Thumbs up: +4
This is a list, that will be updated very gradually, with album covers that I find very appealing for one reason or another. It is emphasized in the title because I also have a list of cover songs.

The criteria for these is that they really have to grab me in some way, invoke an interesting emotion or feeling, have pleasing visual aesthetics, etc. It'll start small because I'm only including covers that really sink in.

1. Ghost - Opus Eponymous
This one is a real gem. Absolutely perfect with respect to the style of music Ghost plays. The church at the bottom is particularly notable as a source of a lot of the style and intrigue this cover provokes for me. It has a dark and gothic feel to it, while maintaining a lighter and more simple vibe. To me, this is a parallel with how the singing in the actual music is, whether it was intended or not. The lighter singing style provides a strange yet fitting contrast to the dark and occult lyrical content. When all is said and done this album cover is visually striking yet mysterious, and relevant to the music. Brilliant work.
2. Update: Hell no am I changing it to "B.C.", the pictures are tiny anyways and fuuuuuuck that shit.
3. Sulphur Aeon - Swallowed By The Ocean's Tide
Good lord, this is unbelievable artwork. I don't even care what the theme is, when there is that much beautiful detail packed into an underwater scene, it is hard not to like. Some expertly executed stuff.
4. Sodom - In War and Pieces
When I purchased this album, I had seen it in the store and wasn't aware Sodom even had a new album out. I bought it trusting in 2 things; listening to the band's other material, and that sexy, sexy album art. It's awesome, and fits the vibe of Sodom's music perfectly. The detail is very intricate and the flaming maelstrom depicted on this cover is both appropriate for the album, and just damn cool to look at. Top that off with with the chainsaw and tank imagery, and you've got some badass but still very professional artwork. It looks crazier than Gary Busey's character in Lethal Weapon.
5. Srodek - Förfall
Now I haven't listened to this none, but the album artwork really caught my eye back when Troy reviewed it. Based on his review the music isn't anything to write home about, but I found myself drawn to this artwork. It employs the typical black metal "dark forest" imagery but there's something about that dilapidated shack, or hut, or whatever it is, that made it quite powerful. Considering the depressive mood of such black metal, this image seemed fitting and just so bleak. It's a little hard to describe why but this artwork really grabbed me, and I would say it was very well done.
6. Darkthrone - F.O.A.D.
Here's another one I have yet to listen to extensively. But it doesn't matter. The message here couldn't be any clearer. Spiky ass skeleton man is telling you to go fuck off and points you right where he wants you to be. 6 feet underground. This cover has attitude, this cover has style, and of course, it is just cool as hell. Really good stuff.
7. Warbringer - Waking Into Nightmares
Sets the scene perfectly for the album. Surprisingly detailed desert scene with some really badass rock formations which also work as a device to lead the eye to the towering spire in the center.... Just awesome stuff.
8. Slayer - Reign in Blood
Not only is this my favourite album of all time, but the album artwork is just as impressive as the music. Reign in Blood is horror and darkness. This cover has some ever so appropriate distorted and crazy shit going on that suits the album perfectly. There's heads rolling around in blood, there's messed up bodies hanging all over the place, and then the goat king himself being carried around by some twisted and creepy looking dudes. You can almost hear "you await the final CAAAAAAAAAAAAALLLLLLLLL" right when you look at it. This album Reigns in Blood above them all, in basically every way.
9. Municipal Waste - The Fatal Feast
This one got my attention right away - and for all the right reasons. It has everything you could possibly want in an album cover; space zombies eating body parts, a campy vibe, and Municipal Waste's awesome logo. To me, it's all in the name of fun, and what other choice of cover art could you want from a band like this? (The album is pretty good too).
10. Mountain - Climbing!
Mountain was recently added to the site, and despite not really being a metal group and more of an influence to metal, I'm glad they are on here. "Climbing!" has artwork that has always gotten a somewhat unexplainable feeling out of me. Part of this has to do with the album itself. Sadly, Felix Pappalardi is no longer with us, and I really think he was taken away too early, but the great thing about music is that it captures and era in someone's life and allows them to put their own mark on things. His bass work on this album is unbelievable, and in any music I've heard some of my favourite. It's smooth, and it hits me in all the right places. It just has that sound to it. The same thing goes for the artwork of the album. It's colourful and vibrant, but it all seems to work so well, and the music on the album gives me that reminder of the past. It invokes an emotional response for me, makes me think back to a different time. I wasn't alive in the 70's but the response I get from this artwork somehow reaches outside the boundaries of just Mountain for me, and has a lot of meaning... And one lame, vague, explanation later, we get to the point - I love this album cover.
11. Mercyful Fate - Don't Break The Oath
This cover is rather iconic and for good reason. Simple, to the point, very strong colour scheme, looks straight up cool as hell (pun intended). Classic, and not only is the art great, the album is too.
12. Cynic - Focus
Cynic is a really great band. I guess ethereal or cosmic would be a couple words to describe their music. It is a very interesting blend of death, metal, jazzy elements, prog elements. The artwork for Focus (their best work IMO) is also quite interesting. It looks like some kind of cocoon or ethereal being, like something from another dimension. I find it quite evocative, just like their music.

Look forward to seeing what other album covers you select. I just created a list of my favourite ten album covers. I did contemplate including the Ghost album Opus Eponymous but it just didn't make my top ten. A very cool album cover, I agree.

Thanks The reason it'll be a slow process is because not very many really sink in as much as ones like these, but I'm sure I'll find more.

Cool idea. My favourite album cover of all time is High On Fire's Death Is This Communion. Oddly enough, it's also been my favourite album on and off over the past few years.

Thanks I checked it out, Death Is This Communion has a cool cover and it actually made me think of another one to add to the list that really got me when I first saw it.

I think I'm gonna throw my favourite album's cover on there as well
Mr. Doctor - 21.04.2012 at 00:36
Probably my favorite cover at the moment is The Maniacal Vale... It's so... immense. Completely represents the music with it's fiery atmosphere.

Probably 'Kénôse' for me. I'm sure if I overthought it I could find others I liked more though. It's a bitch to find a decent picture of it though as they almost always get the colours wrong or miss out details.

Oh yeah, Agoraphobic Nosebleed's 'PCP Torpedo' reissue has immense artwork, as does Sunn O)))'s 'Black One' and The Axis of Perdition's 'Urfe'

[EDIT]

What the hell, sounds like a good excuse to hijack this list with my own one I did a while ago

100 Favourite Cover Arts

I still think Love's burial ground is fucking ugly. Doesn't have any redeeming qualities at all.

I like Kenose but I still have no clue what it is.

Seems pretty clear to me that they're hearts, especially when you consider the contents of the artbook that comes with it.

That Ghost album cover is SHIT no matter if you look at it subjectively or objectively

I don't own the cd and I haven't see any other artwork. It always maked me think of resin. But I see where are you coming from with the heart thing.

The art booklet has a kind of abstract grotesque thing of the body going on. It's very cool, a nice package in general.

Oh yeah, I do remember some of that stuff from a youtube video. Cool shizzle... I'm still sad that I just own SMR,C.

Gotta fix that. Sadly, I promised myself to stay away from buying anything until I'm done with everything I own that I haven't heard/seen yet so it will take a while.

That doesn't even make sense. Isn't the whole idea of looking at something subjectively, like in basically every list on here, that it's a person's opinion? In my opinion it's unreal.

The fact he was able to go into such detailed description about what makes it a gem for him would suggest - subjectively - not everyone finds it to be shit.
