Most underrated album ever....

I can't really agree with you. It's good, true, but the band showed they could write even better songs later... and thankfully without Charlie Dominici!

Very good album, and as Kalisia have shown, decent production really brings out how awesome the songwriting really is. But I do like the nostalgic feeling the bad production gives me...

"Light Fuse And Get Away" is still one of my favorite songs to this day.

Fact is, the production doesn't disturbs me in any way. It's old and has its flaws, but WTF?

And my fav song on this is The Killing Hand. First of their epics, and still one of the best.

Wondeful album. "The Killing Hand" and "The Ones Who Help To Set The Sun" are still two of my favourite Dream Theater songs.

That's a nice album, indeed! I like it a lot! Sounds like real 80's, not end 80's, but middle 80's, with a raspy sound, but it's nice!

I love this early sound of Dream Theater. They really manage to mix in so great melodies in their complex music. So much better than their later material.

Definitely underrated. I'd take this over anything they've done since Six Degrees.

Very underrated debut. Dominici did a great job here. The Killing Hand and Ytse Jam can be considered as DT classics.

They are. I wish they played The Killing Hand live though. It almost never (if ever) happens.

I am not the one who said that. When Petrucci or Portnoy said Dominici's vocals didn't fit in actually it's only their excuse to get rid of him. For me, Kevin LaBrie and Dominici are within the same vocal range.

A lot of bands have humble beginnings, and Dream Theater is most definitely one of them. "When Dream and Day unite" isn't actually a bad album though, and it's only when you compare it to the likes of "Images and Words" that it seems weak. The only real problem I have with DT's debut is the vocals, which are nowhere near as strong as the musicianship taking place in songs as great as 'The Ones who help to set the Sun', and the instrumental 'The Ytse Jam' deserves its place amongst the best songs of DT's career. A slow start for sure, but one that didn't come without its golden moments.

Excellent album! A great starting point for this band, with very nice tunes (A Fortune In Lies, Only A Matter of Time, The Killing Hand)

That's one gay album cover.

Haven't listened to this one enough to properly rate it, but it's a very solid debut. I absolutely adore Fortune In Lies and Ytse Jam, and overall no song on here is very weak. Production is very weird and pretty bad, but I've heard worse. Solid 7 to 7.5.

Underrated

One of very few DT records that I can listen in one go. Better than anything they released after Metropolis pt.2.

Love this guy. Everything he touches turns into gold: Dream Theater, Fates Warning, OSI. Check Chroma Key if you haven't yet. Not metal at all, but Moore enough to enjoy the shit out of it.

I know Chroma Key, listened to the debut album when it came out.

A shame Kevin is not musically active. I only know he guested on two albums in recent years. A Jim Matheos project called Tuesday the Sky and Avandra.

Maybe Jim Matheos can convince him to do a new OSI. That would be awesome. Or maybe he could get back with his Chroma Key. One can only hope.

I think this album should be rerecorded with James. This album is too good to leave in such an unpolished state.

They say "don't judge a book by it's cover", but in this case I can't stand that cover therefore I haven't listened to this album and I probably never will. In my opinion EVERYTHING about an album has to be awesome, including the album cover art, the literature of the lyrics, and even the track titles!

I've never heard of such an argument for not listening to an album. There are plenty of albums with awful album art, but great music nonetheless.

Solid debut from a young band back in 1989. Underrated! Give it a chance.
