Generic European Power Metal - Good Or Bad?

It's predictable, yes, and the lyrics, song-titles, and often even band names are horrendously cringe-worthy, but for me, nothing can brighten my mood and self-esteem better than some awesome tales of dragon slaying, princess rescuing, smiting with steel, and broken love, told in such a melodic and catchy manner.
Some bands in this area of Power Metal are Freedom Call, Magic Kingdom, Fairyland, Hammerfall, Lost Horizon, Power Quest, even Rhapsody Of Fire and Kamelot to an extent... If those names mean anything to you, then you'll know exactly what I'm talking about! Powerscreams, catchy choruses, awesome melodies and a general feeling of invincibility and awesomeness, without feeling truly metal like Manowar. I'm a fan, but clearly it's not all I listen to. It's good in doses, to brighten the day, and to put a smile on my face, but if this was it, well, Metal would be pretty boring. Still, may this genre live forever!

I'm a big fan of power metal. However, I also hate it. This paradox has an explanation, though:
At its best, power metal can be amazing. Some of my favorite bands play power metal: Kamelot, Blind Guardian, even Gamma Ray and Nightwish to an extent. However, the leap from average power metal to great power metal is huge: there is a huge number of mediocre power metal bands that are just plain horrible. When you make this kind of music, you have to get it just right or it turns out ridicilous and embarassing. Power metal also requires a certain mood to be listenable, but bad power is still horrible.

It sucks, Flower Metal is for wimps.  Only Flower Metal I've listened to is Wizard and that is already about half a year ago.

Oh well it is definitely not the only Power Metal I've heard. As a matter of fact, it was one of the first metal genres I got into. I meant to put in "Only Flower Metal I've listened to lately is.." And K7, I think it was the German one. Never heard the Finnish one.

Yes, much of it does sound sissy-ish, but that's just the typical stereotype that many of the bands conform to. Bands like Freedom Call, Rhapsody Dreamtale and Stratovarius are just musically great  . Okay Rhapsody [Of Fire] get cheesy most of the time, but the imagination and the musicianship makes them so unique and gifted. Also Power Metal is something that's meant to put one in a good and optimistic mood, which is why the bands sing about the things that they do.Oh and the German band, Wizard.......ummm I wouldn't consider them Pure Power Metal or 'Flower Metal' .........They don't even have a keyboard player  .

the fact that "GENERIC" euro-power metal is winning handily speaks volumes about peoples' tastes. "Generic" anything should never be considered "good." the helloweens and blind guardians of hte world play good power metal (i like them and i basically hate the genre overall), but the next notch down don't do a thing for me. terrible and uninspired.

I agree with most of the statements here. Power metal bands are amazing, but I've heard way too many generic ones that start to get on your nerves when you listen to them enough. I think there needs to be a distinction between generic power metal and normal power metal. I don't see how a band like Kamelot and Lost Horizon can be considered as generic. If we're going to call anything that's happy sounding, has clean vocals and double bass drumming as generic power metal then I can say all death metal is generic as well, or any musical genre or sub-genre. There's definitely a distinction between a generic band and a non-generic one... not sure how to explain it, but you definitely know it when you hear it

For me I dont see the point, 75% of it sounds the same to me, every once in a while a band will pop out for me, but then again, im not a big power metal guy in the first place anyways.

So many metallers are only interested in music that allows them to feel well endowed and manly. Get over yourselves. I listen to a fuck load of power metal...Helloween, Stratovarius, Blind Guardian, Terasbetoni, Dream Evil, (some) Sonata Arctica, Rhapsody of Fire, Luca Turilli, Kamelot, Gamma Ray, Falconer, Edguy, Avantasia and Dark Moor for example. And I love it. I don't consider myself a "wimpy" metaller. I also listen to symphonic metal, industrial metal, black metal, death metal, gothic metal, heavy metal, prog metal, folk metal, funk metal...etc On top of all that, I listen to a fair amount of non-metal...techno, hard dance, industrial, EBM, dark electro, Alternative rock, blues, prog rock, DnB, I consider myself quite open minded...it;s not about being wimpy.

While I mainly listen to what is generally considered "good" power metal (blind guardian, kamelot, nightwish, iced earth, etc...), generic power metal is my only real guilty pleasure. I know I shouldn't like it, but I do  You may not like it. You may call it things like "flower metal." You may say its cheesy or sissy.I don't give a shit. I love it.

There are a lot of good power metal band's...Yet, i stoped to listen it for half of a year i think. Only power metal i listen now is Rhapsody (great when i play Guild Wars ) and ElvenKing (if that counts in power metal )... And yea, i got to be in right mood to listen it, example xepi .
