Steel Arctus deliver another blow of epic heavy power metal, this time defying the odds against the mighty Dreamruler.

Steel Arctus are a band who conjure up an exhilarating combination of epic heavy and power metal that matches the theme and ambition of their heroic fantasy comic-based cover arts. They've lit up the Greek heavy metal scene alongside bands such as Triumpher and Achelous since their formation in 2020; they unleashed their full-length debut Fire And Blood in the same year, and followed it up two years later with Master Of War, an album that didn't receive as much attention as I believe it deserved. Now, three years on, they return once again, this time hoping to cement their position as true warriors of steel in the thriving Greek heavy metal scene with their third record Dreamruler.

Although Master Of War didn't break any new ground for the genre, Steel Arctus still delivered epic anthems that stood among the best that power metal had to offer in 2022. As such, expectations were set quite high for Dreamruler, but let me tell you, this album has lived up to the standards of its predecessor. Dreamruler follows a visionary concept where the Steel Arctus warrior must embark on an epic ten-track voyage through a realm where fantasy and illusion meets reality, navigating a labyrinth within his own mind where dreams and nightmares collide, and conquering hidden fears that lie deep within his soul over the journey's course.

Although the battle in wait is one that dwells within the protagonist's mind rather than on the battlefield, the journey that lies ahead is all the more epic, one filled with glorious atmosphere, exhilarating melodies, and some of the finest power metal you'll encounter in 2025. The outcome from this adventure is just as heroically satisfying as anything the band has unleashed before. The key factor to that is the same that led Master Of War to being among my personal favorite releases in the genre in 2022, namely the hooks and melodies. Arguably even more important, however, are the great performances from each musician, which even surpass those on the previous album.

Firstly, let's talk about the guitarwork, as it's often key to making an album stand out from the crowd in this saturated genre. This means the riff melodies have to contain enough memorable catchy hooks, the tone has to be heavy and punchy and not thin, and the solos have to really excite you. Thankfully, Nash G provides all of this in abundance, whether through his hook-laden riff melodies, great wailing leads, or more subtle acoustic sections. Secondly, the rhythm section serves as the album's beating pulse; Strutter's bass is prominent in sound, while Minas Chatziminas pounds thunderously with style alongside him. Alongside this, the synths and keys provide the ideal epic backdrop for the album.

Dreamruler is the most epic and accomplished album Steel Arctus have put out so far. It's certainly their most consistent, with very few, if any, skippable moments, although the previous offering did have one or two songs that potentially exceed any found on this record ("Cry For Redemption" and "Glorious Days"). It's also a big step up in terms of production, with a much punchier and more professional sound quality. Dreamruler's downside is its originality or lack of, although should you even be expecting anything new or cliche-breaking from an album of this kind anyway? What you do get is high-quality epic heavy/power metal that will do no wrong in pleasing fans of this category. If you're a keen follower of NWOTHM but have yet to delve into what the Greek scene has to offer, then it's time to make amends, as there's plenty of gems there waiting to be uncovered, and Steel Arctus are now at the very forefront of it.
