more might get added, as I'm processing every new big release day. Obviously you might think some of the stuff here is not worth your time, but I can't model my list for everybody's taste.

Knowing you, I'd say that out of the ones so far you'll like Victory Over The Sun and that think I sent you in a PM but you didn't reply.

When I think of it, I am a bit tired of my own taste and how it selects what I should liten to, its quite unsurprising. I will try to listen to everything you add here.

Victory Over The Sun sounds decent, stays a bit too safe though.

Great photo. I'll be visiting this often because you clearly know better what I like than I do myself.
