Disclaimer: The rating is very low but don't take my word for granted. Try a few songs of this album and make your own opinion because there are some interesting ideas in there. This is a very strange, very special band.

Yes, this is a strange band? When I first got the full-length of this Italian band in my hands, I knew this was a metalcore album, only by the name. I expected it to be just another run-of-the-mill metalcore release, but it definitely is not the case. Still, I have very mixed feelings about this Destruction Technique?

Bad things first: the production is absolutely horrible. It sounds like a bad demo recorded with a tape recorder toy. You hardly distinguish anything in all this mud and the vocals just sound unmixed. The classical metalcore parts are bland, déjà-vu (lots of Soulfly influences), uninteresting, painful, boring, tedious, poorly-written. On these the band sounds like a group of friends who put up a band just for fun. They are so bad that every time I listen to this album my fingers hover over the stop button after three songs.
The band have also used female vocals on '11'. Well just stop, or next time please get a good singer, not the girl next door. She's terrible. What else? Oh yeah, there's that lousy cover of 'Hasta Siempre Commandante Che Guevara'. This is a good idea but in the end it plainly sucks (and I'm not the kind of person who usually uses this expression). In other words, most of this album is extremely bad.

Yet there is a little sparkle of hope. Actually this band is innovative. Every song has the odd passage that would sound out of place if it wasn't brilliantly done. Whenlovefinishes use a shitload of non-metal elements and merge it all with their hardcorish riffs. And surprise, those parts generally sound very good. You get ethnic/tribal percussions, ambient and atmospheric samples, industrial noises and techno-influenced riffs among other weird things. Not everything works perfectly well but there are enough good ideas to make the album sometimes interesting. The only part I disliked was the scratches on 'Nails Against The Wall' because they sound like a badly-shut off tap (you know, that annoying 'plop? plop').

So all in all I'm a bit confused by this album. The pure metalcore parts would get them a rating of 1. But those unusual elements would be worth at least a 7. Unfortunately, most of this album is so lousy that the positive sides don't make up for all the negative moments in my opinion. Still, if you're bored with 'normal' metalcore acts and look for a band that is not afraid to innovate, I can only advise you to try Whenlovefinishes and make your own opinion.
