With an album cover like that, I had every right to mistake this for an OSDM release. Well if it was an OSDM release, I probably wouldn't have bothered to come back to it after 8 months.

It's fine. It's well made and everything, but very ordinary to my ears. Definitely more deserving bands out there.

Not sure I would call this "very ordinary". It's certainly not groundbreaking or very unique by any means, but I'd say they manage to combine a more melodic and accessible songwriting style with a fairly aggressive edge in a way that not many death metal bands are very good at. On top of that I'm a big fan of the use of clean vocals throughout, and the production is certainly perfectly suited to the style. Like the fine man above me said, there are more deserving bands for the title of best DM of the year, but this is to my ears an extremely enjoyable listen.

Care to share with the class who? Because I agree that this Hath album is right up there with the best 2019 DM releases so far.

Well that wouldn't be the biggest achievement as 2019 hasn't been that strong for death metal, but for argument's sake I'd pick over this the likes of Inoculation, Nucleus, Abyssal, Consummation, Venom Prison, Noctambulist, maybe a handful of others like Musmahhu, but I ended not really coming back to that too much. The real winners this year despite their brief length would be Mortal Incarnation, and Suffering Hour (if we're including blackened sounds). As I said I find this album fine for what it is, but a whole album's worth is too much for my attention given it lacks a bit of character and is a bit "of the people" with it's, to me, ordinary, sound.

There are clean vocals in this? I don't remember any.

Are you sure you've listened to this album? :-D Your idea of conventional sounding is clearly very different from mine. I'm not familiar with either Consummation or Noctambulist so will check those out.

I think Hath, Misery Index, Tomb Mold, Ripped to Shreds, Disentomb, Embrional, Wachenfeldt and Allegaeon (admittedly melodic tech-death) have released my best DM of 2019 so far. It's been a pretty good year as far as I'm concerned.

I do like that Abyssal record but I'd say it's blackened death, leaning more towards black.

Venom Prison I couldn't get on with but I'll give it another try some time.

Inoculation was last year if I'm not wrong.

I had a skim back through the album and it seems like there is a few examples of some subtle background cleans. Not quite as prevalent as Alex led me to believe there for a second

And yeah, looks like one of the Inoculation Bandcamp pages states 2019 despite it clearly being a last year release.

Personally I wouldn't go near Disentomb and Allegaeon's brand of death metal, very much not my bag, but I might try out Tomb Mold's new one as it seems some people are saying it was better than the last, which I also found a bit ho-hum. Ripped To Shreds was good though.

I disagree about Abyssal though. They're always had a blackened element to them, but the new one still has strains of OSDM running through it, despite its almost ambient-like approach to their sound. They've effectively taken Portal's sound to an extreme.

I loved 'Manor of Infinite Forms' but the new one is even better.

What's wrong with Disentomb? Are you not in to brutal-death? Great band, great album.

I get the ambient-like comment. Never listened to Portal but I hear so much in there... heavy-doom, drone, atmospheric-black and yeah there is a track which starts with a pummeling OSDM riff before disappearing in to the murk that reminds me of early Nile. I do really like it though and this chat has led me back to it.

I gave Venom Prison another go but still don't get on with the vocals. They jar me for some reason.
