I've seen them live twice, pretty entertaining. They look stupid as hell in their hoodies, though, like angsty high school social recluses. I've never felt compelled to go out and get their albums or anything.

It's on UK Spotify? It's not even available in Finland. ![]() Will probably give it a good listen. I'm a bit surprised they're so highly esteemed here. I always considered them a bit opportunistic, jumping on the Hipster BM bandwagon and getting their fame mostly due to being the only ones doing it in Finland. But yeah, they are not bad musically, and it's not like they're WITTR copycats. More like Nachtmystium, but not many bands sound like them so it's OK. >_>

Ah must be a UK thing then. Yeah, there's definitely a bit of 'Instinct: Decay' in this band. I don't think that's a fair appraisal of them though. There's nothing that specifically points to a hipster ideal, neither in image or style. And how many black metal bands can say they've mixed in krautrock? Don't confuse a small smattering of people on here praising them with a world-recognised acceptance (8000 last.fm listeners is far from "fame"), they're hardly gonna be giving up their day jobs ;]

21.10.2011 - 20:40 Written by X-Ray Rod on 21.10.2011 at 20:32 How so? They appeared just when it became trendy to be eclectic, psychedelic, and play BM (or other forms of extreme metal) without identifying with the traditional scene and its conventions. Southern Lord material from the beginning. I'm not saying that's bad. I like that kind of music. I am a shameless hipster. Just pointing out the obvious.

If they played some form of post-rock or shoegaze tinged black metal I would agree with you but psychedelic black metal is a long way off approaching the hipster colonies. By your definition you could call anything on the verge of new and innovative music hipster. To be honest with you I don't really believe in "hipster black metal" - I think the hipster elements come from the people that flock to them. Wolves in the Throne Room and Deathspell Omega for example have been lucky/unlucky to be lumped into that area. Has nothing to do with their playing style.

21.10.2011 - 21:08 Written by IronAngel on 21.10.2011 at 20:40 I'm saying a lot of second wave black metal on their music, it's drowning in other genres but that's another thing. By your logic I'm also gonna call every band that is playing a genre that is popular at that specific moment in time Hipsters, opportunistic people... But even that backward logic doesn't apply here. I would agree with you if I actually saw MANY bands coming out of nowhere playing the same thing but even you couldn't name a band similar to Oranssi Puzu, the mention of Nachtmystium isn't even enough, we're talking about ONE band more that plays a similar style (like joe said: And how many black metal bands can say they've mixed in krautrock? ). I would think that your logic could apply to this blackgaze movement that is FAR bigger than this "trend" (which is not trend at all tbh...) I'm going to quote Joe here because I feel like he said it well enough: Written by [user id=4365] on 21.10.2011 at 20:15 A band being a opportunistic and trendy just because they play a different thing?.... Hmyeah, considering their HUUUUUGE (not) fanbase and HUUUUUGE amount of bands playing the exact same thing (not)...., I have a hard time buying that.

Well, Oransi Pazzuzu do play a hipster festival such as Incubate in Tilburg, so I tend to agree with Iron Angel in that respect. Btw, don't get me wrong currently what people hipster music is some of the best around. But then again I wouldn't class OP as amongst the best around. They tend to be too ecllectic for their own good. If the focussed their music more they would be a better band. Oh and they will be playing Roadburn 2012 I think, talk about a festival that attracts hipsters but also old fucks like me who are stuck in their ways

Skullflower played at an arts festival in Oxford a few months ago so by that account they're a hipster band too. It's irrelevant where you might play. Those bands all have nothing in common, it's you that's identified it as a "hipster" festival, thus highlighting my original point ;]

21.10.2011 - 21:45 Written by [user id=4365] on 21.10.2011 at 21:31 if you ever Incubate and also Roadburn you'll see both are "hipster" festivals. but actually hipsters are just the nerds and trendies of yesteryear. They'll move along once their bibles say those sort of bands are out of vogue.

You're taking my comment awfully seriously. I'm just explaining the gut feeling I've had which made me treat them with mild amusement and skepticism. They have this definite aura of pseudo-intellectualism and of being "out there" with their eclectic psychedelia, geeky stage appearance and ridicilous lyrics/song titles. I equate that with hipsterism, which is quite alright in my books.

21.10.2011 - 23:31 Written by IronAngel on 21.10.2011 at 23:12 You see, my problem is that I don't know how pseudo-intellectualism goes together with being goofy. Just from listening to the music I think the guys are having a blast which is probably one of the most unpretentious (therefore un-hipster) things you can do while recording... That's just me though. If having ridiculous lyrics is somehow related to that kind of "hipster" behaviour then holy shit Immortal won the race with their lyrics... and overall imagery.
