Akercocke, from UK.... Play a blackened form of Death Metal... I purchased 'Words that go unspoken...' and really liked it. However i standy by Chorozone as being their best album...

What does everyone else think of this band in general?

A great band and I saw then in London at the weekend. Always a good gig and they should be better known and they went down well in USA last time.

...And here I was thinking that I'd be the first to create an Akercocke thread! Damn you __Az__

Anyway. I concur -obviously. Perhaps the most important band to emerge within the metal scene since the likes of Opeth. Their latest album, however, has become my favorite of their work. They appear to have reached a neew plateau, if you will. The variation of sound and technique is just awe inspiring.

I don't own any of their albums or anything (I know, I'm working on it) but I've seen them live and they were and interesting band. I enjoyed their performance and I certainly do need to get my paws on one of their albums.

I've bought every album by Akercocke and haven't been disappointed. I keep on changing my mind on which one I like the best, but I think Chronzon exceeds the others.

I think that their new album is amazing. The vocals are fantastic and can change really easily from clean to death metal and then to black metal(which reminds me the vocals of Varg).I think that Choronzon was indeed better than Words...I hope that i will be able to see them live.

an excellent band indeed. my favorite black metal band from England along with Bal-Sagoth
maybe their last two albums are a bit more death metally - but when i think of them, i still think of black metal
'The Goat Of Mendez' is a very very good album 'Choronzon' starts the change of the sound - which came about because of the new label with more money. it is a fantastic album as is 'Words That Go Unspoken, Deeds That Go Undone' as well
definatly one of my favorite English bands

There are alot of fantastic bands from England that keeps amazing me over and over again, and Akercocke are no exception. Some years ago a friend of mine played the song A Skin For Dancing In from The Goat Of Mendes album, and it just blew me away, I literally dropped my jaw in amazement and went out to buy all their albums. I love everything about them, the way they express their satanic image, their black suits and their love for women, a funny combination but it works perfectly! I think all their albums are really good, and they got better with time. I must say that my personal favourite is Words That Go Unspoken, Deeds That Go Undone and let me tell you why. Mendonca's vocals are just flawless on this album, best vocals he has brought out so far, thats for sure, its amazing he can sound so different. I know its a leap from clean vocals to harsh, but this guy comes close to Mikael Åkerfeldt, and no im not joking, he really is incredible. Its not only the vocals that I like on Deeds, but the production as well, I love it, it fits Akercocke's sound really good, not raw nor crystal clear, but somewhere in between, just perfect. But! The best thing about Deeds is difinitely to hear how much these guys changed their sound, I mean come on, everybody can here it, this album is a pure progressive metal journey with black and death metal influences that would make even Sigh envious as hell! I like the direction they are going and I just cant wait to get my hands on their next album, hail fucking Akerocke.

I bought the newest album after reading a positive review in Terrorizer magazine, and was very impressed. Got Rape of the Bastard Nazerene and Chorozon from ebay, had a listen, but they just didn't have the same effect onb me as Words... I should listen to them again sometime

I really liked Akercocke before, but since I saw them on Graspop I like them much more! This is an amazing band, which brings black and death together the best IMO. Really technical as well and great songs. Gorgeous band!

Amazing band, one of my favs...'Rape of the Bastard Nazarene' and 'The Goat of Mendes are brutal pieces of work. 'Choronzon' and the most recent opus 'Words That Go Unspoken, Deeds That Go Undone' have taken the collective to a whole new perspective, textured tones yet still retaining that vicious attack.

Akercocke are awesome. They remind me slightly of Opeth at times. but really are in a field of their own. I heard they kick ass live and have a wierd thing about wearing buisnuess suits on stage. I have to see them live. Awesome album art on Chronozon.

Well, since my last post I've certainly accumalated more albums and seen them live one more time. They really are good. A lot of UK'ers really talk shit about them but they're pretty unique. Prog death/blacl but not like those others in the genre. They're not like some Opeth or (later) Enslaved rip off. Favourite album....hm...I enjoy 'Goat Of Mendes' a lot currently but that could easily change or something.

yeah, it's really hard to decide which of their albums is the best. For the longest time I couldn't decide between their last three, but overall I think that Words That Go Unspoken, Deeds That Go Undone is my favorite.

Oh, and your damn lucky to be able to see them live. I don't ever remember them coming to the USA

Can someone tell me the stylistic differences between their albums?

well 'Choronzon' and 'Words That Go Unspoken, Deeds That Go Undone' have pretty much the same style which people seem to call 'blackened death metal' or whatever
but their first two albums 'Rape Of The Bastard Nazarene' and 'The Goat Of Mendes' are a lot more black metal, although they do still try and incorporate different sounds and make it a bit different
their sound only changed with 'Choronzon' so much because they finally got a bigger label that allowed them to go out and find all this funny instruments they couldnt use before

So as someone that doesn't like black metal (other than melodic black)...I shouldn't bother with the earlier 2?

it isnt black metal in the same way that Mayhem or Burzum is black metal, it is kinda different from them and a lot better in my opinion

cant say how i love this band. this band works similar to opeth. you can listen to every single album countless and you still find something more. awesome atmospheric melodical riffs, brutal parts are extremely catchy, variety of vocals...and so on and so on. plus: man how i love david grays drumming. that level of variation he puts into his drumming patterns is one of the best in metal if no THE best .

ive read through akercocke history that david gray put on their website and found: "Jason and I had decided to pursue the Faust theme reflected in our name ( being a capuchin monkey from Robert Nye's version of the Faust mythos ) further and we intended to write a song for each of the words that AKERCOCKE the monkey had inexplicably learnt to speak."
