I never hear it brought up but I wanna throw 2009 into the Best Metal Year conversation, comparing this to the year before it's insane. I didn't even give my favourite band an honourable mention as there was already too many.
D666, Ruins, Nazxul, Razor of Occam, Pestilential Shadows... Nice year for Aussie Black Metal. Didn't find anything particularly memorable about 2009, although it seemed to be a strong year for folk. Here is my list: 1. Varathron - Stygian Forces Of Scorn 2. Ensiferum - From Afar 3. This is probably the year I know the least in post 80's music, I don't think I've even heard 25 releases from then. Still, some good stuff: 1. Havohej - Kembatinan Premaster 2. Nokturnal Mortum - Голос сталі 3. Vektor - Black Future 4. Exivious - Exivious 5. Gnaw Their Tongues - All the Dread Magnificence of Perversity 6. Dream Theater - Black Clouds & Silver Linings Non metal stuff: 1. goreshit - My Love Feels All Wrong 2. Ho-Kago Tea Time - Ho-Kago Tea Time 3. Mass of the Fermenting Dregs - World Is Yours 4. La Fanfare Vagabontu - Rabbids Go Home (yes this is the soundtrack to a rabbids game on the wii and it's an absolute banger)

This was already the time when I stopped following new releases in all metal on a regular basis, got stuck with my old stuff. There are three albums from 2009 though that are relevant for me, being all-time favourites. They are: 1. Be'lakor - Stone's Reach 2. My Dying Bride - For Lies I Sire 3. Process Of Guilt - Erosion Then there are a couple of good releases I came across once but dont return to ever. They are, in no particular order: Ulcerate - Everything Is Fire Vektor - Black Future Wine From Tears - Through The Eyes Of A Mad My Lament - Broken Leaf While Heaven Wept - Vast Oceans Lachrymose Paradise Lost - Faith Divides Us - Death Unites Us Asphyx - Death...
