Liturgy Of Death sees Mayhem following up their previous album and continuing with a more traditional take on black metal. While I’m glad the band has found their most stable line-up so far, I can’t help but think about all the incredible, mind-twisting unholy psalms I know they have in them, but which struggle to completely pour out of these gifted musicians.

First song released. In my opinion song has good opening, interesting riff but after 2 minutes becomes boring... Lets wait for February.

Hope it’s better than the last one.

It goes against the very canon of trve black metal.

Mayhem is new, never old, only what is 'old' Mayhem plays true metal, otherwise its more as Darkthrone. Started as DM, played Bm and later a bit changed sound(this case not so much) and its good. I like this chaos if we can say so. I wish band reach 10th album milestone .

A lot like Daemon, same formula. Not as big on these last two but still some solid and aggressive black metal.

Another fine effort and top notch performance from these legendary BM veterans. Equally as good as the previous album imo, just as dark, ferocious, and sinister as always

It's good BM, really solid. But I'm surprised. To me Mayhem have always sounded really unique and experimental for the time. This is... pretty normal solid evil trve black metal, nothing more nothing less.

Agree with all of this. I do think black metal is so saturated at this point there’s not many more new directions to go but this is a bit too standard of what we’ve come to expect from them and I was hoping for something less typical. But who knows, as I listen more I have a change of opinion.

Yes, it's a Mayhem album that doesn't take many risks. But the last song (The Sentence Of Absolution) is more ambitious; it reminds me of Hierophany's work, where they mix dissonances with esoteric rituals.

Quality wise it’s a slight improvement over the last, but at the end of the day it’s still the second dud in a row in the Mayhem camp.

Boring, mediocre, weak.
Despair and Funeral of Existence are the only decent songs, yet nothing I haven't heard before.
I'd love more of the latter half of Funeral of Existence, but also the first min of Propitious Death.
Weep for nothing and The Sentence of absolution are the poorest songs here.
The Sentence has Attila incantations and 60 secs of cool bongos at the end.
Realm of misery is a 5' filler with so much going on there and nothing sticking.
On a whole, a very forgettable album with little to offer.
Unbeknownst to them, they might be singing a liturgy to their own death.

Came here to say the same thing. I also think it's the best closing song they ever wrote

The title track of De Mysteriis would be my pick for best closing song, but "The Sentence Of Absolution" would be my next choice.

I think it's a very solid album. An easy 7, and will possibly go up after a few more listens.

I'm looking forward to hearing what these sound like in London tomorrow night. 🤘

Boring and repetitive is the perfect description for this album. All songs sound same. It's forgettable & mediocre at best. It is painful when a legendary name like Mayhem releases something that feels like they are just "clocking in" for work, especially compared to the raw intensity of the Legion era of Marduk or the nightmare layers of Akhlys. Attila sounds theatrical rather than possessed. It lacks that sharp, piercing delivery that gives you chills.

"Theatrical" sums up his live performance on Tuesday. I still thought they were great but I never expected Mayhem to become a band with so many costume changes!

It seems I like this album more than most though. I disagree that all songs sound the same, and it definitely gets better with each listen. I've been playing it a lot this week.

When you have a debut like Mysteriis, all other things seem weaker. But it's a great record, and that last song really reaches perfection.

It’s fine. Decent textures and dissonance to create a good atmosphere. Doesn’t really do anything extremely well though, and it loses a point for the massively over triggered bass drums.
