Now I for one am one of the newer fans of this unique progressive metal outfit. I was unaware of the Aurora Veil EP that came out in 2007, was already establishing a fan-base, and was building up significant hype for the release of Portal of I five years later. I have never even heard of Ne Obliviscaris, until right before the album was released, with the surrounding hype growing to a fever-pitch. I was finally able to order a copy from the band's label and after a few spins, I must say, I was quite impressed.

Reading other people's opinions is a funny thing. Before I checked it out myself, I was convinced Ne Obliviscaris would sound like a bastard child of meloblack-infused Wintersun and Into Eternity on drugs. And I'm not going to lie to you, there's definitely a bit of that in Portal Of I, but that's only a part of the picture.

I was introduced to this band by a friend of mine whose taste in metal was quite similar to mine; he showed me a video of "As Icicles Fall". This took my attention, and I decided to check these guys out; and I was very pleased with what I heard.

I liked it much more on the second listen. It did not feel disjointed to me so far and worked great as background music during some translating activities .

Regarding your whole "haters" discussion - can I do this, just this once?

Okay after a few more listens, I had to change my rating (unfortunately lower, but not much). I personally feel that there a few moments of drag here and there, however this is still a phenomenal release, with many incredible moments. This is amazing, especially for a debut release.

I need to give it another listen too. The one listen I didn't give my full attention, was busy doing other shit, maybe that's why I wasn't blown away by this.

I think they don't really keep it in that high regard as a release even though it received heaps of attention. They call it a demo and not an EP which kind of showcases that.

Hmmm, disagree. Google reviews for it. It's regarded by many as the best debut/demo/EP ever recorded.

Regardless, this is their full-length debut, which many consider to be a debut in general. EPs and demos are considered debut material, but they're only meant for showcase purposes a majority of the time, especially early on in a band's career before they're able to release a full-length.

Full-length debut? Of course. EPS and demos are debut material? Yes, and landmarks or they wouldn't be littered all over this website. Majority of the time? I think this is a rare exception how important this demo was looking at the popluarity of this new album.

I know that release like my own pockets mate The band really thinks it's "just a demo" and that the re-recorded versions are "miles better". You didn't even quote enough of my post

Well, what's the purpose of releasing a demo anyway? The band is definitely proud of the songs they've written but they feel the performance and production are a lot better on the re-recordings than on The Aurora Veil (the latter is stating the obvious really).

I see a lot of potential but I just can't seem to get into a lot of the songs. "And Plague Flowers..." and "As Icicles Fall" are absolute masterpieces. The rest of the songs I just can't seem to grasp. I think there is just too much instrumental for me, especially "Forget Not"... that song is seriously 8 minutes too long.

Overall it is a good album. There are definitely interesting ideas to listen to here, but I would rather say that this album has its moment than say that it is consistently good. In addition, it's too long for its own good. This is a band to watch out for in any case. I only hope they won't go into the ridiculous complexity territory, but rather focus on coherent structure.

Another reason why I'm disgusted with the Australian music industry.
Even though they don't sound like them, could these guys be the Australian answer to Opeth or Agalloch?

Haters gonna hate.

Probably the most annoying response people on the internet have come up with. I'm not a "hater" because I don't like the music. I don't "hate" the album, I have an opinion that differs from those who are praising it.

If history has taught us anything, it's that anyone who's opinions or ideals differ from your own deserve to die like the primitive savages they are.

I made a review of this album on Youtube, and the bassist Cygnus actually left this really nice message on there:

"you are a legend. such kind words leave me speachless! can't wait to meet you on tour one day brother.

cygnus - ne obliviscaris"

That means a lot actually.

Its a good first effort from this band, as people have said some parts get a bit too messy and overlong, but its unique and fresh at the same time.

"of the leaper butterflies, "forget not", and "as icicles fall" are the best.
