I am not going to hide my bias. Alexander Von Meilenwald is a crafter of some of the finest blackened doom metal on the planet, and I am most definitely a fanboy for The Ruins Of Beverast. Having been somewhat disappointed, however, with the project's previous Blood Vaults effort, I went into 2017's Exuvia with some pretty high hopes of the music redeeming itself. And by the grace of Nyarlathotep, those hopes have been met.

Finally an album deserving of being #1. Knowing this site though it probably won't even stay in the top 20 long.

Yeah it's either gonna get downvoted eventually or some mediocre mainstream album's gonna come along and get a lot more fellating with 9s and 10s and knock this off its throne

Probably my favorite record of the year right here, though admittedly, I haven't been keeping up with new music as much as I'd like. The second track is a damn masterpiece.

There are two things I'm sure of right now: This is better than Blood Vaults and The Pythia's Pale Wolves might be one of my favorite songs by him ever.

If you're wondering: Exuvia means "things left behind" (typically clothes/armour/weapons, but can also be hair, fingernails, etc.)

The whole album is great, pity it's always so short.

Not sure I'd call a ~70 minute album short

70 minutes is like regular for this sort of works, I find it to be a bit short, yes. In any case, I've rated the album 9, I'm pretty sure it will be one of the best if not the best of 2017 black metal wise.

Bad English
Tage Westerlund
Just listened, I know this will be nominated in MS avards, just I know it , because Che likes it a lot and its not traditional BM, if ppl like old school letter, hair and chains, and BM agresin and pyro mania, forgot this, this is a bit slower, influences, some prog, elements a bit equal as Enslaved in last years but more variation of sound. Good album

I love this as much as Foulest Semen but not as much as Unlock the Shrine. Monstrous album and a great come back to form; not saying that Blood Vaults was in any way bad, but it was definitely not on par with his other work.

How can a generic as fuck album (Gods of Violence) be #1 and an album that is actually pretty original (this) be on its way out of the top 20?

China was a neat
Really love that opening title track, spun it more than 5 times today. Reminds me of that signature TRoB sound eventhough I can't even pinpoint what it is. Glad to see Melienwald bringing a fresh and solid songwriting to the table after the slightly disappointing Blood Vaults. Gonna be spinning this album heavily in the coming days.

This album gives me a really hard time and the main problem is the titanic title-track placed as opener: after that, everything else seems almost unnecessary - it obviously isn't, but that opener is so overwhelming and I feel devastated and exhausted and somehow cleansed, I hardly can get past. Holy shit.

Bumped the vote to a 9. Yeah it's still not really like the first three albums, but... I think the difference is more just in terms of songwriting technique than actual quality, honestly. This thing is GOOD, especially so because although Von Meilenwald's certainly flirted with atmosphere with ROB before, he's never really done it in this way. It adds a whole new dimension to the music, feel like I discover something new here with each listen.

GODDAMN, I am excited for this shit in full at Roadburn.

Surtur Barbaar Maritime, what a song...

I don't like much comparing albums by a band that has all strong releases but I have the feeling when listening to this that it might be the most "complete" TRoB album. Not necessarily the best, I'd have a hard time time picking one, but it has all the TRoB elements and some sort of more "enveloping" sound, or maybe more mature, or whatever. Difficult to explain. Suffice to say, can't get enough from Von Meilenwald!

This guy is obviously judged differently than other bands. Even if its impossible - imagine if someone else had done this.
Someone should try to figure out the derivatas for rating TROB. If I give a 8 to TROB its like a strong 10 for any other band. A 9 means like 11.5, so even if I rated this with a 9 it means 11.5.

His albums still exist in the sphere of all music releases so the rating is still being compared to previous albums as well as anything that might be similar sounding. I think any fanboy of a band might think their most favoured artists are judged differently to others, but arbitrarily giving them higher universal scores still sounds a bit silly. It's not something you can "figure out" because there's no objective metric in which to do so. It's just fanboy inflation all the same Besides, there's rarely a better way of gauging an artist than against their previous works, and while this is a great record he's done better so giving them all flat 10s because you might think it's still better than something that might sound similar isn't very useful in a 10/10 system.

Most music exists in a sphere where its possible to compare it to the previous and the past. TROB exists in a sphere where it is being compared to the future. And as you cant compare things with what hasnt been done TROB exists in a sphere of its own forthcoming.
