Death metal to me is not just the best metal genre among others.....it is the among the most fucking best inventions of humankind.....
It shows how much freedom is in our hands (Or How less freedom to be precise)......
OMG Death metalis among the bestest of the bestest things ever.......
No matter how skyhigh angry or sad you get or you've gone there
is a death metal song out there that is above that.......
Death metal is a god send among the mainstream
brandy-for-the-damned and fucked up MUSIC-FOR-THE-COMMON-MORON.........
I guess at the end of the day I listen to more Black metal than death... but I hate to say that one genre is 'better' than the other. I'd rather listen to a kickass Death metal band than some crappy bedroom BM losers.
Really depends on my mood, what I'm doing and what's been going on in my life. I really can't put one above another, it's more like certain bands sounds are just going with me better than another band's sound.
At first I acted like I really liked black even though I was mostly into stuff like Mayhem, Cradle of Filth, Emperor and some Gorgoroth. Then I found out death was much more appealing to me. Now, concerning technicality, I don't know. There are many weak tremolo picking, inverted power chord garage black metal bands, but also death ones. I still say death though, even though both genres can be amazing.

Personally i am little against placing one genre over another, i believe the modern day is metal's darkest hour, and that all metal genres should rather work together than rip eachothers throats out (ironically one of my hobbies)but i do love to see blood splat on the wall
so if i had to take all factors into account it would look like this
most melodic: Death Metal
Most talanted vocals: Black metal
Most speed: tie
Most vivid: Black Metal
most entertaining live performance: Black Metal
Overrall Black Metal (3) Death metal (1)
of course this is my personal opinion
-and even if you hate Black Metal vocals you have to admit it takes alot of talant and quite a voice to do so

It's interesting that you consider DM to be more melodic than Black. Personally I find that a large number of DM bands these days often go for arhythmic, overly technical, or 'brutal' riffs. Much black metal on the other hand has always had it's hand in creating atmosphere through melodic riffing. To each his own though of course.

I find it weird too. I agree on all his points, apart from the melodic aspect. Unless you're talking of melodic Death Metal (and even then, it's debatable), there's no way DM can be more melodic than BM. And surely not Brutal Death, as it has no melodic touch whatsoever. The total lack of melody is the main reason why I don't like DM, along with the boring vocals.
Also, talking of atmosphere, most DM nowadays has none and is totally emotionless. Another point on which BM beats DM hands down.
Anyway, I know it's no more than my own opinion but, to me, Black Metal has the best of everything:
1. speed but with keeping good structures and progression (unlike DM that often sounds just like a chaotic mess with barely anything memorable)
2. melodic and emotional (again, unlike DM)
3. my favorite style of vocals
4. raw sound (unlike much of the metal stuff that is way too overpolished these days, and you can include lots of DM albums that sound way too triggered and synthesized even if it's extreme music)
5. aggressivity and harshness other genres can hardly match
6. it depends but you can find lots of interesting lyrics in BM (unlike Brutal Death that displays only pure debility on this aspect with very few exceptions - Nile being one of those exceptions)
7. I like the aesthetic in general in BM, even though I don't look like a metalhead (something I could hardly do, as I'm working for the federal government in my country)
8. I prefer the tone of the guitars in BM (distorted and sharp - DM is too downtuned)
9. lots of atmosphere (no other genre has the same entrancing effect on me that BM has)
10. lots of musical proficiency in BM (if you check the right bands) but it still feels like songs and not just like wankery
For my tastes, Black Metal is a win in every aspect. However, it really depends on bands because there are tons of shitty bands in the genre. I have this opinion that Black Metal is either awesome or utter crap, with not much middle ground.

"Why would we fear death, when life is so much more frightening?"
I guess your right
it is just the death metal(Norther, Arch Enemy, Opeth, Etc)i listien to i consider more melodic then the black metal {gorgoroth, Ov Hell, Immortal, Mayhem, Etc) i listien too
so it is all about how you look at it from your viewpoint, me i consider the feath metal i listien too more melodic i guess mainly becuase i listien to melodic death metal

There's Melodic Black Metal too you know; Dark fortress, Naglfar, Ancient, ...
anyways, i prefer Death metal, my 2nd favorite genre right after Thrash.

You put me in a really tight spot here. Black Metal is swamped by shitty bedroom acts, but Death Metal has the subgenre Brutal Death Metal, and trying to find a good Brutal Death Metal album is like trying to find a gold brick in an ocean of shit. When it came right down to it, I decided to look at what I had in my collection, and the majority of what I have is Death Metal, so I went with that.
Praise The Unlord For Both!!!
I Find Genre Tags ridiculous.
DM may be as melodic, as fast or as cold as BM
Seriously depends of the band your listening to.
I believe genres has placed so many barriers in the musical creation process lately.

I agree. And adding a new genre every time something new comes out is ridiculous. Blackened death? Post Doom? Its just stupid.

while at one level i am opposed to the near-scientific categorization and classification of metal, the fact remains is that genre tags are important. they do serve to differentiate one style from another, and are important cues for people looking into uncovering more metal that fits their personal tastes. removal of tags could be disastrous. the last thing i want as a fan of doom/sludge/black/OLD dm is to walk into the record store and pick up some fucking euroflowerpowermetal band because, well, genre tags have all been removed and they are all just "METAL" now.
there is a vast difference in dm and bm, at least in the originators of both styles. while the modern crap might have increasingly melded the two into one similar style (where morons think even shit like COB is melodic black now) there are still vast canyons separating one from the other.
tags ultimately do not limit bands. at least not any bands worth a shit.
good bands will always progress and incorporate different aspects of what pleases them into their music.
the mediocre bands hopping the cool train? not so much.

Death metal because theres more talent and the vocals are better
More talents: depends on the bands you're listening to. There's a lot of shitty DM bands. Also, DM tends to be a bit overrated as for technicality. I have the feeling some people think automatically "technical" as soon as they hear the term Death Metal. There are BM that are very technical and DM bands who are not technical at all.
vocals are better: I know that some people prefer growls to BM vocals (something I will never understand because, Imo, growls are pure shit and I utterly hate them), but to simply say they are better is far-fetched. Growls require no talent whatsoever while performing great BM vocals is not easy.

They shake your hand and they smile and they buy you a drink
They say we'll be your friends we'll stick with you till the end
But everybody's only looking out for themselves
And you say who can you trust I'll tell you nobody
I think Death is better...Guitars are more effective...everything is great about it...
I don't like Black Metal lyrics...
It seems that a 8-7 Years old baby wrote them...:D

Torn we walk alone, we sleep in silent shades
The grandeur fades, the meaning never known

Imo, there's nothing more childish and stupid than lyrics abouts guts and gore like tons of DM bands are writing. If there's an element that sucks donkey balls in DM, it's precisely lyrics.
To each his own I guess.

It is has more to offer and it's a better atmosphere that kinda makes youre mind travel away.
For me, death metal is more like somthing to listen to when I am doing something else at the same time. With black metal it is possible to Dream awaaay
