As much as I don't mind their work after their black metal albums, to this day I still don't understand why they continue to go under the name Ulver. If a band is going to completely change the style of their music, like The Gathering did, they're no longer that same band. False advertising if you ask me.

Considering they had 2 black metal albums followed by 10+ Electronic albums, I think that horse has bolted and I can't see how it's false advertising anymore. Maybe they should change the first albums to another name

I understand you're being somewhat facetious, but since there are those who do think like this, it makes no sense considering they were originally black metal. They can come out with 100+ Electronica albums afterward for all I care. I'm more of a traditionalist. If they pulled a Prince and called themselves The Band Formerly Known As Ulver when they changed their style, that would've made more sense.

Now compare that to their first couple of albums.

I get it..other bands besides Ulver have done this as well. That's why I mentioned The Gathering.

By the way, thanks for making me aware of Semargl. They're good!

They are good until their pop phase.
After they became dubstep it's just... bleh

The "newer" pop-style song I heard wasn't bad, but I heard a couple from Attack on God and I agree. 10× better.

They could produce Jazzy Grindcore or Folk Pop Electronica at this point, a band's name is not declarative of what they output, it's how they output it. Ulver, despite being called a Black Metal band, was already bending the rules of productivity even at their first 3 drops. So the trend of ever evolving, back and forth and through dimensions, is still fitting of their name.

Agree to disagree I guess. The way I see it, if I play one of a band's albums for someone and then play another album and the person's first reaction/question is "how is that possibly the same band?" then the band name no longer fits. I always thought the "evolution" argument was a cop out and just an excuse for the band to come out with music of lesser quality. Most people would agree that bands usually change for the worse. Metallica is a prime example of this.

So Metallica should've changed name after ...And Justice For All then?

Not necessarily. I was using Metallica as an example of a band that "evolved" in the wrong direction by going softer and diminishing in quality. However, they remained in the hard rock/heavy metal category, so no name change necessary.

Very few bands have evolved in a favorable way as it is very difficult to do without alienating your main base. The only bands that come to mind that have pulled it off are Savatage and Moonspell.

I’ve never understood why people want bands to play the same music their whole career. There’s a hundred other black metal bands you can listen to that play something similar to Ulver’s black metal sound but hearing talented writers take on several different genres over their career and continue to make outstanding music is less common. The fact the same musicians released Nattens Madrigal, Perdition City, and The Assassination of Julius Caesar is far more impressive to me than a band like Darkthrone who it feels like releases the same album every few years and disappoints their fans who keep wanting another Transylvanian Hunger
