If I am correct, you're talking about The Glorious Burden and on right? If so, IMO the guy sounds too much like Bruce Dickinson [get off my ass].

As for Iced Earth...I believe 'The Phantom Opera Ghost' is one of the finest examples of musicianship I've ever heard! They used like 3 different guitars EACH in that song alone...and the drums are amazing. A true epic of a song.

I don't think you 're right by saying that Owens sounds too much like BD. Dickinson is far greater than Owens. And has deeper voice than Owens. Can't find the similarity...:noidea: I don' t know what you think, but you must accept that Dickinson is one of the 3 best metal voices. Pespect!

Really good news that Bred Smedley is back! But the greatest news would be if MATT BARLOW came back!!! This would be a reincarnation for Iced Earth!!!

Fucking terrorists ruined Iced Earth. It appears that John is off the patriotic bandwagon, now we just need to wait for Barlow. Maybe he will realize that rocking out across the world is a little cooler than busting kids for drinking beer.

I finally received Burnt Offerings the other day and I"m glad I didn't give up on this band because this cd is pretty good. I originally got Horror Show and didn't like it, but I've warmed up to it. I think I'll pick up more of their albums sometime in the future.

If you like ballad-type songs, you should try 'The Dark Saga'-it's very emotional and quite moody.

However, their other discs are even better. Try 'Alive in Athens' (Get the 3 Disc, everything else is bullshit) to get a good cross-section of their material up to and including 'Something Wicked This Way Comes'.

As someone wisely said... Tim Owens fucks every band he gets into... (Ex: Judas Priest) =). Really he's not bad at all... but he just doesn't fit in the bands he joins he should make a solo career or smthing ^^

Beyond Fear

I haven't heard any of his stuff, myself, but I have been told by Iced Earth/Priest fans that it is good.

The problem with Ripper in IE and Priest, I feel, is not that he fucks it up (his vocals do grate slightly, though), but is that the roles he has had to fill are simply beyond all but the best vocalist's capacity. Following both Rob 'The-coolest-gay-man-in-history' Halford and Matt 'the-coolest-ginger-in-metal' Barlow was never going to be easy, and Ripper has...a very Marmite approach to singing...you love it or you hate it. Still, he does great on Gettysburg, so maybe the problem was a dip in songwriting rather than vocals...I'm not sure how much he wrote for Priest, but his presence alone doesn't account for the dip in quality from Painkiller to Jugulator/Demolition (which are highly underrated...but that's another story).

Iced Earth's "ballads" are the best. As The Alchemist, my fav is "I died for you".

@ The Alchemist: I recommend you "Alive in Athens" too. Fucking masterpiece.

A Question of Heaven does it for me. It's one of the more emotional of IE's ballads (and for emotional, read 'not 'When the Eagle Cries'')

Look, I was a big fan of Matthew Barlow as well but he made the choice to quit Iced Earth and join a police force. So, Iced Earth needed a replacer, someone who has the capibilities for high screams and Tim Owens was a good choice. Also I do miss Matthew Barlow (his voice was "warmer") but without Tim there wouldn't be Iced Earth anymore. The only other possible replacer was the singer of CRESENT, his voice sounds like Matthew Barlow's voice.

About Tim Owens fucking up his bands; Ever heard Winters Bane? Heard Beyond Fear? Both albums are good, Winters bane is even a master^piece!

He did an awesome job with Judas Priest, IMO "Jugulator" was the best Priest album, although it's not typical Priest (they should have released it under another bandname). The last Iced Earth album was for sure a good album, but some songs were too cheesy for me. I prefer the old Iced Earth like "Night of the stormrider" and "Burnt offerings", both are US POWER METAL MASTERPIECES!

Ye I know they needed a replacement but for sure Tim Owens is not the man dude, Matt is almost a gothic vocalist with high pitched moments so u need a dynamic vocalist... ye the cresent vocalist could be a very good choice!! HE rocks!! , Tim Owens it's just all about high pitched, I must clearify I didn't mean he did a bad performance in Judas Priest I just said (or wanted to say) I don't like the works with him in it... but the old stuff performances with Tim Owens were pretty cool.

I'll check that albums out =).

And about the last album ye it's cheesy indeed, but as u said a good album^^ I really like songs like "The reckoning" awesome^^. But I don't reckon that are power metal albums... Iced Earth it's for sure NOT a power metal band... IMO they are somewhat like dark heavy metal (it's a very good term used by metalstorm) or thrash metal, anyway their own explanation it's pretty correct:"heavy metal band that combines influences from thrash metal, power metal, NWOBHM with gothic touches" I couldn't say it better

@ dam3k: I didn't say Iced Eart was power metal, I said they were US power metal. US power metal is a different genre which is based on
-old porgressive metal (old Fates Warning, old Queensryche,...)
-(Bay Area) US thrash (like Forbidden, Agent Steel,...)
-Traditional metal and NWOBHM like Judas Priest, Iron Maiden,....

I'm talking about bands like Helstar, Jag Panzer, Vicious Rumors, Ravensthorne, Deadly Blessing,.... which are far different from bands like Helloween, Stratovarius, Sonata Arctica and the other EUROPEAN power metal bands, you see

The last Iced Earth album is more traditional metal, not typical US power metal but if you listen to "Burnt offerings" and "Night of the stormrider" you'll listen to pure US power metal.

If you can read French, check this site were they also make the difference

Well, US power metal is not as brutal as thrash metal. It's more melodic, more progressive. Try for example Helstar (www.myspace.com/helstar) or Deadly Blessing (http://www.myspace.com/aneyetothepast). Both are good examples... If you listen to the old Iced Earth you'll hear similar things.

If you want to learn more about this kind of metal, try the topic about US metal

Completely agree with that. One of several reasons that IE became a legendary band is Barlow's engaging, dynamic, and unique voice. He didn't just scream/sing high like all the other guys out there. He was DIFFERENT and he was good at it. Tim may be good at what he does but it's just the same as everyone else. Bad choice for a replacement IMO.

(And I agree that IE is well classified simply as "US Power Metal" but if you want to get nitty-gritty and specific then they're just a hyrid of power, heavy, thrash and a bit of prog. That's way too complicated tho )

US power metal combines parts of prog, speed and thrash metal with a traditional heavy metal base. Prominent bands: Helstar, Jag Panzer, Metal Church, Liege Lord, Vicious Rumors, etc.
Old Iced Earth is the same category: US power/thrash (up to Burnt Offerings)

Completely agree with that. One of several reasons that IE became a legendary band is Barlow's engaging, dynamic, and unique voice. He didn't just scream/sing high like all the other guys out there. He was DIFFERENT and he was good at it. Tim may be good at what he does but it's just the same as everyone else. Bad choice for a replacement IMO.

(And I agree that IE is well classified simply as "US Power Metal" but if you want to get nitty-gritty and specific then they're just a hyrid of power, heavy, thrash and a bit of prog. That's way too complicated tho )

It's always cool find people who share my opinion but one thing.. US power metal? c'mon, first what's the difference btw power metal and us power metal... :S? and second does a double bass drum make a band power metal ?

US power metal combines parts of prog, speed and thrash metal with a traditional heavy metal base. Prominent bands: Helstar, Jag Panzer, Metal Church, Liege Lord, Vicious Rumors, etc.
Old Iced Earth is the same category: US power/thrash (up to Burnt Offerings)

I'm anti pointless-tags anyway I'll check that bands out and try to analize and see if they are that different from the "main styles", in order to don't need to use another tag... =)

with all respect but isn't there a change older guys can be right for just once? Believe me: US power metal is a different style from power metal as you guys know it; Sonata Arctica, Stratovarius, Helloween, etc.... Both genres have a different history and sound different and both are official metal genres. LISTEN TO IT !!!!!!!!!!!

Could u plz give an explanation?why sound different? differences, points etc of us power metal thx

Compare Helstar - Nosferatu and Stratovarius - Fright Night, both from 1989. You'll see. No need of further descriptions. US power metal has other roots than the European (melodic) one and is even by today's standards very different. (I mean some genres transcend into each other, you can find very rarely bandst to play purely x or y genre, and mark, US power metal is a combination already).
If you cannot find Helstar, PM me, and I'll send you an album. Or any band I mentioned above.
