When a trailblazing monster of a cult act turns into a '70s prog tribute band, there's surely going to be some backlash. Opeth have been getting loads of backlash (deserved and not) since 2011's Heritage. I have no doubt that Sorceress will be met by many with at least the same amount of hostility. I think with Pale Communion they really came into their own in their new direction, Heritage was a bit of a failed experiment imo. Hopefully this will be another step forward! EDIT: Seems like I just completely copied Ace Frawley's sentiment...

Ratings are falsified by some random newbies just in love with harsher sounds! My favorite Opeth album is still BWP, but I do love their new albums too because they're still good! I'm not scared to say if one of favorite bands are not doing a good job, but that's not the case with Opeth!

Never did I once make mention that they were trying to ever replicate what they did on any of their previous albums. Unfortunately they have recently tapped into making Prog Rock and Mike says it make them unique for doing so  I get it, their 'new' direction has a lot of people raving about their sound and it must be a total blessing to be tone deaf but a lot of their fans aren't easily fooled and aren't going to fall in line and accept this 'new' direction as being unique or innovative. If this is the route they're going to stay on then RIP

I don't like it either, but I can recognize it's very good, this last two records, as well as Damnation was back in 2003. Stop "bitching" like "Opeth just does shit now", waiting for their old register to come. It won't happen easily. But it's not impossible. Be'lakor, Omnium Gatherum are two bands making Progressive Melodeath better than some of nordic 90's bands like Opeth. Open your mind and deal with it. I would prefer a Still Life or Blackwater Park v2 but, let's accept what they really like to do. Matbe this record is more agressive

It's a joke dude and it clearly has an appeal with mainstream fans who would never go back and listen to their earlier offerings do to the fact that it has 'Harsh vocals'. Doesn't that sound like someone who would lean more towards mainstream music? Isn't that a respond you would get from someone who listen to mainstream music? A good chunk of the time i'm on their FB page and that is all you will see. Just fanboys defending them blindly and willfully ignorant. Ask them if they have ever listened to Still Life or BWP and they will give you that same answer, "I dont like death metal vocals' .... What a laugh

While harsh vocals doesnt equal good music (Duh!), I must agree, with most people here, that last two albums weren´t that enjoyable for me as previous ones. It is still good piece of music, but I am in my middle twenties (same age as Akerfeldt when he made BWP), so it is kinda logical. It is very possible, that when i turn 40 I start preffering Heritage and PC over the Mayh and Still Life. I am still looking forward to the Sorceress, because I like the witch-demon-whatever-like atmosphere, that Akerfeldt can create and I hope to find this in his upcoming album.

Funny how some seem to expect a band to be able to recreate a particular sound instantly. Some things only last for the moment, I mean shit, I'll take old Opeth over new any day, but be realistic for fuck's sake. Mikael is not going to magically shift his mental states back to what he was doing 15 years ago just because fans are foaming at the mouth for Blackwater Park 2.0
