This is a list, that will be updated very gradually, with album covers that I find very appealing for one reason or another. It is emphasized in the title because I also have a list of cover songs.

1. Suffocation - Effigy of the Forgotten
A Dan Seagrave classic. Immaculate detail and dark atmosphere. Doesn't get much better.
2. Sepultura - Schizophrenia
I really like the colour palette on this one. The blue and the red are just very rich. The shattering effect and even the effect on the album's title lettering are very cool too. Kind of a very surreal vibe to it.
3. Ghost - Opus Eponymous
This one is a real gem. Absolutely perfect with respect to the style of music Ghost plays. The church at the bottom is particularly notable as a source of a lot of the style and intrigue this cover provokes for me. It has a dark and gothic feel to it, while maintaining a lighter and more simple vibe. To me, this is a parallel with how the singing in the actual music is, whether it was intended or not. The lighter singing style provides a strange yet fitting contrast to the dark and occult lyrical content. When all is said and done this album cover is visually striking yet mysterious, and relevant to the music. Brilliant work.
4. Sulphur Aeon - Swallowed By The Ocean's Tide
Good lord, this is unbelievable artwork. I don't even care what the theme is, when there is that much beautiful detail packed into an underwater scene, it is hard not to like. Some expertly executed stuff.
5. Sodom - In War and Pieces
When I purchased this album, I had seen it in the store and wasn't aware Sodom even had a new album out. I bought it trusting in 2 things; listening to the band's other material, and that sexy, sexy album art. It's awesome, and fits the vibe of Sodom's music perfectly. The detail is very intricate and the flaming maelstrom depicted on this cover is both appropriate for the album, and just damn cool to look at. Top that off with with the chainsaw and tank imagery, and you've got some badass but still very professional artwork.
6. Praying Mantis - Time Tells No Lies
I get an old school science fiction vibe from this one. There isn't anything particularly groundbreaking about it but I really like the details on the praying mantis, in the background landscape and the skull in the top corner. The colour palette doesn't hurt either, some very interesting and vibrant colours on it.
7. Srodek - Förfall
Now I haven't listened to this none, but the album artwork really caught my eye back when Troy reviewed it. Based on his review the music isn't anything to write home about, but I found myself drawn to this artwork. It employs the typical black metal "dark forest" imagery but there's something about that dilapidated shack, or hut, or whatever it is, that made it quite powerful. Considering the depressive mood of such black metal, this image seemed fitting and just so bleak. It's a little hard to describe why but this artwork really grabbed me, and I would say it was very well done.
8. Darkthrone - F.O.A.D.
Here's another one I have yet to listen to extensively. But it doesn't matter. The message here couldn't be any clearer. Spiky ass skeleton man is telling you to go fuck off and points you to the unfilled grave. This cover has attitude, this cover has style, and of course, it is just cool as hell. Really good stuff.
9. Vektor - Black Future
Monochromatic sci-fi goodness... I consider Black Future to be one of the best thrash albums out there, and the artwork is on par with the music. Super detailed but also stylized in a way that gives off a very unique vibe.
10. Destruction - Release From Agony
This one is more subject matter based... It has a surreal and striking visual quality that I appreciate a lot. I have always thought Destruction have a pretty cool logo as well, albeit not too groundbreaking as far as thrash goes.
11. Absu - The Sun of Tiphareth
One that I just find really cool. As simple as this one seems, I find it somewhat mysterious as well. The background contributes to that in some ways, the red area of the sky especially. And of course, hard to argue with swords and spikes like that.
12. Amorphis - Tales from the Thousand Lakes
The main thing I like about this one is the various layers. The waterfall and anchor obviously caught my eye at first and that part of the scene is nice enough, but there's also some interesting scenery to explore and an eerie sky and moon behind that. Also interesting in that for a death metal album (melodic or not) it's a pretty calm scene. Nice stuff.
13. Astra (USA) - The Weirding
The hazy, cloudy artwork here is a perfect companion for the music on the album. Very surreal and stylized artwork, which looks great to me.
14. Astra (USA) - The Black Chord
Similarly to the artwork of The Weirding, this one sets the scene perfectly for the music on the album. It's not particularly subject-matter heavy, but the spacey cosmic feeling to it is a perfect accompaniment to the spacey immersion into one of the best albums of all time.
15. Lord Mantis - Pervertor
This is an album that I haven't listened to, and likely won't, but that doesn't stop the album artwork from being good. It's just creepy and weird and looking at it makes me think of wriggling slimy grossness. Word on the street is that the music itself is pretty filthy too.
16. Warbringer - Waking Into Nightmares
Sets the scene perfectly for the album. Surprisingly detailed desert scene with some really badass rock formations which also work as a device to lead the eye to the towering spire in the center.... Just awesome stuff.
17. Slayer - Reign in Blood
Not only is this my favourite album of all time, but the album artwork is just as impressive as the music. Reign in Blood is horror and darkness. This cover has some ever so appropriate distorted and crazy shit going on that suits the album perfectly. There's heads rolling around in blood, there's messed up bodies hanging all over the place, and then the goat king himself being carried around by some twisted and creepy looking dudes. You can almost hear "you await the final CAAAAAAAAAAAAALLLLLLLLL" right when you look at it. This album Reigns in Blood above them all, in basically every way.
18. In Flames - The Jester Race
First of all, this album art features my favourite logo of the band's, which isn't seen on the other studio albums. Aside from that, the foreboding effect of the sky and huge castle type thing in the middle just create an interesting atmosphere and visual effect. I like the use of perspective as well.
19. Dismember - Like An Ever Flowing Stream
Doesn't need explaining.
20. Rhapsody Of Fire - Symphony of Enchanted Lands II - The Dark Secret
If there's one thing people hate, it's power metal album artwork. Not me though, I could stare at this beautiful work all day long. Sure, dragons and green valleys have been done before, but Rhapsody of Fire album art is probably the best place I could think of for all the cheesy goodness.
21. Orphaned Land - Mabool
So Orphaned Land is from some desert-y place I think, and this album's art mirrors that pretty well... Despite there not being any clear subject matter I like the texture of it and the fact that it still manages to capture a somewhat grandiose feeling.
22. Municipal Waste - The Fatal Feast
This one got my attention right away - and for all the right reasons. It has everything you could possibly want in an album cover; space zombies eating body parts, a campy vibe, and Municipal Waste's awesome logo. To me, it's all in the name of fun, and what other choice of cover art could you want from a band like this? (The album is pretty good too).
23. Borknagar - Borknagar
There is something very simple yet very foreboding about this one that I really like. Even the colours of it, they are all just a little bit strange and a little bit evocative. It's not alone in employing this kind of effect out of album artwork, but I still really like the vibe.
24. Mountain - Climbing!
There was previously a pretty long rambling speech here about why I love this artwork so much, but at the end of the day, it just makes me think and wonder of a different time, and the album makes me appreciate some things about what different people brought to the world.
25. Mercyful Fate - Don't Break The Oath
This cover is rather iconic and for good reason. Simple, to the point, very strong colour scheme, looks straight up cool as hell (pun intended). Classic, and not only is the art great, the album is too.
26. Cynic - Focus
Cynic is a really great band. I guess ethereal or cosmic would be a couple words to describe their music. It is a very interesting blend of death, metal, jazzy elements, prog elements. The artwork for Focus (their best work IMO) is also quite interesting. It looks like some kind of cocoon or ethereal being, like something from another dimension. I find it quite evocative, just like their music.
27. Marduk - Panzer Division Marduk
Panzer Division Marduk is one of those albums I would use to describe the polar opposite of "thinking man's music", and that's part of why I like this one... It just doesn't give a fuck. The music and the art just get right up in your face. I find it to be a somewhat iconic cover and even album out of black metal too.
28. Wehrmacht - Shark Attack
Somewhat of a legendary album, with artwork that I totally love. It has a definite DIY look to it but still infused a lot of the band's personality into it. And sharks being as cool as they are certainly doesn't hurt...

Look forward to seeing what other album covers you select. I just created a list of my favourite ten album covers. I did contemplate including the Ghost album Opus Eponymous but it just didn't make my top ten. A very cool album cover, I agree.

Thanks The reason it'll be a slow process is because not very many really sink in as much as ones like these, but I'm sure I'll find more.

Cool idea. My favourite album cover of all time is High On Fire's Death Is This Communion. Oddly enough, it's also been my favourite album on and off over the past few years.

Thanks I checked it out, Death Is This Communion has a cool cover and it actually made me think of another one to add to the list that really got me when I first saw it.

I think I'm gonna throw my favourite album's cover on there as well
Mr. Doctor - 21.04.2012 at 00:36
Probably my favorite cover at the moment is The Maniacal Vale... It's so... immense. Completely represents the music with it's fiery atmosphere.
!J.O.O.E.! - 21.04.2012 at 00:51
Probably 'Kénôse' for me. I'm sure if I overthought it I could find others I liked more though. It's a bitch to find a decent picture of it though as they almost always get the colours wrong or miss out details.

Oh yeah, Agoraphobic Nosebleed's 'PCP Torpedo' reissue has immense artwork, as does Sunn O)))'s 'Black One' and The Axis of Perdition's 'Urfe'

[EDIT]

What the hell, sounds like a good excuse to hijack this list with my own one I did a while ago

I still think Love's burial ground is fucking ugly. Doesn't have any redeeming qualities at all.

I like Kenose but I still have no clue what it is.

The art booklet has a kind of abstract grotesque thing of the body going on. It's very cool, a nice package in general.

Oh yeah, I do remember some of that stuff from a youtube video. Cool shizzle... I'm still sad that I just own SMR,C.

Gotta fix that. Sadly, I promised myself to stay away from buying anything until I'm done with everything I own that I haven't heard/seen yet so it will take a while.

That doesn't even make sense. Isn't the whole idea of looking at something subjectively, like in basically every list on here, that it's a person's opinion? In my opinion it's unreal.

The fact he was able to go into such detailed description about what makes it a gem for him would suggest - subjectively - not everyone finds it to be shit.

Argh. 80% of the covers in that list made me cringe. I'm really sorry, we do not have the same tastes in this department I guess . I don't care how iconic in metal, how detailed, how deep, or how recognizable the cover is, it doesn't make something which looks hideous as well as transgresses every rule of design without offering a new take on them, look any better.

Yeah, I guess we have different tastes, that's okay. Even though I have learned plenty about the rules of art and design in school when it comes to looking at something I sort of ignore thinking about that stuff and just go with the gut feeling.

I'm gonna update this too, it's way too small at the moment. There's a lot more I could add. Maybe you will like some of my new additions

Yeah I didn't realise it was such an old list until I started complaining . I thought you were going to give me an artgasm.
About the rules bit, as I said, transgress them all you like, just bring something interesting to plate. That's why I found most of these just traditionally ugly .

But seriously though, most of these covers are ugly and/or nothing special. The only good ones here I feel is Focus and Sulfur Aeon.

Carl Weathers went on. He didn't stop. I'll always remember his role in that stupid, yet funny on some level, movie, Happy Gilmore (the very poorly done prosthetic hand). And his own role in Arrested Development. I think he wouldn't have done any of those things if that scene in Predator had not become as kvlt.

Sasha Grey needs to not narrate every single action and thought that occurs to her in her films. It's a shame as she's pretty hot. She just won't shut up.

You guys are the ones going off topic, but if I comment on it, I'm going to get called out by a mod. But anyway: I think she should do a lot less of that crazy act. She err.. doesn't give enough time and attention to details. I mean, we get it, it's awesome, but the way she... almost looks like an autistic kid going apeshit when being asked to choose from too many flavours of lollypops. Oh dis one, no dis one, no dis, aghlaghlala, all of them at the same time, ggahajdsgahjaj give them to me oh yes oh yes hagdhjhagafaha.

Well, I remember, growing up, there was that one certain Jeanna Fine lady who was extremely good at it. And DT Heather, of course. Took it like a lesson. But I don't have a favourite one just for the ways she blows. Although there are many I dislike because of the way they do .
