SYL guitarist Jed Simon has issued the following update on the band's MySpace page:
"Hey!
The good folks at the Download Festival have put our entire set up for viewing.
See the link in our 'bio' section. [Or check it out here.]
I watched the whole thing again, and it still gives me goosebumps. That was an amazing event, and a great day. Thanks to all of you who were there to see us, and to those who weren't but enjoyed it anyway! Welcome to the family.
With Metal in our Veins,
JS"

Once an underground phenomenon, the Canadian quartet STRAPPING YOUNG LAD are now on the verge of a major genre-defying breakthrough with Alien, their highly anticipated fourth studio album. This offering is quickly going to redefine the meaning of extreme. Follow the link (http://mp4.centurymedia.com/audio/syl_shitstorm.mp3) to download the mind-blowing track "Shitstorm" from Alien, the group's most maniacal and outlandish offering yet. Take some time to sit down, clear your mind and prepare yourself for devastation.
Beginning Feb. 8th the first segment of "The Making of Alien" will be online and a new installment will be posted each Tuesday leading up to the album's release on March 22nd.
STRAPPING YOUNG LAD documented their entire recording process, and the first four parts will provide an in-depth look into Armoury Studios (Kiss, Van Halen) where mastermind Devin Townsend (vocals, guitars) describes how the album was assembled.
Also, for the first time, fans can witness how Gene Hoglan (ex-Death, ex-Testament), Byron Stroud (now also in Fear Factory) and Jed Simon lay their tracks down. The final three parts of this series will focus on the more technical aspects (gear, settings, samples, etc.) of the recording.
The follow-up to the group's critically acclaimed 2003 release, SYL, is frontman Devin Townsend's personal cathartic outlet to unleash all of his angst, and it proves to be a very positive therapeutic experience for both him and his fans. The group also has extensive touring plans already in the works and expect an announcement to be made soon.

According to Blabbermouth.net, the Canadian band set the title of the new album as "Alien". The release of the album is scheduled for March 2005, through Century Media Records.
"It took drummer Gene Hoglan (Dark Angel, ex-Death) only three days in late August to pound through 11 tracks at the Armoury in Vancouver before the band moved on to Greenhouse Studios (also in Vancouver) to record the guitars and vocals. The remaining work is being done in SYL mainman Devin Townsend's studio in Maple Ridge (suburb of Vancouver). Songtitles set to appear on the CD include:
01. Imperial
02. Skeksis
03. Shitstorm
04. Love?
05. Shine
06. Possessions
07. Landscape
08. Zen
09. What's New, Pussycat? (Tom Jones cover)
SYL will release their first-ever DVD, entitled "For Those Aboot To Rock (Live at the Commodore)", on November 15 through Century Media Records. The disc features a full set from the band's sold-out hometown show at The Commodore Ballroom in Vancouver recorded earlier this year, plus some "hilarious" backstage antics and video clips. The DVD will be available for the price of a regular CD".

The maniacal Canadians STRAPPING YOUNG LAD have officially re-signed with Century Media Records worldwide and are already hard at work on the follow-up to their critically acclaimed SYL album. The group also just completed their first DVD, which is set for a late summer release. The DVD features a full set from the band's sold-out hometown show at The Commodore Ballroom in Vancouver recorded earlier this year, plus some hilarious backstage antics and video clips. Expect a new STRAPPING YOUNG LAD studio album to surface early next year, which you know will be well worth the wait.
SYL mastermind Devin Townsend (vocals, guitars) checks in with the following update on the group's current activities,
"Here-de-scoop... the SYL DVD is really quite INSANE looking. Marcus Rogers, who shot the 'Relentless' video, put together the entire thing. It features interviews, a really sick show, crushing audio and cool graphics. This will hopefully be the product that shows more people how fucking bad-ass we actually are as a live force. I wanted to call it 'for those aboot to rock'...but was promptly outvoted. Byron Stroud (bass) is rocking the globe with Fear Factory right now, this is killer for many reasons. He gets to keep doing what he loves with good friends behind a smokin' new record, while affording sir Gene Hoglan and myself the opportunity to fuck each other up with new SYL material as we prepare the new record. You heard it right folks, the mighty SYL have re-signed a deal with longtime partners in crime Century Media Records to make not only the DVD, but also two more full-length discs!!! FUCK YEAH! METAL!!! I personally have had some mighty brainstorms on the Strapping creative front... Black Infinity, Space Metal, Zen, Physics, Spirit, Death, Void, Birth, you name it. The last record, SYL, as cool as it was, can be expanded on now in so many ways. The commitment is there, and where SYL was to be the bludgeoning, classic heavy metal live anthem record, the new material is just FUCKED. More chaos, more loops, more echos, more chaos more chaos more chaos, and it is BEAUTIFUL this time around as well. I've been talking to my old buddy Daniel Bergstrand, who was responsible for the sonics on City, and there's a real good possibility that we will come together for the new material. New songs: Love, Imperial, Jux, Black Infinite, Zen Of Metal. Stay tuned for more SYL than you can shake a comb at."

STRAPPING YOUNG LAD will film their first-ever DVD on Friday, January 16 at the Commodore Ballroom in Vancouver, British Columbia. The as-yet-untitled disc, due later in the year through Century Media Records, will contain lots of outtake footage recorded over the past decade and is a precursor to the new STRAPPING YOUNG LAD CD, which is set to be recorded late summer.
In other news, STRAPPING YOUNG LAD mainman Devin Townsend has posted the following message on his official web site:
"I will release two website-only records in late February (the albums go to the layout place Jan 13th). These records are fun and not meant to be taken very seriously. 'Fan-only' records, but both of them are excellent and at least 72 minute long. I did the art and layout as well...(Haha!!!)
"One is 'Ass-sordid II' with all the old demos from my early bands NOISESCAPES and GREY SKIES as well as a whole whack of lost songs from the early days. A full 72-minute CD worth!
"The second album is called 'Devlab', and in a explosion I assembled together all my year-long laptop workings when I got home from the SYMPHONY X tour. I wanted to make a completely fucked record that compliments schizophrenia or flu symptoms...
"Honestly, some people will absolutely HATE it, so I don't recommend it to everyone. Just people who want to hear what a Devin Townsend 72-minute long ambient record would be like. (and even them I strongly caution)
"That being said, I LOVE it, but just so I don't kill my career, I'll only make it available through the site. There's a bit of writing in the booklets as well. Just descriptions and ramblings. Lots of pretentious shit...either you like it or you don't... If not, buy MESHUGGAH, OPETH, DIMMU, and WEEN instead. They fucking RULE!"
