MetalStorm.net - Blocked In Iran
So... apparently MetalStorm.net has been blocked by Iranian authorities. As of Sunday, MS has been "filtered" and is no longer accessible in Iran. Yup, Metal Storm is officially too metal for Iran. Several of our Iranian users have reported though that, next to bypass software, the site is still available through https://www.metalstorm.net.
The Islamic Republic of Iran has been filtering social network sites, like MySpace, Facebook, Last.fm, Twitter, Urkat for years now. But since last month authorities have started filtering blogs and websites related to Metal music. The infamous Metal Archives were the first to go down. But also most of the Persian language metal forums and blogs got filtered. Even the official Metallica website had to bite the dust.

When The Guardian reported about the intensified censorship following the commotion after the 2009 elections, the newspaper wrote that "internet censorship is both routine and highly developed in the Islamic Republic." Iran uses what the OpenNet Initiative calls "one of the most extensive technical filtering systems in the world", as all internet providers are required to go through state-controlled gateways.
According to Wikipedia - who have a surprisingly thorough article about internet censorship in Iran - every ISP must be approved by both the Telecommunication Company of Iran (TCI) and the Ministry of Culture and Islamic Guidance, and must implement content-control software for websites and e-mail. ISP's face heavy penalties if they do not comply with the government filter lists.
In 2008, Iran has blocked access to more than five million Internet sites, whose content is mostly perceived as immoral and anti-social. In recent years, Internet service providers have been told to block access to political, human rights and women's sites and weblogs expressing dissent or deemed to be pornographic and anti-Islamic. The ban has also targeted such popular social networking sites as Facebook and YouTube, as well as news sites.

Written by BudDa on 07.07.2010 at 08:21 Don't generalize this to the islamic faith. There's always a difference between faith, religion and individuals who use either in their own interest. I wonder if that's only DNS bans like they tried to enforce on kiddie porn in Germany or if they really cut the routes in Iran. In the former case, you could think of making Metalstorm appear instead of Ivan's Design when the server gets requests from Iranian IPs with no domain in the header. But I do find it funny that the user who posted the screenshot obviously uses TOR to surf the internet. The surprising thing is that Iran doesn't ban it's use too. Otherwise the whole idea of internet censorship falls apart anyway.

We deserved it, i mean come on, we got bands like Bullet For My Valentine and As I Lay Dying coming onto the site, and Iran was just tired of all the false metal, so they decided to block it. I praise Iran for taking the necessary steps against all those that play false metal, they are the tr00-est of the tr00. I mean come on guys we have Unearth as a band here, Grand Ayatollah Ali Kamehameha is just tired of us straying from the tr00 metal. Written by BudDa on 07.07.2010 at 10:14 Obviously, even without having read it, the Qur'an doesn't say anything about Metal or the Internet. Faith is what each man has to his own. Religion is when people who share beliefs group together and organize. What the Iranian government does, however, is censorship, control, suppression, whatever you want to call it. Granted they use religion as a pretext. But what this is really about is keeping people ignorant. Preventing them from learning a critical way of thinking and developing a mind of their own. Pretty much what christianity has done to europe for >1500 years. Only in today's world the people aren't as simple-minded as in the middle ages. The internet gives them access to thoughts and culture of a relatively free and critical world. So any country trying to suppress it's people would start to try and censor it. Metal falls more in the category of alien culture than free thinking (even if some people here would claim otherwise), but it's not a new concept, even for people in the western world to condemn cultural development beyond individual understanding.
