Akercocke

Jason Mendonca was recently interviewed by Andrew Haug of Triple J's "Full Metal Racket" (based in Australia). You can download the eight-minute interview in MP3 format at this location.

I'm currently enjoying my copy of 'Words...' that I purchased earlier in the semester and hadn't listened to in a while. I'm sure it's been said before, but the approach the band takes to Death Metal is really very refreshing, especially with the plethora of unoriginal acts these days. The mix of brutality and ethereal passages really makes the album a unique experience. I bet these guys would be amazing to experience live, and hopefully one day I'll have the pleasure of doing just that.

You right about their mix of ethereal and brutal passages - the song "Shelter From The Sand" takes my mind where few death metal bands would even dare acknowledge exist, let alone be able to pull it off so epically. And yes, I am with you - I'd love to see these guys live, particularly with the attire they adorn...!

oh yeh im not missing that i definately gonna get my tickets.

well i love akercocke i downloaded the discography and spent all night listening to every album - pretty damn awesome!

I just really started listening to this band today and I must say they are impressive. They have a great combination of heavy black/death with softer, melodic pieces inbetween. Definitely worth checking out.

Yeah, agree with the guy above me. btw are their other albums except The Antichrist and WTGU, DTGU that is worth of a listen?

I would say everything EXCEPT the debut. In this case you better download the songs and then decide if it's worth it to have that real deal. The debut is too raw and monotonous at times. But it's not bad on it's own.

I think it depends on what you're looking for really. I think Choronzon is amazing but it's more black metal than their latter works. Words... seems to be their transition album, I guess, but its killer and my favourite depending on my mood. I've yet to buy Goat of Mendes but it's on my wishlist.

I'm really impressed by this band. I'm starting to listen to their albums. They are interesting to say the least.

I find ALL of Mithras vastly inferior to Akercocke. Probably also has to do with the fact that Mithras is a blatant Nocturnus/Morbid Angel mix rip-off whereas Akercocke is way more original.

Blah blah, everyone says that, I think Mithras are doing something fairly all their own and besides, it's not like Morbid Angel have given us anything decent in a long time. Also, using that argument, Akercocke could be considered as Suffocation wannabe's.

Haha, well it is all to do with taste really. I prefer Mithras over Akercocke, but that's probably just because I prefer brutal death over progressive death. Akercocke are much more original, but Mithras are much harder - and that's just what I go for.

Well, I've heard some people call Akercocke the Opeth of Black Metal. To be honest, I prefer Akercocke to Opeth any day. Im having trouble choosing my favorite album now...Antichrist, Choronzon, and WTgU are all such good albums.

Any idea when these guys will release a new album?

Heh, can't believe I suggested that Forever Advancing Legions would stomp Akercocke. A great album but not Words... or Choronzon great.

I need to get myself some from these guys only heard Words That Unspoken... and it really enjoy it, Seduced would be my favorite song. Saw them live once too but it was when i had never heard much of them but they were, very impressive from what i remember.

Well Matt Wilcock left the band back in March or so but I can't see it being much of a problem, Akercocke was always Jason and David's band and they were just as good before Matt joined so as long as those two are still on good terms and invested in the band things should be fine. I'm not even sure how much creative input Wilcock had in the band, I'm pretty sure he didn't have any on The Words... he just joined around the same time I think.

Unless something else is going on I've not heard about.

One of the very few BM bands I can listen to. Songs like The Dark Inside and My Apterous Angel are awesome.

More like blackened death metal than plain BM, but okay. Not to mention, Antichrist is pretty much progressive death, so...

I know they're not typical BM band, there's a lot of avantgarde and death elements to it.
