One of the most influential rock bands that have ever existed, in my opinion!

Until their first album, The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn, led by Syd Barrett.
From there on having David Gilmour on the guitar, together with Roger Waters composing the music for Dark Side Of The Moon, Wish You Were Here and Animals.
Roger Waters composed The Wall and The Final Cut almost completely by himself. And after that he left the band.
Pink Floyd produced 2 more albums after The Final Cut.

They have performed recently on the Live8 festival, and they're touring again. Unfortunately, I'm not going to see them here in Holland. I don't know if Roger Waters is touring with them now or if it's just him and other band members.

I wonder what you all think of this band. What album you like best and what period you prefer (With Syd or with Roger Waters)?

But wether you like this band or not, they truly have had a damn lot of influence on the music of today.

I can say I've grown up with them, It was the only music my parents listened to, together with celtic folk and Inti Illimani.

Did you heard Dream Theater's official bootleg Dark Side of the Moon?

I don't know why, I bought every single Pink Floyd album but the only one I play almost daily is wish you were here...

the rest of their albums are good, but WYWH is just an astounding piece of work.

Pink Floyd is the one of my favorite bands too. "The Division Bell" is the greatest album for all the times. A lot of years I can't constrain the tears, listening to "High Hopes".

Did you see? NOBODY can say Pink Floyd is not influential or amazing or wonderful or unique or something like that =P

(Yes, yes... it's one of my favourite bands) And I'm proud I can say I was born listening to Shine on your crazy diamond (my father wanted me to be born with that song, so he took a tape recorder and his flute to the hospital and.... well, he's crazy!). They have something in their music that makes it different from anything, from songs like Wish you were here, or Nobody home, that are made with 3 or 4 chords only, to the most complex and dark of them. You know... something in the way they play, in the way they make you feel their music, because they weren't brilliant musicians but they managed to be different and to reach people's deepest emotions.

Or didn't they?

That's pretty cool! If my wife (if I'll ever manage trapping a bitch ) I'll propose an idea like that to her.

They are my favorite band....I love every album from PATGOD to DB.

I often daydream what would happen if Roger Waters stayed in the band maybe they would still play together or made some more cds...

David Gilmour joined the band in 1968, and the first album with him on guitar is A Saucerful of Secrets - 1968. Atom Heart Mother is 1970. Between 68 and 70, Pink Floyd released Ummagumma and Soundtrack of the Film MORE, not to mention the soundtrack of famous cult film Zabriskie point.

Sorry I hit the wrong key, and it got posted before I finished, I shall continue now

Period 4 Knighthood -Make more money by PLAYING THE SAME SONGS OVER AND OVER AGAIN.

Period 5 Ok, We Have Heard Enough.

That is a bit "tongue in cheek" but I do get the impression that messrs. Gilmour, Wright and Mason have been taken over by a vorocious commercial machine bent on selling product.

I guess this should not suprise anyone, you could see the change in late 1967 when Syd Barret was ousted. I find that period the most mysterious period. The Floyd, as they were known, were out there, on the fringes, challenging art, culture, morality and sanity.

Then Gilmour came along. He is a great lyrical guitarist, blues based , pentatonic scale ect. totally different from Barrett. What Barrett lacked in skill, he more then made up for in creativity. What Gilmour lacked in creativity, he more them made up for in skill.

Dark side of the moon is a freightening recording, perfectly executed and conceived.

Animals is another alienating recording, that dosent mean I dont like it I do, I just find the drone of the vocals wearing and the tone of the recording oppressive.

I like the soundcapes that Most pink Floyd albums create, I just wonder why the lyrics on the recordings, post Meddle, are so depressing. Meddle, by contrast, has some uplifting lyrics.

Any ways, if you want a glimpse into early floyd there are a couple cheap dvd's that provide same. London session and Live at Pompei. I preferred them before they were tarnished by the huge fame and wealth that dark side brought them.

Argubly the most signifigant rock band of all time, so far.

yeah, the middle of "meddle" is fairly uplifting - San Tropez, Seamus are both happy, and Fearless is inspiring.

That is my second favorite Pink Floyd album, behind "Darkside of the Moon" - but it's a close second.

Bitter Cold, your name sounds like an immortal song, How did you manage to get that moving image as your avatar.

the moniker kind of is a slight immortal tribute - i was listening to a lot of immortal and enslaved shortly after finding the site, and about roughly the same time i received a piece of junk mail addressed to a "Bitter C Old", a bastardized version of my irl nickname, "Old Bitter Craig" - it just seemed perfect for the site, so i collapsed the spaces, switched to it, and it's stuck.

as for the image, found someone else using it on another site, saved the image, and uploaded it as my avatar. nothing original on my part.

I've noticed that every time I play Wish You Where Here in the living room, a friend of my mother or father walks by and says: hey, Pink Floyd. Even if they are hearing only a couple of seconds, their music is apparently so much theirs everybody recognizes it immediately.

At any college party I ever went to, from a small gathering of 6-10 friends to larger party parties, if there was an acoustic guitar present, someone would, without fail, break into that song.

i like pink floyd when Syd Barrett (rip) were the frontman of the band ... i like THE PIPER AT THE GATES OF DAWN. specially the song called BIKE ... i think pink floyd with Syd Barrett was really a scary band.
but i like some songs in Gilmour era... like COMFORTABLY NUMB, FINAL CUT ...
