Sonisphere UK - Cancelled

Although there has been no official announcement yet, various sources, including the official Queen website, claim that the Sonisphere Festival in the UK has been cancelled. Further supporting this claim, tickets are no longer available for purchase from the Sonisphere website.

It is reported that this message was posted on the queenonline.co.uk website: "It is with very heavy hearts and much regret that we announce the cancellation of Sonisphere Knebworth 2012". The Queen website has since been down since posting the message however.

It is thought there will be an official announcement tomorrow.

The festival was to be headlined by KISS, Queen + Adam Lambert, and Faith No More.

UPDATE: As promised, the organizers have now issued an official statement confirming that Sonisphere UK has been cancelled.

"It is with very heavy hearts and much regret that we announce the cancellation of Sonisphere Knebworth 2012. Putting the festival together in what is proving to be a very challenging year was more difficult than we anticipated and we have spent the last few months fighting hard to keep Sonisphere in the calendar. Unfortunately circumstances have dictated that we would be unable to run the festival to a standard that both the artists and that Sonisphere's audience would rightly expect. We want to express our deepest regrets to the artists and to thank all the staff, suppliers and contractors who worked so hard with us to try and pull off what has proven to be an impossible task and we know how much they share in our disappointment. We also want to send a huge thanks to the Sonisphere fans who stuck by us and we are so sorry that we can't fulfil what we set out to do. Ticket holders will automatically receive a full refund direct from their ticket agents. Team Sonisphere."

And considering how much young folk is unemployed over there, I bet not that many were arsed to go anyway.

Funniest thing is they call it Queen when only May and Taylor are in it, so only half of the original Queen line-up, not even Deacon would have been in on it, apparently

I don't even know who "Faith No More" is and I don't think anyone really wants to see Queen without Freddie Mercury. Kiss is way pass their time and can't really attract a big enough crowd by themselves. I'd say they had it coming. A few good bands in the fine print but nothing really worth jumping up and down about.

Er, was there.

They're doing some shows with him because apparently he's a massive Queen fan. I love Brian and Roger to death, but they do have most questionable taste in modern music/singers.

Anyway, I believe this is just Queen pulling out of the festival... they said Sonisphere is off on their Facebook, it means that it's off for them as far as I've understood.

Exactly.

Queen was the center stage for this festival and somewhere it was on RS mag that due to some dates shitty problem they were out of this fest. No wonder this show would have been interesting for any(?)one.

Queen being fronted by someone who's only famous through American Idol? *sighs* I agree with Mora about Roger and Brian doing some very questionable things with the Queen name. I thought it was bad enough when they performed on the X Factor... I do love Brian and Roger, but they are dragging the Queen legacy in the mud with all this reality tv nonsense. John Deacon did the right thing jumping ship methinks.

It's sad that it failed but to be honest it's not that surprising - giving your competition a 3-month head-start with names like Black Sabbath and Metallica, pissing off a sizeable amount of your target audience in doing so, and then releasing such a mediocre line-up when you finally announce some acts, isn't really the best way to achieve ticket sales. Sad though, I really want to see Faith No More, I hope there'll be at least one more trip to the UK by them.

I bet Gene Simmons wanted them to charge more for tickets and they couldn't come to an agreement. Tickets near the front sections of the Kiss show here in Toronto are going for $1399 (Canadian Dollars) PER TICKET. Who in their right mind would pay that kind of money for one show.

I wouldn't go THAT harsh on them... it's not like they've appointed him as a permanent singer, and it's not like it's called "Queen", it's "Queen and Adam Lambert", just like it was "Queen + Paul Rodgers". Furthermore, ever since they've decided to continue the legacy of Queen as "wise uncles", as Roger put it, we've had some great things coming from their camp - that 40 years of Queen history book with the series of interviews that followed it shed some wonderful light on their story, and The Queen Extravaganza project is a nice move, although I wish that tour would take place in Europe too.

I've been their fan for 10 years, so I'm probably very biased, but they aren't using the real "Queen" moniker for anything... they're just expanding on it.

I really don't like "reality shows", and feel they are pretty much the antithesis of the integrity and spirit of true musicianship. Which could account for why I'm so disappointed with the recent actions of Roger and Brian. You are right about the "Queen +" thing, which is why I was okay with Queen + Paul Rogers, even though I didn't feel his voice really suited the band. But allowing someone who's only claim to fame is being on Pop Idol front such a legendary band, even it's with the "Queen +" moniker, is going a bit far I think.

I have been a Queen fan for nearly 25 years now, so maybe being a fan for that long is affecting my judgement a bit. I think sometimes, as hard as it is, the best thing you can do, is to leave the legend to rest and just be. And I think that's what should have happened with Queen. I do agree with some of the things you said though, like the Queen history book. But those things could have still been done with Queen being inactive as functioning band.

I do agree with some of the things you said though, like the Queen history book. But those things could have still been done with Queen being inactive as functioning band.

I guess this is just difference in opinions; I think their carrying on the Queen legacy, with all their hit-or-miss actions, is probably the best thing that would have happened to the band, because it brings a new generation to the music of Queen. As much as I dislike Adam Lambert, it's still their choice who they bring on stage with them; and the "Queen +" thing has been going on, in one form or another, ever since that concert they held in Freddie's memory after he died. The band has been fronted by a lot of people, some of which were pretty good (Paul Rodgers, in my opinion, was a really good choice) and some of which are bad, like Adam. But they like him, what can you do about it.

What has also affected my judgement is probably the fact that I was born after Freddie's death, and, as painful as it is to see Queen members not being fronted by Freddie, even to us younger fans, it would have been even more painful to me to never see Brian and Roger on stage. They've granted me my wish by touring with Paul Rodgers; I've seen them in 2008 and that is still the best concert I've ever been on. It wasn't Brian and Roger trying to have a band without Freddie, it was just a bunch of friends having fun on stage, playing Queen and Bad Company and Queen + Paul Rodgers songs. It was very emotional, and at the moment, when they "played" Bijou, with Freddie's pictures on the monitor and his voice in the background of Brian's guitar solo, I cried. I felt like I was the part of the Queen story, paying respect to Freddie's legacy for a brief moment.

They are finally retiring and will only take care of this "background" business in a few years' time, so I guess your wish has been granted, but that also means that someone younger, who missed both tours with Paul, will never get to see Queen members performing Queen songs on stage. Bands can't go on forever, but I'm glad they got on as far as they did.

@Mora: Well, although Freddie was still alive when I became a fan (1988), by that time, Queen had ceased to exist as a live band (due to Freddie's illness, which at that time was only known to his very close friends, and the other Queen members). I was still very young, and by the time I attended my first ever gig in 1992, Freddie had of course by then, passed on. So I had no chance of witnessing Queen live.

It is just a difference of opinions, and I can see it from your point of view, even if I don't entirely agree with it. I have never seen Brian and Roger onstage performing Queen songs live. The closest I got to that was seeing Brian on his Back To The Light solo tour in 1993. I personally would have preffered it, if the Queen legacy and legend had been left to rest in peace with Freddie, but that is only my personal opinion. I know some people, including you, enjoyed Queen + Paul Rogers, and it is nice that some people were able to get something out of that. At least we both agree that Adam Lambert is not a good choice to front the band, even in a "Queen +" capacity.

@Troy: Ah well, I'm just speaking my mind.
