If you could encase within a coffin all that is texturally appealing about doom metal, Pallbearer knowingly carry six of these coffins to their grave in Foundations Of Burden. This is not to suggest that they simply bring the traditional sound of a genre to its untimely end, but, rather, in our modern era they place it respectfully in an ideal and honourable resting place. Ad Memoriam Doom.

Weird. I just recently decided to give their debut another shot because I don't remember being at all impressed with it the first time around.

Weird. I just recently decided to give their debut another shot because I don't remember being at all impressed with it the first time around.

Definitely give it another few listens. It's a highly regarded album and it took me a few listens to get on board, but it definitely meets the hype if I had to be honest. Maybe try listening to their demo instead- once I heard the demo, I didn't visit the full-length album as frequently.

I cannot wait for this album.

Yeah my problem was that I heard the demo first and the album was a bit underwhelming compared to it.

Rating: 8 I had the luck of listening to the debut before the demo and fucking love it. I still listen to it regularly.
I didn't know about this album was so close to being released, great news
Lit. - 05.06.2014 at 06:53
I did listen to the debut before the demo, and found it much more interesting than the former.
Bad English - 12.08.2014 at 13:07
  Nothing special, doom as doom
Boxcar Willy - 12.08.2014 at 16:19
Rating: 9 Gotta jam this soon, loved the debut and the demo.
Ozman - 12.08.2014 at 17:41
Rating: 8 A lot better than the underwhelming debut which was a disappointment compared to the demo.
One of the best doom albums of the year thus far, this one.
Lit. - 12.08.2014 at 21:45
I'd say they're about even in terms of quality, this and the debut.
Unhealer - 13.08.2014 at 17:24
Rating: 8 Seems like they sped-up their doom a bit for this album.
I like it so far, but I don't think I'll like it more than the debut.
Alex Fenger - 13.08.2014 at 17:58
Rating: 8 Yeah this is quite a bit better than the debut. Actually quite a fantastic release. Definitely my favorite doom release of the year
Lit. - 13.08.2014 at 19:11
Second listen: Feels a song too long. Every time so far I've felt satisfied with the playthrough of the album and after the beautiful Ashes, I expect the album to end right there (or want to, at least), then Vanished comes on and I go "Oh god, there's another one." I ended up skipping it this time. Doesn't help that the song is the longest one on the album, and there's nothing particularly memorable about it except the end.

I haven't listened to the demo, but would you say this is on par?
Dark Cornatus - 14.08.2014 at 10:52
Rating: 8 The demo didn't have Foreigner, which is by far the best song for me. For me the demo/studio versions of those two songs are just different, i didn't really find either better or worse. Demo has more prominent vocals, studio sounds beefier with the riffs.

Their best song by far is their cover of Gloomy Sunday.

Debut album has a worse sound overall, too muffled. No room to breathe. And the debut album versions of their own two songs which also featured on the demo don't come near the quality of the demo versions.

Why do you say 'studio sounds'? The demo was also recorded in a studio just like the debut full-length was recorded in a studio.

Rating: 9 Gloomy Sunday is a masterpiece that this band will have a hard time beating.

Yeah they didn't. This isn't as good as the demo. It's a great album. Just not on the same level

I honestly don't think it's a worse sound. It's just thicker to me. I prefer 'Devoid...' on the album, and 'The Legend' on the demo, but i prefer 'Foreigner' and 'An Offering...' even more than those two anyway.

I didn't mean studio as in the recording sounds, i meant the studio, as in album, just bad use of wording haha.

I was just going to comment that. That riff is so memorable.

Rating: 7 I haven't heard the debut, but I did give the demo a spin a year ago or so. And I wouldn't really be able to say which I prefer. But in itself, this is a very nice piece of doom.

Rating: 9 This just gets better & better with every listen for me. A big improvement over their Debut (which I still enjoyed) & much closer to the quality of their fantastic demo

Well, my first impression was the same. The difference is: I haven't given it a 2nd chance... yet.

Will be checking this one out for sure.

Doom of the year me thinks for now.

When it comes to traditional doom, no doubt about that at all. When it comes to doom in general, there are other albums I prefer to this one.

Thanks for mentioning it. I forot I still ahd to get hold of it. I really loved their debut e.p.
And of course the band consists of two Procession members and one ex-Procession member.

Rating: 7 Great atmosphere, but those melodies are incredibly stale. This pales in the face of other epic doom bands...

!J.O.O.E.! - 27.08.2014 at 22:59
Rating: 7 I really want to give this an 8. A lot of great, epic moments on here but it feels like they don't focus on them enough for the 55 minute length. Think I'd rather they stop wandering around the place, shave 15 or 20 minutes off and give us a filtered epic doom number with a better concentration of euphoric riffs. Weirdly 'Ashes' was probably my fave track on this. Probably because it didn't cause my mind to wander like moments of other tracks did.

Gotta be honest though, there's not much justification for Pallbearer being the darling child of doom at the moment. They're good, but not that good. One step forward after the two steps back of the previous album. Still the demo to top / match.
musicalkaratekid - 28.08.2014 at 21:09
Rating: 9 Monumental album in my opinion, and for me one of the finest releases of 2014. It's not for everyone, but I really this style of metal personally. Highlights for me would be 'Worlds Apart', 'The Ghost I used to Be' and the closing 'Vanished', which often reminds me of 'To Bid you Farewell'.

That's the album I mention in the shoutbox sometimes. My favorite doom metal album from this year.

Why isn't this album showing up in the top 20 of 2014 when it's score is high enough for the top 3 ?

Because the band's status is still invisible on the site, for some reason.

Fixed that problem.
Unhealer - 19.09.2014 at 05:42
Rating: 8 I decided for an 8. I have appreciation for this record more deserving of a 9, but what Joe says is true; they wander a lot on most songs and it's a shame.
Dark Cornatus - 20.09.2014 at 01:50
Rating: 8 After listening to this album 5 times, i'm rating it a 8. Amazing atmosphere on some songs. My only gripe is some songs just go nowhere for ages (like track 2 and 3), i feel like these songs could be broken up a little more. I think it's almost on par with the first album for me which i loved. Their method for this album is almost identical to the first album, so it was easily to enjoy. I'd like to see a little more variations in their sound sometimes though, as it's pretty flat listening to the albums through from start to finish. Great album all the same.

Favourite songs: 'World's Apart' is the standout, 'The Ghost i Used to Be' is awesome, especially toward the middle. These two songs are easily up there with Foreigner, my personal favourite.
Boxcar Willy - 23.09.2014 at 04:42
Rating: 9 Yeah, this is really good, even with a little wandering it still manages to hold my attention (which is a feat). The fuzzy low end and soaring leads combined with the angelic vocals really make this band the tops of trad doom. (not that I delve deep into this style, so bear with me, Marcel)
RVN - 08.10.2014 at 13:25
Rating: 10 Brilliant.
Khassar - 13.10.2014 at 14:18
Rating: 9 Excellent album on par with previous work Sorrow and Extintion, requires a few times of listeting since it is not so catchy on a first listen. In my oppinion, Pallbeare put some great effort to compose something more complex and uncatchy, but still so unique and enjoyable to listen in the end.
