It looks like Ensiferum, it sounds like Ensiferum, but is this actually Ensiferum?

I, like most Ensiferum fans, was rather disappointed upon initially hearing the band's 2012 effort Unsung Heroes. The album's pacing was much slower than the much-heralded From Afar, the atmosphere rather mellow in comparison to their other works and the sense of composition more subdued and subtle. As most metal listeners know, the first few listens of an album can be deceiving; I mean, after all, how many of us truly wrapped our heads around Opeth's Blackwater Park the first time we listened to it? I don't mind spending some time with the albums I have at my disposal and giving Unsung Heroes a number of listens has proven to be one of the greatest rewards this habit has given me as of late. Unsung Heroes is, for all intents and purposes, quite unsung (no pun intended, of course).

If they could go back to the sound in Iron and Ensiferum, it would be awesome.

I'm afraid that it'll be more like the greatest album of 2012, cause Dec 2011 is usually a placeholder
Saw them live last month, and I'm sure this one will rule!

Don't expect that, since the great difference is marked by this genius* : Jari Mäenpää.

* (talent even in the vocals, and more if we compare with Petri Lindroos)

But it was still Markus who wrote the music so I'd say he is the genius in Ensiferum. Jari can do whatever awesome stuff with Wintersun instead

"Apparently" viewing the booklets the music is fifty fifty more or less ("apparently" a little more by Markus in the first album: Ensiferum, but apparently, remember that all the solos in this album are from Jari), and all the lyrics from Jari. Apparently because... why is there the difference of quality that you can see between the albums Ensiferum, Iron, Wintersun and Victory Songs, From Afar.

Iron: All solos by Jari, less "Into Battle" by Markus

02. Iron - Lyrics: Jari Music: Markus and Jari
03. Sword Chant - Lyrics: Jari Music: Jari
05. Tale Of Revenge - Lyrics: Jari Music: Markus
06. Lost In Despair - Lyrics: Jari Music: Markus
07. Slayer Of Light - Lyrics: Jari Music: Markus and Jari
08. Into Battle - Lyrics: Jari Music: Markus and Jari
09. LAI LAI HEI - Lyrics: Jari Music: Jari
10. Tears - Lyrics: Jari and Kaisa Saari Music: Markus

But, well, Markus is very good, yeah =).

Well solos are maybe not the element that makes Ensiferum good because they have very few (3-4 per album) And about the lyrics, well, I won't say that Jari's Ensiferum lyrics suck but they are definitely not good comparing to Sami's lyrics who doesn't only write lai lai hei and battle! fight! dragon!!! It's actually kinda weird, Jari makes awesome lyrics for Wintersun.
I think that Jari is only credited as a co-music-writer because of solo's and maybe some riffs.

I don't really care if you think that older Ensiferum is better or not but you gotta admit that they are more complex and much more interesting nowadays

Your first response was about the "music" (i understood it from a strictly instrumental point of view), so my answer was in that direction: who wrote this "music"?. Now for your second response, well, what is better, the old Ensiferum?, the new? my answer: seems clear that this difference of quality is not only because this "music", the singer is also very important (in this case, he even making all the lyrics while he was in Ensiferum) , this is music too, talent that doesn't have Markus.

Lindroos has great harsh vocals. Better than Jari IMO. Anticipated for this.

Perhaps because they haven't released anything good since Jari left.

They were pretty listenable for me, but I haven't listened to them in ages. Maybe it's just my general lack of interest in folk metal... I probably won't check this out until some months after the release.

I still don't understand why so many people dislike From Afar. I think it's an outstanding and album and has a very unique sound, so it can hardly be even compared to Iron.

I cannot wait for this album. I love all of their releases (not just the first two). They are all fantastic, and I really don't get why people think Victory Songs and From Afar are so different. Petri has done nothing but further the band's career.
