So you guys like death metal? Me too, but only if it's either of superb quality or dares to venture into uncharted territories. But what about generic death metal? You know, band 'A' inventing the genre, band 'B' doing what band 'A' does, sometimes even better, sometimes a bit worse, then band 'C' rips off band 'B' (which is already basically a rip-off of band 'A'), then band 'D' rips off band 'C', until we get a genre plagued by hundreds of bands doing the same goddamn thing. Who the fudge has the patience to even wade through all that crap, let alone enjoy it? To put it bluntly, In Torment In Hell sounds like an album made by a band 'Z', who ripped off all the other bands preceding it in alphabetic order. Yup, it's that generic and derivative.
If there's one way in which this album impresses, it's the way its tracks are virtually indistinguishable one from another. It doesn't matter if I'm listening to the title track, "Child of God" or "Christ Don't Care" (way to go all mufukkin' gangsta on themz gremmar thur), all I get is constant guitar mashing that serves no purpose. Now I hear fans screaming: "You pussy, this is brutal death metal, it's supposed to be like that!" Brutal. Really? What's brutal about this 100% human factor-free, utterly emotionless blasturbation? Brutal implies visceral emotions, violent and morbid atmosphere, and Deicide appears to be blissfully unaware of the existence of these feelings on this album. And talk about lyrics... The good Lord and Christ doesn't get mentioned this many times at church on Sunday. "Fuck Christ and Hail Satan" attitude stopped being even the least bit impressive or shocking a long, long time ago.
If memory serves me, I recall reading somewhere that the album was written and recorded in less than a week. I don't know if this is true, but it would indeed explain how this piece of turd came into existence and why it sounds like someone briefly explained to a computer what death metal is, and let it write the album. If you failed to decipher the metaphor, I'll elaborate: In Torment In Hell is well performed, decently structured, but just plain mind-numbingly generic and boring. The phrase "perfect cure for insomnia" is used and recycled even more than the riffs on this album, if that's even possible, but it describes my feelings for the album better than any review could.
