Devin Townsend the Canadian metal genius probably best known for his heavier band Strapping Young Lad also has a great progressive band known as the Devin Townsend Band. Devin Townsend started off his musical career singing on the Steve Vai record Sex and Religion then his band Strapping Young Lad got signed. Devin Townsend is a "melodic" alternative to Strapping Young Lad what are your opinions about him I believe he is great.

Devin Townsend: I think just being honest with yourself. You have to be really clear in your own mind about what your motivation for having a hairstyle that smells bad, hurts and looks retarded when you're going to the bank to get a loan to get more ProTools gear.
[Laughter]

I looked like Krusty the Klown and saying "I need to take out a $40,000 loan to get this stupid HD rig". It's just like "yeah, okay". Every morning I woke up, my pillow was translucent. I had this disgusting shit hanging off my head. After awhile I didn't even like the way I look. I hate the way I smell. It hurts. So why do I keep it? And I'm like, "because it is my identity". People think of you as crazy Dev with that hair. I was doing it for everybody else. I grew it out because I was going bald and I was unwilling to let it go. So I was like "fuck you, I'm bald. Here you go." I'm 37 now, and I'm like "you know what dude? You're bald." I kept it in a box somewhere.

I'm listening to it right now, and I have been listening to it the whole week, a really enjoyable album, in my humble opinion is one of the best albums Devin has ever made.

I think it's a great album ! I have been listening for the last weeks and it just flows so easily, for moments the are some pink floyd's sounding as well wich remember me of Jon Oliva's project some how, but this album go by its own, it's quiet yet direct , it have its heavy moments

there is this intriging thing, the quiet riot song wich goes
"And I don't know why...
And I don't care why anymore"
which remembers me of the song we're not gonna take it from Quiet Riot, Wonder if it could be a relation with it... it's just a word thou... and also the song Lady Helen, the part that goes "it's true..." remembers me of some song wich i cant recall...

Also I'm wondering what does the voices say on the Zi song at the end on the crescendo part i hear a "everybody knows" but that's about it anyone with better listening than me ?

Just took this from the DT myspace:

August 17, 2009

"Hey folks, Dev here with the update for the second instalment of the DTP (Devin Townsend Project).

We are just readying the release of album 2, Addicted so here's a few brief words:

With Ki, I kind of strode out in uncharted territories for myself musically, and loved the experience. But during the course of writing this 4 record project, it was inevitable that I would end up writing a selection of tunes that were very much in line with my back catalogue. This group of songs is the second record in the series, and it is called ADDICTED.

Musically, Addicted is along the lines of the big, wall of sound hard rock / heavy metal of Ocean Machine and Accelerated Evolution (even Physicist at points). It is a very direct and 'to the point' album with an emphasis on groove and the chorus. In the past, lots of my records end up taking a kind of Pink Floyd-ish route (between song meandering etc.) ? Addicted is really simple: 11 rocking songs and no bullshit.

I wanted to make a record that was heavy, without being dark or depressing. When I got into metal it was for the energy behind it, but somewhere along the way that energy started getting really negative. In music right now, there's a ton of heavy bands that are really depressing to listen to loudly. I wanted to make a record without any real deep metaphor on the surface. Something that sounds good, has a good beat, and a positive feeling. It is still heavy as-all-get-out, but I think there's a differentiation to be made between being 'peaceful', and being peaceful but wanting to celebrate loud, crushing music.

The vocal duties on this record are handled by myself and Anneke van Giersbergen. (I wanted to have male and female vocals kind of 'tell the story' so to speak). It's an honour to work with her and she has a lovely, lovely energy. The other musicians on this record are Ryan Van Poederooyen on drums, Brian Waddell on bass, and Mark Cimino on guitars.

I love this record, it affects me in a way that I wasn't prepared for. It's a fully rocking album of optimism. If you just want to 'play it loud' without any crazy metaphor, this album might be for you!

On other notes:

I have been rehearsing with a new band, and we will start touring in early 2010, representing all the back catalogue of solo material, from Ki, Addicted, Physicist, Ziltoid, Terria, Ocean Machine, dtb, Infinity etc? I have some big plans for this and rehearsals are sounding amazing. The touring entity will be called 'Devin Townsend' and is essentially a way for me to get out there and interact again and showcase 15 years of music that never really got it's fair shake. We look forward to seeing you out there!

I will start the work on the fourth record Deconstruction in Los Angeles in October, some great plans for that? (and btw, THAT is a heavy record with a lot of metaphor?) news on that as it comes!

So I hope you will enjoy Addicted, in the theme of the dtp, the reason Addicted exists is maybe a little deeper than what the record sounds like up front. But up front, it kind of states: 'Life is tough, the world can be an ugly place?so lets forget about the dramas and ROCK - here's some heavy guitars, big choruses and killer beats' "

Devin.

I've been listening to Devin lately. I'm still discovering his discography, still in the early albums. I like it so far, it's sort of introspective the way I usually go for.

Devin really kind of lost me after "Accelerated Evolution".
"Ziltoid..." was quite imaginative and fun in a way - but (although I've not given his latest stuff much of a chance) the latest stuff sounds more ambient, pretentious and boring. Not my kind of thing.

Definitely looking forward to seeing him at Bloodstock 2010 though. Obviously I'll be looking forward to the older Devin stuff. Maybe he'll play a SYL song or two too.

Explain what you mean by pretentious.

Making music slow and ambient, etc. seemingly just for the sake of it. Fine, he's free to make what he wants, but it just isn't to my tastes.

You might try giving the 3rd album in this series of four he is popping out a listen when it drops sometime early next year. I think it's supposed to be a little more metal and feature a bunch of different death metal vocalists.

I keep on seeing this name every where, and come to find out it's the fellow from SYL. I see what's wrong here though, Devin is Canadian..it's explains everything! I don't mean to shit on your guys parade but, Devin should have stuck with Strapping Young Lad, this solo work is really, really bad...Canadian musicians, they generally suck.

it's a hit and miss affair for me. Overall, SYL is more consistent, though the best stuff can be found in his solo albums.

Strapping Young Lad for me is really hit and miss...I was going to be in a Strapping Young Lad tribute band called Detox on keys and I just couldn't do it...the keys were background and were conjured up from programming devices and I would've felt kinda useless and not using my full keyboard/synth potential...

Deconstruction is turning into something much bigger. I keep reading updates and he is bringing in guest musicians like Ihsahn, Mikael Akerfeldt, Floor Jansen, and many more. He's even mentioned that this album is more special than expected. It was just a heavy album meant to appease the fans that were demanding more heavy stuff.... but I think he is really enjoying himself with this release.
