Swedish progressive metal band Soen will release their seventh studio album, Reliance, on January 16th via Silver Lining Music. Alongside the announcement, the band has unveiled the album’s lead single, called "Primal".

Recording sessions for the album were led by Alexander Backlund, known for his work with 1914 and Marty Friedman, at Fascination Street Studios, where he also managed mixing.

Drummer Martin Lopez (ex-Opeth) commented on the track: "‘Primal‘ is a song that came from a place of frustration with the world we’re living in. The corruption, the division and the suffocating grip that technology has on all of us. It’s heavy and straight to the point, built on riffs and raw energy, but it also opens up into a chorus that feels hopeful, like a reminder that light can still break through the dark."

Added frontman Joel Ekelöf: "For us, it’s about more than just aggression. It’s about encouraging people to find that fire again, to reconnect with passion, and to take those steps out of the darkness together."

Reliance tracklisting:

01. Primal
02. Mercenary
03. Discordia
04. Axis
05. Huntress
06. Unbound
07. Indifferent
08. Drifter
09. Draconian
10. Vellichor

Pretty ordinary, weak song for a single

Disappointing single. I liked their first few albums but they've since settled on a sound that seems to be get boring and generic with each release. The overt politics in this single doesn't help my interest either.

It feels like they started to aim at a completely different audience. Lotus was such a perfect mixture of high quality and approachability; everything that came after it clearly prioritized the latter over the former. I can understand why they'd want to do that, given the intent behind their music. At the end of the day, what's the point of entertaining metalheads; it might make for a better discography but doesn't necessarily make the world a better place.

It's another catchy Soen song, with the guitars getting crunchier/heavier with each album. I like it.

I don't like the two-note riff.
