I remember there used to be a topic about them, but it was gone so I made a new one. I also remember people here didn't like Nirvana that much, but not why. So what I'd like u to do is to write down what you like about them, what you don't and anything that comes in mind about them, facts and stuff.

well, I only have their best of and that was it for me. I listened to the mtv unplugged several times and I think they have good songs. Of course I don't have any of the other albums so I can only have a superficial opinion about them.

I really enjoyed some of the surreal lyrics Cobain wrote. Of course his death really helped the sales of the band but oh well they were pretty big before he died anyway.

Nirvana are a great band, thats all I can say really. I know they're a bit hit and miss with some people mainly due to all the attention they got after "Smells like Teen Spirit" was written, but I think they're brilliant on a whole. Not just for that song. I prefer their "In Utero" album to "Nevermind" though, which always came across as just a collection of poppy grunge songs and not exactly great as an album.

Yeah, I'm with you there. He was an artist, its just a shame he felt the need to top himself. I'm sure he had loads more musical potential within him, not just grunge songs either.

Though I don't listen that much to Nirvana anymore, I have a really special liking for this band. It's kind of a sentimental bond, because basically I started really getting into music when I was I was 12, in 1993, right in the middle of the Nirvana boom when they released In Utero, and this was the first band I really worshipped, like almost everybody my age back then I dressed like Kurt Cobain and stuff lol.

Somehow, although the lyrics didn't make sense to me back then - and most of the time, still don't - all that rage and rawness of the music and the oevrall attitude really spoke to me on a deep level. I guess it caught me in the middle of my teenage identity crisis. Anyway, Nirvana has represented a very important step in the development of my personality. Incidentally, it's also more or less than thanks to Nirvana that I got deeper into metal

My favourite album is Bleach by the way, I think it's the one that carries the true identity of the band, before they got aired a lot and started writing 'commercial' music. I like the rest as well though, except Incesticide, which I see more as a failed attempt of Geffen at cashing on the name of the band.

I got into Nirvana by my sister who bought the Nevermind album when it came out...they are like what everyone mentioned them as...the perfect storm for my angst as a teenager...I enjoy all their music and Nevermind is probably my favorite album from them...

...the perfect storm for my angst as a teenager...

Maybe I wouldn't use the exact same words to describe it, but this is what I feel about Nirvana right now. I was in kindergarten when they had their hightime, so I don't know what kind of affect they had to people back then. To me listening to Nirvana is like reading a book, a good book, that every time you read it, you can find something new for yourself, something that describes the problems you have to deal at the moment and helps you realize them. You can listen to the same song, but every time you do it, you're in a different state of mind and you realize it differently.
Starting listening to Nirvana was the turning point for me and it changed my way of thinking a lot. (I'm not gonna talk about that more pecificly, cause there's so much to write and explain, I should better make it a book ) Anyway, I wouldn't say Nirvana is music in the term of entertainment, even though they were pretty big in their hightime. I believe the reason they became mainstream was because they were so different from mainstream. The fact that they were so good became fatal to them.

nirvana was my favourite band for quite some time when i was younger, 12 perhaps, when i started listening to metal i laid them aside and didnt listen to them anymore.

but since a while im finding myself enjoying alternative and poppy stuff more and more, naturally im also enjoying nirvana again since they combine the best of those two.

i dont like all of their stuff though, for example my favourite songs by them are off bleach and incesticide, but i dislike the bigger part of the songs on both, i also like nevermind and unplugged a lot, although i think there are less standout songs, but also a lot less 'bad' songs. i dont like in utero at all though...

i always wonder what their next album would have sounded like, with a genius song like "you know you're right" on it after all...

btw holden; awesome book

I'm happy they never could do another album. Unlike Bas, I think "You Know You're Right" is very bad. This song sounds like leftovers from In Utero, too crap and boring to have a spot on the album.

strange how our opinions vary, that you see it as a worse version of an in utero song while i dont like in utero at all but enjoy this song...

in my opinion you know you're right just has a certain something, might have something to do with kurt probably being full of drugs at the time he sang it, while in utero as a whole generally doesnt have much to offer for me at all, i think the songs on there are just really boring, like pennyroyal tea for example, horribly lame song if you ask me. the only song really worth mentioning for me from that disc would be dumb.

but oh well, seems like our opinions vary here, let's leave it at that

I think I enjoy In Utero because it had the same dirty, filthy, tortured side that Bleach had. They wrote this album because they thought Nevermind was a bit too clean and mainstream and they didn't want to be pop icons. So yeah, although there's a couple of bad tracks on In Utero, I still like the spirit and the overall atmosphere of the whole album

MTV Unplugged Live In New York is their best release in my opinion. So I agree with you on that live show thing.

This is a fantastic album. i'm not into rock too much and i just have listened to some famous rock bands like radiohead, pink floyd, blur, oasis, foo fighters and bands like these. but this album is just fantastic. all songs are composed well and also all the personals performed well.. great drums, bass, guitar, vocal.. and good mixing by Butch Vig. the mixing was so important to sound better...

i like the song Kurt did with Earth on Sunn Amps and Smashed Guitars. which i think btw,if Kurt was still alive today. he would be dabbling in Noise,Avant Garde,Drone Music..and moved on from Nirvana..

Nice prediction... I always wondered that if he was alive, he couldn't repeat his successes, like Guns n' Roses and Metallica.
But I'm agree with your view, he would leave Rock, and enter to Drone/noise music. Although most of people just say "He was Gay", I must ass something to this statement, "He was a genius Gay"...

people are fucking stupid,Kurt was one of the most sincere musicians that ever lived.sure Nirvana werent doing anything too original musically, and bands like dinosaur jr,pixies, melvins, sonic youth, were doing the same music before them, but what made the band standout was Kurt's Voice and Lyrics .that's what made Nirvana Nirvana

Maybe it's true about some of hard rock and heavy metal bands like Guns n' Roses and Metallica which were mainstream in late 80's and with coming Nirvana, they came down and gave their place to Nirvana!! but in general they had nothing to do with metal!!! as I know they liked Slayer, Iron Maiden and some other heavy and thrash metal bands.

80's metal killed itself.i really dont see how Nirvana which btw was a Post Punk/Hardcore band and not metal, had anything to do with the demise of the *80's metal scene*

suicidal?,i dont think i ever recall hearing anything about Nirvana fans offing themselves

Judas Priest on the other hand.....

but nice try kiddo

Damn, Smells Like Teen Spirit, is such a very suicidal song. IMO most image of the band and the band's attitude are around teen, youth Americans. If become more growing, fans would leave Nirvana genre, then find other style music.

It's from their first album Bleach, and it's written by Kurt Cobain's first girlfriend, and then Cobain re-write that!
