What bands/albums got you into Death Metal

Cannibal Corpse Vile in 96 was the beginning of the end for me. There was a nice death metal community in WPB, FL during my high school years, lots of random shows that turned me onto the genre.

Prior to that, a friend gave me some heavy/thrash metal mix tapes with Megadeth, Black Sabbath, and Slayer.

I listened to those albums a fair bit, but it wasn't until about 4 years ago until i really got into the genre.

My first album with death metal growls instead of clead vocals or thrash metal singing was "Damage Done" from Dark Tranquillity. The album that made me fall in love with "pure" Death Metal was "Induvidual Thought Patterns" from Death followed by great albums from Amon Amarth, Morbid Angel and Cannibal Corpse...

I was in fifth grade when a friend showed me Nile. Hated the fuck out of it haha. But I love the band now . I think was a few songs from In the Darkened Shrines that got me interested, but I honestly didn't get as into death metal as black metal until I began listening to Behemoth, which was years later. Still one of my favorite bands.

I probably would have hated them too, but would have appreciated the introduction at such an early age. In fifth grade I was exposed to Slipknot and Lamb of God and As I Lay Dying. All of them were too extreme for me at the time, I remember hating the vocals, the production, how noisy everything sounded. Funny how tastes develop...

The first death metal album I ever heard was "Leprosy" by Death, followed very soon afterwards by Carcass' "Necroticism..." The latter album is still my fave death metal release all these years later.

Napalm Death - Harmony Corruption. read about them in a Spin magazine, they had it at the base exchange for $2.99 on tape. Promo copy with a red construction paper insert, black inked type with Earache logo rather than the proper album art/lyrics. Would have been early '91.

Still love that album. Love how it centered around the drumming, with the guitars a blur like a hurricane going around.

Yeah you certainly did. Back then i hadn't really delved into Death Metal at all. The early Therion was probably the first stuff i got into because i could relate to the bands progression. Not sure how i came out Vital Remains, and then you showed me Mithras, and the ambiance was cool i found. I don't listen to them a lot any more (except for this song not off their albums https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I9Yjb1IEJ1Q ) but they are are great band! I'll look out for the new album.

was already used to velocity - listened to some really fast/aggressive punk (Suicidal Tendencies' debut was amongst my favorite cassettes) as well as Ministry. had been into those since '89. also had my initial immersion into thrash with megadeth (Peace Sells) and anthrax by that time.

the vocals took getting used to - far harsher than what i was accustomed to.

the fact the lyrics were intelligent rather than "Satam satam satam" also gave the album some value. I still love the intro riff/bit of "Suffer The Children."

Death and Hypocrisy. Opeth did something but it was those two bands that really made me dive intro the extreme. Bloodbath and Vomitory reinforced it later.

Death

Also one of my first death metal bands. Symbolic has been a favourite of mine since I first heard it. Cynic and Atheist were there around my start and I remember Hammer Smashed Face by Cannibal Corpse being one of the first pure death metal songs I heard. At that time, even Children of Bodom vocals seemed harsh to me so I really thought Chris Barnes' vocals were crazy, but the riff work in that song and the power behind it really helped develop my tastes for death metal. Also I recall Six Feet Under being one of the first DM bands I heard.

Dethklok and Cannibal Corpse. I still have more bands to listen to.

To turn to the topic, my guitar teacher showed me Death's Leprosy about 9 years ago (I was 8 at the time) and I've been hooked ever since. I'd already been listening to metal since birth (Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath, etc...) but my parents never encountered extreme music before that.

I dunno if that's really appropriate?

I'd be a bit unhappy if someone introduced my kid to that kind of thing. I mean I might listen to Metal but I can censor at home and also explain certain things to her.

I want her to grow up completely middle class and as far away from the alienating and impoverishing bollocks of alternative scenes that I lived through (and in Australia the alternative scenes are generally associated with poverty, social welfare dependency and drug/alcohol abuse).

Oh yeah I can definitely say it wasn't an appropriate thing to do, but then again, I can't say I hold any resentments towards him for it.

Morbid Angel - Blessed are the Sick and Obituary - Slowly We Rot. I bought them off an older kid at school. Dance music or "Rave" started to become popular at that time and all these guys were cutting there hair and throwing out the denim and leather in favour of Joe Bloggs jeans and NAFF jackets. I had a nice collection by the end of the year.

It was only 2010 when I got into death metal, I started out with Opeth, but for the prog, not the death metal. But I guess it changed my perception towards it because not long after that I had an explosion of music discoveries within death metal. Not counting Opeth, there were two albums that made the biggest impression on me:

Morbid Angel - Altars of Madness
and
Entombed - Left Hand Path

I think you'd probably agree that as starting points go, those two albums can open a lot of doors.

Yep, 2 of the biggest deah metal classics of all time. You can't get a better start than that I guess.

Cannibal Corpse - Gallery of Suicide and later that year Bloodthirst was released. Those were among the first death metal albums I'd heard so you could say they're what got me into the sub-genre.

Other death metal bands I began listening to around that time were Deicide, Six Feet Under, Sinister, Hypocrisy and Vomitory I think.

Not a Cannibal Corpse fan anymore and only very rarely listen to Deicide or Six Feet Under. Sinister, early Hypocrisy and Vomitory remain among my favourites though.

Dismember - Indecent and Obscene.

And I'm still heavily into OSDM and its permutations.

Alice in chains and iron maiden's "run to the hills" got me on the way to permanent ear abuse, but I was craving heavier things shortly after,
starting with judas priest "pain killer" then testimant/sepultura and then amon "feasting the beast", that's when it became terminal 24 years ago,
and now its brutal death metal/black metal and anything inbetween

Morbid Angel and Cannibal Corpse

The ones that did it for me was Bloodbath's "Nightmares Made Flesh", Daath's "The Hinderers" and Behemoth's "Demigod". Back then because I thought the lyrics was funny(especially "Eaten"), now because I enjoy the music.

What about Infant Annihilator or Dethklok? I still have yet to get in to DM more.
