"Damn, damn, damn. Talk about a schizophrenic reaction to music...I was really stoked on hating this. In fact, even as I sit and listen to it, something in my brain is telling me I should hate this...but I have to admit, this is actually pretty solid."

Doc Godin

One of the most praised thrash releases of 2011, Time Is Up is indeed an album that instantly infects one's brain with its catchy songs and almost lives up to the hype created around it. After this album, Havok will certainly need no introduction, but as of now, let me give you some basic info. Havok come from Denver and are part of the new wave of thrash. They already have one album under their belt, which received a lot of positive feedback, too.

Rating: 8 A fun album, but not full of original ideas, which is what I am looking for in modern thrash, but the current rating speaks for itself. Chances are high one will enjoy this record.

Rating: 9 to the average rating.

Edit (4 days later): Actually, I agree with Troy (see below). Loved at first, rushed to the 9, but have already got pretty bored of it.

Edit: Actually... It's like steroids. I listen to it, get really pumped, want to hit stuff, stomp on legos, and maybe commit date rape. Then it wears off and I get really moody. It's really only okay in short bursts. Gotta pace myself with it is all.

I think it's kind of fun at first, but that feeling wore off before I even got to the halfway point. I'd put this up/down there with Artillery's latest. Not that they sound that similar (I think Havok are more revivalist and Artillery threw in some power metal elements), but both have a sort of initial attraction that wears off quickly.
R'Vannith - 26.04.2011 at 09:16
Rating: 9 As a whole I don't think the album wears off at all. Perhaps a few of the tracks can get a bit tedious after repeated listens, but excellent tracks like 'Killing Tendencies' and 'Scumbag in Disguise' I could listen many times over without growing bored.
I agree that the album is a bit weaker on the 2nd half though.

Why isn't this on the top 20 for 2011?

They aren't a featured band due to an incomplete profile.

Rating: 9 A cracking album. Engineering is good, there's enough difference between tracks and overall has a thrash-stomping pace.
I have and will continue to reccomend it left right and centre - the only negative thing i can say is that it's not one of those albums that will remain in my mind further than the next few months, it's great - but it's not one of THE greats.

exactly! I don't even know what is better know. Letting the band be invisible to preserve the rating from those who actually listened to the album and rated or expose it to the masses, which will do two things: bring 1s and 2s but also will let more people to check the album out.

well probably it is impossible to give it to the masses and to not get the "1" or "2" ratings. i dont know. personally i like searching on the "new releases" page so i dont miss the new albums with good ratings. i dont know. i find it AWFULL that many people "destroy" the albums ratings just to see their fav album on top and the funny is that we are still in may so with every new release of a great band we'll see many "1" ratings in the previously released albums.... it is very sad... the newest albums dont have the CHANCE to get the scores the oldest-classic albums have...

This is some pretty high quiality thrash tbh... and I don't even like thrash that much but its vicious energy is amazing! I disagree with you, this shit does not get old fast... Well as long as you don't overplay it anyway, a few times a month is cool for me who isn't a big thrash dude anyway. So far this is my thrash pick of the year.

This is some pretty high quiality thrash tbh... I disagree with you, this shit does not get old fast...

I find its replay value diminished as it's just a typical rehashing of what thrash already conquered more than 20 years ago. I'm not saying I expect all new thrash bands to blow the likes of Sodom, Slayer, Overkill, Artillery, Kreator, Testament, Coroner, Destruction, etc. out of the water, but something a little more innovative and possibly more enticing wouldn't hurt.

I'll say this: Havok know how to play fast, and their high-octane assault is nice enough to listen to at first, but after a few listens it's easy to feel a little desensitized, especially when you've heard it all done before, and better.

I'm not interested in Overkill, artillery, kreator, testament or destruction... Like I said, mi interest in thrash is close to zero, this is oddly enough better than those bands to me.

Well there lies the purpose for bands like this to exist: to get non-thrash fans (I don't mean that as an insult by the way) into thrash, and I suppose to further entice thrash fans into keeping up with the scene, but these new bands just don't appeal to my tastes at all.

Either way, just look at the overall rating. Obviously I'm part of a minority here.

Very good, but best album of 2011? No.

On the other hand, whoever gave this a 1 should be punished.

Unfortunately it's going to keep happening because, as opposed to rating an album based on how good it actually is, a good amount of voters just want their favorite albums to win, so they zero whatever is in first place. It's the reason everything is so low all of a sudden and it's ridiculous.

Indeed, a rating of 1 would mean it's one of the worst albums you have ever heard in your whole life, I don't think there would be more than 5 albums on this site worth a 1 rating.

Rating: 10 Well, definitely they got it!! haha

You can perfectly put rating's 1, like the same way you put 10, it is pefectly reasonable. The problem is when you see a guy of this kind:

List Top 5 year X
----------------------
1. album a: rating 10
2. album b: rating 9
3. album c: rating 9
4. album d: rating 8
5. album e: rating 1

In this case he is visualizing his way of thinking, his stupidity (it is only one of the more painful examples, you know exists more example's types like this), but really there are more people like this, that doesn't visualize his thinking, so you can't prove it -> people that apparently seeing their collection, lists, favorites bands, etc, has similar tastes, in this case for example with thrash metal, and still he votes with rating 1 (my god, put rating 3 at least haha), well, even no problem, it can be... until you see that his favorite album of the year is, ta chan!, number 1 in the MetalStorm top 20 of the year haha.

Well, in my opinion one of the keys of this album is its perfect sound that they have been able to get, simply awesome. Being an album of pure thrash metal that at first glance it may seem to someone too dense, it is not true, each song is able to show its own personality, and this is another of the keys. And i'm not going to speak about their technique, musical composition, well, yes haha, in my opinion they are very good! By the way the drummer is , also i love the voice with this little touch of black (at least to my ears).
Conclusion, really a surprise for me to see such great thrash metal album for this year, a perfect example.

Thrash Metal is dead?? I laugh at them. Move the head!!! fuck!! hahaha.
