Honestly, I'm still very surprised by the amounts of positive acclaim for this album on this site. Even though most popular albums have relatively high rating on MS, the rating on this one should be far lower, especially relative to what AiC have shown they are capable of doing (even in the not-so-distant past).

Well it's all opinion my friend, not everyone is going to think the same way. It's not easy for me to be negative on this album when I just can't help but think more positive on this, since I do like a good bit of songs from this album. Also take note I'm not the biggest AIC fan.But I do like them a lot,Some people are just going to dislike or like things more then others.

I couldn't express this better than you did. As the AiC fangirl that I am, I found it hard to go through the whole album. I had to listen to it in three sittings. It's a huge letdown, and it doesn't make me long for any more new releases. It would stain the almost perfect discography they had -until 2013- all the more.

Yeah I remember being quite bewildered by the response it was receiving. Glad to see that at least someone agrees with my viewpoint here.

Could it be a generational thing? Perhaps it appeals to people who started only with the new AiC? I don't know, I can't tell. I was pretty young when I discovered them, around 2000, but it was still a long time after Laney's death, so I might not be the most qualified to push the generation argument.

Interesting theory. I'm honestly not so sure, but I do think that there are a lot of people that are satisfied when AiC produce the standard fare. None of the bands lumped into the odd "grunge" moniker were particularly adventurous aside from Soundgarden, and I think many active listeners in the genre just really love the sound of it. It's also why so many people idolize Clutch when it's obvious they aren't producing earth-shaking music (only music that is very good). It doesn't help my music taste is all over the map right now, so maybe I just couldn't see the quality songs on this album because I can only see the relative lack of variety.

Yeah you have a point. I didn't think past the band itself there. To be honest the album didn't incite me to reflect on more than its own mediocrity .
On the variety thing. I am experiencing the same thing right now. I think this is the first time in my life (by that I mean it's been about three years) that I find myself hoping from one thing to another, and creating all kinds of connections that I never saw before, even in the old stuff I used to listen to. That sentence could merely be reduced to "growing up and discovering new things just like everyone else" but as a result, instead of being more critical on the quality, I became much less lenient on the lack of variety.

This is the only band that could have had a perfect discography if they didn't release this album. No band in the world has a perfect discography, at least not one I know of, except this band, until 2013.. Sad, really.
