Battle Hymns is the début album by the four piece Conanic metal band from New York. It is also Manowar's humblest album in terms of posturing, feel and attitude. This may well be attributed to the fact that Manowar still were a rather young band trying to find their niche, but as Joey DeMaio's bass solo "William's Tale" will attest the band members themselves were anything but modest. No, what really keeps the band and this album from banging on the doors of Valhalla is the fact that the true metal warriors still have one foot firmly planted in hard rock. Incidentally, the rock influence is also Battle Hymns' greatest strength.

Although hard rock influenced and quite different from their later material, it's solid and contains their first classic (Battle Hymn). William's Tale wasn't necessary, though...

Re-listening to this album today and it really is superb. I'd forgotten how many great tracks there are. Fast Taker still one of my favourite heavy metal songs ever.

Best Manowar album. This can be attributed to the fact that they had not hired the child abuser Karl master of weak, insipid, boring riffs. Manowar during the Karl years is nothing but the sounds of a haunted guitarist and keyboardist, frail, puny and battling imaginary metal enemies.

You are not metal enough until you visit Kenya. The cradle of mankind, where man learnt first to work with stones and first enjoyed the sounds produced by banging stones which later influenced metal in all its sounds and genres.

Bad English

It was long time ago then I listened these poswers, now its time for true (poser) metal. For 80's this is so so, because many bands did blow better as this one, but its not bad album, but this is how overrated Conan born , I dont get all about this band and muscle metal and steel lifting? Beck to music, well there are many better bands anyway

Old school fun. The title track and Dark Avenger is excellent epic heavy metal and Fast Taker, Metal Daze and Manowar are simple heavy metal done right. The rythm section with Joey Demaio in the front really shines on this one. Great stuff!

Not a bad debut, but not exactly brilliant either.
The title track is the only real stand out track for me on this one. I would say this is probably on par with It's next release Into Glory Ride, and Hail To England was to be a slight improvement over this. But the the production had always remained below standard around that era.
