I can't help but feel very optimistic about heavy metal's future when bands like Black Succubi keep popping up. Just when you've heard a ton of uninspired newcomers and thought that metal is on a slippery trail of tar and poop, some riff-monster jumps out from behind the veil of crap and shreds your face off. Black Succubi is definitely one of those bands.

I don't know what the residents of Copenhagen eat, but it must be a strong diet of carbon dioxide and enriched uranium, cause these Danes know how to make a heavy metal record. Black Succubi combine massive riffing, eerily similar to Black Label Society, with a strong icy vocal capable of freezing hell over many times. Honestly, the riffs on this mad debut are absolutely delicious and the chorus' are sure to get people singing along to the band. Black Succubi sport the kind of hard rocking, ass kicking, bone crushing sound that only a select few bands manage to pull off. Considering the shock and awe that the few first tracks of the album produce, it'd be natural to assume that things will calm down a bit at some point - and they do, in a way. Or? no wait, here we go again! Is it a bird? is it a plane? No - it's a nuclear bootkick in your face! Black Succubi keeps up a steady pace of riff-madness throughout the album. Oh and by the way, did I mention that Hank Shermann of Mercyful Fate whips out a solo in ?Cry For Your Brother"?

Black Succubi's success can be in part attributed to the massive low-key sound of their debut. I cannot be sure though wether I'd enjoy this release any less if it were in a different tone, cause Black Succubi's songwriting, while somewhat confined as far as variation goes, scores high marks as well. One thing is for sure though - the opening barrage from the Danish guns is devastating. Wicked stuff!
