Seems like it's so. But there must be someone who's been in Barcelona! One doesn't have to live there to be able to recommend a bar... Those guide books are hopeless, since I'm not willing to listen to techno or jazz...

I was in Barcelona last December with six friends to attend an Iron Maiden concert (unfortunately, their supporters were Trivium, one of the worst band I have ever seen live). We went to a big bar called L'Ovella Negra (which means "The Black Sheep" in Catalan), near to Marina metro station, which is apparently the place were Barcelonese youth tend to meet - the most renowned Rock/Metal concert arena, Razzmatazz, is located in this area too. L'Ovella Negra is an old factory which the owner converted into a rock bar (i.e. expect it to be big, cheap, loud and dirty!), so you can listen from old 70's Prog Rock like Led Zeppelin to contemporary Heavy Metal. They open from Thursdays to Sundays until 3 a.m. and the usual beverages you should drink there are, of course, Sangría and beer. Don't hesitate to taste Sangría anywhere you go in Spain!

However, I was quite disappointed with Barcelona's nightlife, accostumed as I am to Madrid's crazy nights. Perhaps it is due to the fact that we arrived in December instead of August and that the town is more crowded during summer, I don't know, but we found quite a cold town with little people, little traffic and almost no public transport during the night (compared to Madrid, of course; I assume Helsinki is even worse at late autumn's nights!). I certainly wish you more luck than we had.

Hope I was of some help

Obviously, you have never visited my home town . Believe me, I have been in cities like Berlin, Barcelona and Rome at night and they have nothing in common with Madrid's overcrowded nightlife.

Quote:

I don't know what you are talking about, "Atmaziros"?

Quote:
BTW I forhot say to Ernator that she can wear T-Shirt whit 'Fuck Real Madrid' whit no fear of attacking ehheh thats best part of Barca

That's right although there are many RCD Espanyol fans in Barcelona, who are relatively friendly to Real Madrid supporters because they have a common enemy, FC Barcelona (by the way, "Barça" is only used to refer to the football/basketball/waterpolo/hockey team FC Barcelona, never applied to name the city).

Quote:
PS Does Valencia are in Catalonia too?

NO! Valencia is the capital of a different "Comunidad Autónoma" (autonomous region), the Comunidad Valenciana. In fact, Catalan nationalists use to claim Comunidad Valenciana and the Balearic Islands as part of their home territory because they speak Catalan too, although in different dialects (Valencian and Balear). Some years ago, there was a great political turmoil on how to name their language because Valencians and Balearics felt discriminated against when they were told that their dialects were nothing but variants of Catalan (which is a right statement). In the end, the officials decided to call their tongue "the language that is called Catalan in Catalonia, Valencian in Comunidad Valenciana and Balear in the Balearic Islands" or [irony]shortly[/irony] "Catalan/Valencian/Balear". Anyway, never call people from Valencia or Mallorca "Catalan" because they will punch you very hard in the face.

I was asked to tell about my "Adventures in Spain", so here it goes...

First of all I was really surprised to notice that very few people actually spoke English in Barcelona. I would've expected the ticket officer at the airport to know English, but it was hopeless to try to buy a train ticket. I spoke English to him and he answered in Spanish. I got my ticket after all... Same with all the restaurants. Some places even had menus in English, but the waiters didn't speak a word of English.

I visited lots of sights during the 4 days: Picasso-museum (it took an hour to get in there and it was raining heavily all the time), Parc Güell (amazing, one of the prettiest things I've ever seen), Parc de la Ciutadella (the fountain was beautiful), Barceloneta (the houses were pretty, but the narrow streets looked somewhat suspicious), Sagrada Familia (I didn't go inside though), Parc de Montjüic (probably only saw a minor part of it, it was so huge), Nou Camp (the highlight of my trip). Then I of course walked through La Rambla numerous times and I also went to the harbour every night. It was so nice to see the sky getting darker and feel the wind after a long, hot day.

Thanks to my stomach, I couldn't really think of going to any bars. I have a very sensitive stomach, so the different foods and customs of Barcelona, didn't suit me. These people eat at the wrong time! I usually have my lunch at 11 or 12 (they're having their 2nd breakfast then, what are they, hobbits?), I have my dinner at 17 or 18 (they're having tapes then), here we go to bar around 23 (they start partying at 3am!)... I did taste Paella and Sangria though and liked both.

The public transport worked well. Most of the stations were under renovation though, so it took some time to find the way in and out sometimes.

The people in Barcelona seemed a bit distant, but I'm familiar with that, I'm a Finn.

Yeah, well Camp Nou was amazing, like I already said at the football-thread. The stadium was smaller than I expected. But at least I can say I've been there, not seen a game though. I bought myself a Barca-scarf. At the store there was everything and I really mean everything sold with a Barca-logo on it. I wonder who'll buy chips and then keep the greasy package, because it has Barca's logo on it... And I saw Carles Puyol walking on the street on my way back from the stadium. I didn't say anything to him, since I usually try to avoid being an annoying fan.. I just stared at him like this and much to my surprise he stared back at me.

And about Spanish guys...they're like any South-European guys, always flirting with anything that moves. Though I think most of them thought my brother was my boyfriend...

Well, that was a great feedback concerning my request, Ernotar! Congratulations!

Written by Ernotar on 22.08.2007 at 13:21

First of all I was really surprised to notice that very few people actually spoke English in Barcelona. (...) Same with all the restaurants. Some places even had menus in English, but the waiters didn't speak a word of English. (...) These people eat at the wrong time! I usually have my lunch at 11 or 12 (they're having their 2nd breakfast then, what are they, hobbits?), I have my dinner at 17 or 18 (they're having tapes then), here we go to bar around 23 (they start partying at 3am!)...

I know I should have warned you of all this. Actually, in Spain, common lunchtime is between 13h - 15h and we have dinner at least at 20:30. In fact, what you call "2nd breakfast" is either people who woke up late (in the North European sense, for we don't call waking up at 10:30 in holidays "late" here; on the contrary, we find it quite usual during free summertime) and had their breakfast at this point, which I'm afraid it was the case, or just Barcelona workers who were simply taking a stop for coffee.
Oh, and partying at 3 a.m. is very, very normal in Spain too. For example, I, a Madrid young citizen, usually date my friends at 22:00h. First we go for dinner, and as we finish (about 23h-23.15) we go to the first bar and have a free drink (a very small shot glass with a low-alcoholic beverage which is called 'chupito' and which barmen offer you hoping you will stay at their place). Once we are saturated with blatant terrorism (aka Reggaeton), we flee and enter another bar in the same street, a rock bar if it is possible. There is where we get wasted. When we are no longer amused with so much Led Zeppelin and stuff, we change the place again and so on. I usually take the bus home at 4.30 or later. (Many, many Spaniards prefer to return home at dawn, but it's not my case. What about you, Aylee_Bodom?)

On the other hand, I think I have stated many times on Metal Storm that Spaniards suck at learning new languages, especially English, and those who understand it cannot pronounce it properly. You should not be shocked, it's just that we are too pathetic and egocentric -I try not to belong to this group but to do my best as a person and as a polyglot- to make an effort and open up to non-Spanish, non-Hispanic cultures.

Written by Ernotar on 22.08.2007 at 13:21

Then I of course walked through La Rambla numerous times and I also went to the harbour every night. It was so nice to see the sky getting darker and feel the wind after a long, hot day.

Parc Güell and Montjuïc are the most impressive things I saw in Barcelona.
In Parc Güell, which was entirely designed by Gaudí, we met an old Barcelonese who told us everything about the park, the Olympic Games in 1992 (during which he worked as a driver for hockey referees), Andoni Gaudí's life (which he knew as if he had been his biographer) and Barcelona in general. When we told him we were tourists from Madrid, he told us that he knew Madrid very well too because he served for the military in 1956 here (which means he is 71 now). He was obviously retired and had lots of free time, so he kept talking and talking and showing us the whole park until we could not find an open restaurant anymore u_u. He was quite an eccentric man - he was born and raised in a rich family who did not experience post-war famines, but, as a pensionist, he told us he renounced to still have a car and a TV. Now he spends his time visiting Parc Güell, warning tourists about possible pickpockets, and, apparently, avoiding the fact that young, hungry Madrid visitors can have lunch
Montjuïc is massive, I agree. It has the Olympic Stadium -now RCD Espanyol's stadium-, that huge castle we did not enter, a couple of big fountains and the Palau Sant Jordi, the enormous basketball arena where Iron Maiden played.

I must say I was very disappointed with La Rambla though. I expected it to be broader and longer... anyway, there was a nice bar in the surroundings, "El Bosc de les Fades" ("The Fairies' Forest"), decorated with trees and varied flora inside, as if it were a true forest. It is not a Rock/Metal bar but rather an Indie Rock one.

In any case, I am pleased that you enjoyed your visit (you are right, Aylee_Bodom, we really look like tourist guides )

@K7: For sure, Greece, current European gold medalists, is the team to beat in this Eurobasket with their great players Schortsanitis, Papaloykas, Papadopoulos... by the way, have you noticed that most of Greece's players are in teams you hate? (Panathinaikos, CSKA Moscow & Dynamo, Real Madrid!)... but I still have faith on the (hopefully unbeatable) 2006 World Champions!

What about you, Aylee_Bodom?

Well personally I date my friends at 23:30, since my personal funds normally add up to 50 Euro cents and I can't afford to have dinner out unless my parents give me some money Then we go to some square where we spend around 2-3 hours talking and drinking (I don't drink ¬¬). After that we go to a pub and listen to some rock/metal until 4 or 5.

As you said many people prefer to stay up all night and go back home around 7-8 in the morning, but I'm not one of those either, at least not for now.

Man I remember when I used to live in Abrantes and Delicias when I would visit my grandparents in the summer. It seems like the people in Pan Bendito are taking over Abrantes, mainly the Buger King and Telepizza lol.

You are absolutely right. I stopped watching the game after 10 minutes. I heard the end of the match on the radio, and hosts (who didn't even celebrate both goals) said that Spain was going nowhere if they kept playing like that. The worst thing is that the coach, Luis Aragonés, refused to contact the media afterwards and the few players who did (Fábregas, Casillas, Albelda) showed an unjustifiable arrogance (blaming journalists for their own failure) and optimism at the same time. It was ICELAND and LATVIA for hell's sake. I am very afraid of what will come out of our next match, against Denmark...
