Progressive Metal / Djent
Feb 06, 2011
With one of the best EPs ever released by any band, TesseracT will be remembered forevermore for helping to define djent as a seperate genre. Or maybe not, its a pretty stupid term actually. Anyway, who cares?

This is forward-thinking, innovative metal of the highest caliber. Beautiful and also frighteningly heavy, Concealing Fate is a great teaser of the band's upcoming LP One. Mandatory for anyone reading this.

An extremely good progressive EP. Probably the best 5 bucks you can spend if you're into tech/math/progressive metal. Production is out of this world. The vocals really set the EP off. Very powerful and fits the heaviness well.

This one did not make it to the awards because other staff don't like it or not enough staff have heard it before the awards?

I assume not enough of us heard it. I don't check into prog at all anymore, so I wouldn't know anything about new releases.

Of course, if you heard it in time to suggest it, you could have posted a brief description of the album in the thread for users to suggest albums for the awards.

obviously I missed out on it until today because of jup's wicked recommendation. I've been here long enough to make my nominations (Grey Waters) (=

Hugely enjoyable but thoroughly overrated EP. Basically ripping off SikTh (right down to Justin Hill's vocal style and those Meshuggah-isms) but doing it in a subdued and accessible way. I prefer SikTh's weird bent on the style and use of cleaner guitar (which gives them far more versatility and I suppose relegates them from the ridiculous "Djent" genre of which SikTh have undoubtedly influenced in someway or another - a nice legacy I suppose) but good stuff anyway.

So what is "djent"? Just another term for math metal or something? I'm confused.

I think it has something to do with the guitar tone and style of play (something to do with palm... muting... or something... I ain't no guitarist). Basically if it sounds like Meshuggah then it's probably Djent coz that's where it began apparently.

The term "Djent" is supposedly the sound which the guitar makes: "djent djent djent"

Is that "dee-ent" or "gent"? Or something else. >>

No clue. It sounds pretty silly to me either way.

Agreed. Anyway, suppose I should let the discussion continue regarding the EP (which I haven't heard and probably won't bother checking out), just thought I'd try to gain some knowledge regarding a "genre" which apparently isn't defined anywhere and I've only heard of on this site. :S

Yeah I've seen the term dotted around but only explored it when I saw Jerry's staff pick. It's a great EP anyway and worth looking into. I'd be more impressed if I hadn't been a SikTh fan for the past 6 or 7 years.

I don't like djent as well since it sounds too palm mute/low pitch and But overall, in djent or prog math world, it's brilliant for its composition and elaborately instrumental performance

It's a good album but not very catchy for me unfortunately. I can see why people went crazy for this EP though.
