Norwegian vocalist Silje Wergeland has announced her departure from The Gathering after 16 years. Wergeland replaced Anneke Van Giersbergen, who left the group to focus on her project Agua de Annique, as lead singer of the band in early 2009. No details have been released regarding a successor.

Wergeland, of Octavia Sperati fame, joined The Gathering following van Giersbergen’s exit in 2007 and contributed to three studio albums and several tours during her tenure.

Notably, The Gathering have recently been performing with van Giersbergen as part of their Mandylion 30th-anniversary celebrations, with additional tour dates planned for 2026.

A statement from the band reads as follows: "We'd like to thank Silje for her contribution to the band over the past 16 years. We're very proud of the wonderful records we've made together (from The West Pole to Beautiful Distortion), and all the shows we've played. We will miss her as a fantastic vocalist and a dear friend. We wish her all the best in the future!"

In turn, Silje Wergeland commented: "It's a new dawn and a new year. After 16 years of creating and playing great music with The Gathering, it's time to move on to new ventures. I have had so many awesome experiences and made great memories with this band that will stay with me for the rest of my life. I wish my band mates all the best for the future. Thanks for all the great support and the lovely conversations with all you wonderful TG fans around the globe."

Too bad. I love her voice, and I think she did a very good job replacing Anneke. It was just recently that I watched some bootlegs of her performing some old The Gathering songs, and I believe she nailed them! Plus, some of my favourite The Gathering songs are from her era. Heroes for Ghosts is certainly on top right after Travel.

I look forward to hearing new solo music or from Silje or sogs by any bands/projects she joins in the future and I hope and believe the doors to The Gathering remain open to her just they have remained open for Anneke and other musicians who've been in this band over the years. I loved Silje's era and I remember eagerly looking forward to the West Pole because I wanted to know how the band was going to evolve once Anneke focused on her projects outside of the band; they did not disappoint and made amazing albums and songs which accompanied me through the years. Anneke and Silje sharing the stage back in 2015 was epic and unforgettable. To me this band feels a bit like a favourite TV show or film series with an ensemble cast where characters play different roles over the years, sometimes as lead characters, other times becoming supporting cast and maybe taking breaks every now and then but always making history.

Agreed, I've not been too fond in general of the albums with her (but then again, I've never been overly into Anneke-era The Gathering outside of Nighttime Birds and to a lesser degree Mandylion), but some songs from Disclosure, and especially Heroes For Ghosts and I Can See Four Miles, are comfortably my most listened songs from The Gathering, and even songs that I have less interest in weren't let down by her voice. It's by no means an era without things to celebrate.
