Year Of No Light - Ausserwelt: one of 2010's little treasures you might have missed.

These French post-metal dudes spent an awful lot of time making their sophomore release, the follow-up to 2006's Nord - another album you might want to add to your Do-Want!-list while you're at it. But all the hard work during their long absence really pays off (ya hear that Korpiklaani?) as Ausserwelt is a clear step-up from their already superb debut record.

I don't want to make you too jealous, first with Ludicra and now with Year Of No Light... but I have seen them 5 times now and the first time was when they still had a vocalist. Saw them four times at Roadburn where they did two different sets last year, one was Ausserwlt and the other was a soundtrack to the Vampyr movie. Both were good to great.
But best gig I saw by them was a couple of days after Roadburn 2010 when they played in a tiny club (could hold a maximum of 100 people) in my hometown of Utrecht and they opened for Altar If Plagues and they played Ausserwlt in its entirety for the first time, with two drummers, and it was the most intense gig I had ever undergone in my life (seeing I have seen thousands of gigs since 1983 you can imagine how impressed and blown away I was)

Even though I have no experience whatsoever in live performances but I can see this kind of music played in small intimate clubs with awesome light-shows , and if they could handle the intensity of their music in such live show it would be a once in life time experience

I wouldn't say monumental, it sits high atop the post/sludge/atmo mountain...
You should dig up some videos on youtube performing these songs live, the two drummers are a sight to behold!

It feels monumental if you know what I mean, it has this glorious vibe and even though it might not be the best ever it feels as if it's perfect

It is a forward-thinking effort, but it gets stale after a few songs. I used to like it but sadly, it's not made to last.

To me it just keeps getting better. A fine example of the more modern post metal sound.

Unique sound, harsh but fragile too. Organized greatly as post music. Very deep and emotional, especially "01. Perséphone I" and "04. Abbesse".

Yup, one of those albums that you can put on repeat and not feel bored even after it has played for 5 times!

Messing around with this one again. Amazing stuff. So much going on in the music.

There's a lot of pretty good Post Metal out there, but this album for me sits among a few albums atop everything else the genre has offered.

For me this is one of the best albums of all times. The atmosphere, the tone, the heaviness, those compositions and strange melodies, everything is a blast. Amazing piece. Got lucky to see them live, a shame was I got to the gig quite late. But I've still caught 2 songs they played from Ausserwelt and was blown away how good they are live.

Aye, it has not lost any of its' touch at all. Still one of the better post-metal albums out there. The whole "Perséphone" should be used as a textbook example.
