This is a question that has been asked quite a lot of times. You can't go wrong with Blackwater Park or Still Life (or My Arms Your Hearse for that matter), the utter greatness of these compositions have blown the minds of ample a metal fanatic. However, their newer albums, Ghost Reveries and Watershed, are very interesting as well, albeit perchance a trifle less suited to starting the discovery of their discography. So I would suggest either one of the first mentioned trio of albums .

I agree with Philaenas, Still Life is my favorite - spanish style accoustic solos, fretless jazzy bass....man what I great album.

Jejeje... I agree, I remember when I was listening to that album when I was in my room and my mom come to my room to say that we would eat soon and then she look at the radio and says:

"It's that a latin cd? O.O"
"Nah... It's Opeth, a metal band"
"It's nice..."

Sadly, she doesn't like metal at all.

I like opeth, I think it's good prog death, but what I don't understand is why everybody juts flips out when they hear Opeth. I mean, most songs are barely even metal, a lot of the songs that are less than 10 minutes are just completely soft and acoustic, and on top of that a 1/4 of the time they just seem bland.

They just flip because the songwriting ability is so mind-blowing. That alone is amazing,

I think the musicianship is the engaging part. The only thing mindblowing about the songwriting is its inanity and formulaic nature. It's pretty much "let's take these assorted one minute bits of music that we have composed, then randomly combine them into ten minute 'progressive' songs! But make sure to alternate between light parts and heavy parts!"

i agree with thesabbathfan, i think opeth is over rated. i mean i dont mind listening to songs that are 10 minutes long as long as i am entrigued by the music. but these dudes just bore me. theres better metal out there in my opinion

You are right about Opeth half of the time not being metal, and THAT is exactly why they amaze people. Opeth have the capacity to write songs as soft and beautiful as Face of Melinda or anything of Damnation, yet can destroy many other bands with heaviness when they so choose.

That ride you take when listening to them, never quite going where the song is going to go next is what makes Opeth unique and thrilling to millions of people worldwide.

I think they have gone beyond being simply a Death band, Prog Band or even Metal band. Like Faith No More before them they have their own genre populated by them and them alone.

...i just started listening to them a couple of months ago and i find them quite good...until this moment i think blackwater park is an amazing album, love mostly all of the songs...vocals are interesting...they've got really depressing songs too, a found in them a litte bit of everything...like them actually...

Yeah.. that album is really good although I disagree with most of the Opeth's fans when they say it's the best album. Although I do agree it's their most important in an economic way so to speak because people really started to listen to the band after BP.

But.. Damn... I really like BP. But every album before it overshadows BP by a country mile. But that's just me

That's just a personal statement. and not a fact. I know many people who loves or dislikes the band. So I find that it's totally useless to try to put a statement about Opeth because everyone has a different opinion about their music.

...i didn't know that was the most important album talking about merchandise...well i really dont know much about them, which was the 1st album and so on...a friend brought his collection and i imported it to my itunes so i'm not aware of it hehe...

Going to see them on monday, hehe can't wait.

Yeah.. That album is like their Magnum Opus as the critics use to say since the album introduced a whole new range of fans if you compare it to the others vefore it.

Opeth tend to have pretty erratic songwriting. In any given song, it isn't hard to find a section that has no thematic relation to the other sections. For every transition that flows well, they have a section of 2-3 sections that flow illogically. In a lot of their songs you could switch one section with another and it wouldn't change the impact or flow of the song at all because the songs often don't follow any sort of coherent narrative structure, they're largely random.

That's what makes it useful to discuss. An exchange of ideas when peoples' ideas are different can be productive. If everyone had the SAME opinion of Opeth, THEN discussion would be useless.

I agree with you abou exchanging ideas, but what I was trying to say is that a person can't really put a statement and say : "This is true" because there will be always one person that will have a totally different opinion =

I think its their erratic songwriting that makes them so good actually....I love it how unpredictable they can be. With random parts like in "Lotus Eater" that have no apparent reason to be in there, nothing leads up to it and nothing flows from it but its just so fantastic that I dont really care. Their randomness, to my mind, brings about their brilliance.

I gotta agree with Totaliterater, I thought it was just assumed that it comes down to opinion, plus there's such thing as subjective truth.

Went and saw them last night with High On Fire and Baroness. The two opening bands kicked ass. I actually listen to some HOF so I knew what to expect there. But Baroness was also pretty good. A sort of Jammy doom band. But Opeth...they were just fucking amazing. Michael Akerfeldt gave me one of his picks. He was in Mid-solo and just dropped it into my hand while he was standing over me. It was AWSOME.

Yeah I was thinking about taking a greyhound, but then I remembered that guy who got decapitated on the greyhound up here a few months ago, the killer like barricaded himself inside the bus after it stopped, started eating parts of the victim, and waving the head around out the window, the killer came from the city that concert was in, call me nuts but I get hassled by weirdos on the city bus enough as it is, I dont want to come across people like him in case theres something in the water there.

Wow, that is Fuckin' Br00tal. I dunno, sad as that situation is, it makes me chuckle a little.
As far as your fear of the bus goes though, I suppose I understand. Occurences like that happen on very rare occasions though. The chances of YOU getting your head cut off on a bus is pretty slim to none. I ride the city bus to school every day, and I've only ever seen one person who I genuinly thought was crazy. You'd be cool......but I guess I can't tell that to the guy that actually got his head cut off
