Doc's Obligatory Top 100 Of The Past Decade

Written by: Doc Godin
Published: 28.01.2010
So I was out on my front porch having a cigarette and reading (which is when I do most of my incredibly genius & profound thinking that you can see displayed in my writing), considering how I'm going to go about blogging my top 100 of the past decade. I considered the fact that there will probably be considerably more bitching than there will be positive responses, then I thought about Texas Hold 'Em Poker. Now, poker may seem completely irrelevant here, but there is some correlation, let me explain: Most people who have played poker enough in their life begin to form a signature playing style, I'm very aggressive in my poker playing, I either win extremely fast, or lose hard and fast (usually the latter). What many people don't realize is that the way a person plays poker is generally a good sign of how they live their life - either safe, with no big losses but no quick wins, or people like myself who are the all or nothing types. So how does that tie into my top 100? Well, I figured I could either try and please as many people as possible in how I approach presenting this thing (while still pissing off a handful of people), or I can try to win the award for inciting the most bitching. So here goes...

First, lets take a look at the similar blog postings of the unfortunate people that have to work with me:

Marcel? He's old, old people can't do anything right.
Bas? Well, judging by the way he plays Magic The Gathering, and the fact that he put Ayreon at #1 on his list is a surefire sign that he took the short bus to school as a child, and is severely lacking in the manliness department.
BitterCOld? He put far too much stoner metal in his list, therefore he is probably a stoner, stoners are always hippies. As a self-proclaimed, full-time hippie killer by trade, it would be a conflict of interest if I was to agree with anything this unshowered, long-haired, pompous bum says.
Jupitreas? Suffers from chronic masturbation, 'nuff said.
Lucas? Do I honestly need to explain this one?

Among my justified bashing of everyone else's lame ass blogs, it seems I have forgotten one "special" (special with air-finger quotations) loser. When in fact I have not forgotten him at all, I just found it unnecessary seeing as no one takes this man seriously anyways, so here's your plug Darkside:
Darkside Momo's Sorry Excuse For A "Best Of" List

You know when you're at a party and that one guy no one wanted there shows up, and everyone collectively lets out that long sigh while whispering "ah fuck" under their breath? Yeah, the entire staff makes that sound every time Darkside posts a blog.

Anyways, regarding my list. I first got into metal roughly 6 years ago, in that time it's helped completely destroy my life, this is basically the sound track of that path of self-destruction. While some albums on this list may conflict with my album votes or even some of my reviews, they at one time or another were some of my favourites over the past 6 years - so out of respect to my younger self, I included them here. Also, many of you may consider this my "opinion", when in fact it is actual truth, this is the best list regarding the past decade you will ever read.

BitterCOld? He put far too much stoner metal in his list, therefore he is probably a stoner, stoners are always hippies. As a self-proclaimed, full-time hippie killer by trade, it would be a conflict of interest if I was to agree with anything this unshowered, long-haired, pompous bum says.

lol. i shower. i have military-short hair, came to metal via punk, and, oh, the album Hippie Killer actually made my list.

but yeah, there is a lot of stoner/sludge on my list. because it's good stuff. too each their own, glam-loving wet-behind-the-ears canuck.
Dangerboner - 17.12.2009 at 07:11
I really need to check out Sahg II. I didn't see the debut in your list, an album I considered a masterpiece after only a couple of listens

Couldn't really tell you whether or not it's better. I really enjoyed Sahg II, but didn't really look into the debut too closely, and this list is only stuff I've heard/got into...obviously.

Actually, I only counted 7 glam albums on my list, there are a few others that could be arguably glam (ie Alice Cooper, WASP)...even I'm a little surprised at the lack of glam included in my list.

Even before reading this blog I knew that Inferno was in the first place. it's indeed a very good album by Motörhead. Glad to see Ahab in the best 10, Hope you will get into more doom as well!

I totally disagree with Keep Of Kalessin and Swallow The Cum... And well, most of the alums are indeed good but not my style at all. And Reise, Reise is quite meh... Mutter or the newest one beat Reise, Reise easily.

Nice to see Amesoeurs there, ripp-off or not I still found their music amazing.

Yeah, I don't listen to Reise Reise (or all that much Rammstein for that matter) anymore. I used to listen to it quite a lot a few years ago, so it was quite important in my personal metal evolution.

As for Inferno - that is THE album for me. If it wasn't for that album I probably wouldn't be listening to metal today.

As for Ahab & doom - well, I somehow doubt I'll get that deeply into doom. I've been searching for something that would hit me as hard as Ahab did, and aside from Monolithe, I haven't really found anything. I was tempted to throw a Monolithe release in there, but I haven't listened to them nearly enough, though I would like to.

I just like Keep Of Kalessin because the lead singer is a dreamboat they have some great riffs.

So do I, especially since KoK have released far suprior works this decade to those two.
As for StS thank God he mentioned this one (which is still enjoyabel) and not any of their newer works.

EDIT: actually only KoK's Reclaim ep if from this decade, but then again that is by far their best.

Aye, the Reclaim EP is very good, but I'm not a big fan of Atilla, he's ok, but just not my thing. I found most of their other releases to be decent but sort of generic black metal. As a whole I don't mind the first 2 albums, but "I Deny" from Agnen - A Journey Through The Dark is the only song that consistently pulls me in.

The latest Esoteric is a doomer's wet dream... But it's a very difficult album to digest but you should listen to it anyway.

Hahahahahahahaha, those are pretty much the thoughts I had while I was reading his list [sorry Bas... but it's true]
I loved the bus part because today I was waiting 25 fucking minutes in -5 C [around 23 F] for the first bus [because I take two...]. Pure brutality right in the morning.

Yeah, Esoteric is one I keep getting recommended, and I really want to check out as soon as I get some cash to spend on albums. Doom is one of those genres where I need to listen to an entire album to judge whether the band is for me or not. Luckily seeing Ahab live really sold me on them, Monolithe have an incredible atmosphere, but Esoteric I've only heard a few clips, nothing in length...but with the amount of recommendations I've been receiving for them they seem like a safe bet.

98. Iced Earth - The Glorious Burden

Come on, the worst Iced Earth album of the decade? Completely unispired an boring! Except, of course, the Gettysburg trilogy which is really a gem. And so fucking emotional.
