Mine is the one of Fatal Tragedy (Dream Theater). It may not be Petrucci's best, but I love it because it begins quite powerful, then he plays some sort of different "extracts", and finally that amazing progression until the end of the song.

They are good solos, no doubt. One of my favourite solos are the two solos in "Surrounded" and "Take The Time", by the Dream Theater, both songs from Images of Words, but that's just a coincidence.

Definitely second Hetfield's solo in Nothing Else Matters. Most good ballads have great solos, they are actually one the rare moments where the shredder remembers he's a human being and not fretboard-jabbing robot.

I prefer melody and structure to speed and technique in solos.. Of course if you can mix both then that's even better.. therefore my favorite solo of all time is November Rain by Slash. There's actually three solos in that song. All of them are extremely brilliant. My favorite soloists from a metal band are the Ammot Brothers from Arch Enemy. Silverwing, Burning Angel, Bridge of Destiny (the outro), Dead Eyes See No Future are good examples. DragonForce have some pretty sweet solos but can never seem to get them right when they're playing live.

One more AWESOME solo I forgot about. Scorpions - Sails of Charon - the solo at the beginning of the song played by Uli Jon Roth. This solo slays almost anything. Check it out. The video is funny too.

When there's a solo i really like on a song i try to play on guitar, i'm more like "oh cool, so i'm playing rhythm guitar with Glenn Tipton/whoever doing all that awesome shit on the lead!" and thus i remembered JUDAS PRIEST - Beyond the Realms of Death which is probably the best solo he ever put out, it's got more hooks than a Slash solo(beating the technicality of Painkiller and Metal Meltdown)

The best solo atm the moment in my not humble opinion: !T.O.O.H.! - Kali THE solo... The way the guitar solo turns into a bass solo [one bass solo that actually kick the shit out of any guitar easily] and then into another guitarr solo that seems mor elike a riff instead. One of the most beautiful ends I've seen on a song [and also album]... I almost cry at the fact that Kali was the last song of their last album... Like a way to say good bye, giving all they had...

My favourite guitar solo is the one in Sonata Arctica's Black Sheep. It was my first solo I've heard and seen live (2 times). And it also sounds quite good and speedy enough.

I would say that one of my favorites would have to be from Where the Slime Live by Trey Azagthoth from Morbid Angel. Just before they are going into the solo is really powerful and then the solo comes and just leaves you floored and wanting more. Also any solo from Death is damn good in my opinion. Really well structured and laid out IMO.

The latest version of "Fields of Desolation" is IMO not only the best Arch Enemy solo but also maybe the best solo overall.

Not suggesting the rip-off scenario by any of the bands, but those are just similar solos.

After looking over some of the responces to provoke some thought, when it comes down to "favorite guitar solo" I have to say it's with Iron Maiden's "Powerslave" solo. Like it has that "Brilliance that just doesn't stop and when it does you feel totally satisfied with what you just heard" feeling to it. The writing of that sends me soaring every time and it's built amazingly. THey slow it down just the right way and then "POW!" they're off and flying. Other's that did come to mind for me were Death's guitar solo on "misanthropic" and Judas Priest's "Riding on the Wind" & "Ram it Down" really works for me too, but not nearly as much as "Powerslave" did.

A. my favorite solo is War Pigs- Black Sabbath, i know its "old" and not as fast nor complicated as new shit, but still its iommi back in the day, when sabbath was pure evil B. Spiders dosen't have a solo, it's just a faster riff. Daron Malakian dosent have a lot of solos, besides Psycho
